THE EVENING STAR. W. D. WALLACH, Editor and Prepricter. ee WASHINGTON OITY: FRIDAY..2,00+.---sceeeeMABCH 31, 1865. eee eee Senet SS S@ READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. BEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- | GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER, EXTRA. =| STIRRING NEWS FROM THE FRONT? | GRANT’S NEW MOVEMENT IN SUC- CESSFUL PROGRESS: zea caicas A REBEL ATTACK BRILLIANTLY RE- PULSED! | cet areas THE ENEMY DRIVEN NEARLY A MILE W1TH HEAVY LOSS! periicmas= sie REBEL PRISONERS CAPTURED! pa EES SHERIDAN HEARD FROM! esa es Correspondence from the advance of the Army of the Potomac, Hatcher's Run, dated | ‘Thursday morning, showed the locality of our army under Grant at that time to bein a line parallel with and east of the Boydton Piank Road and west of Hatcher's Run. | Grant had thus planted himself within five miles of the Southside Road, and though the Febels would doubtless endeavor to resist his Occupation of that vital link to their Rich- mond connections, such resistance must be futile. | ‘These important positions had been gained ‘with but little resistance by the enemy. | The Fifth Corps had a sharp encounter with the enemy on the “(.uaker Road,’ on Wed- mesday, but lost in the affair less than three | hundred men, and drove the rebels nearly a Mile with serious loss to them, (the rebels), and captured from them quite a number of prisoners. While Grant is making this formidable ad- vance movement all our old positions before Petersburg and at City Point and on the north | side of the James are adequately held, and are so strongly fortified as to be able to resist any | attack, should Lee be desperate enough to make the attempt. Richmond papers of Wednesday report that Sheridan passed through Dinwiddie Court House on Wednesday morning, and they think dis destination is the South Side Road. The Richmond papers say that nothing has been heard trom Johnstor since the battle of Averysboro. The negro canal boatman whose boat was smashed up by-Sheridan on his late raid, and ‘whe was so lionized by the Richmond papers | a3 having joined the rebel colored recruits in @ ferver of indignation against the Yankees, bes deserted te our lixes, and brings with him > twenty new rebel uniforms! ——————— ITaLtan OGPERA.—Another large house at Ford’s last night, the attraction being Sonnam- bala, with Kellogg as Amina. She is perhaps the best Amina (acted and | sung) Washington has ever known; and in | the last scene she fairly brought down the house, or rather brought it up standing, in Gemonstrative enthusiasm. ‘Lo-night, Poliuto, with a leading cast, and to-morrow night, Don Sebastian closes the | season. | | | | es UA good thing is attributed to Hugh Mc- Cullongh, the new Secretary of the ereaeare: A frightened speculator was asking him to ar- | rest the downward tendency of gold. «Weil, | my good friend,” was the Secretary’s reply, “if you can get Grant, Sherman, and Sheridan to let the rebels whip them, you will be grati- fied, but I am afraid they won't oblige you.” ee a, 7A bill allowing the Western Maryland Railroad Company, the privilege tae an LGiearan riiw tia onmaraet. GRIFFIN ATTACKED, AND THE ENEMY REPULSED. eS THE REBELS DECEIVED BY OUR MOVEMENT». alee Information received from the Army of the Potomac to the evening of Wednesday is to the following effect : The route taken by @ portion of the army is the same over which it has traveled several times heretofore, namely: the Vaughn and Haiifax roads, running southwest across Hatcher's Run. The column started at three on the morning of the 2sth inst. A large cavalry force, under Sheridan, took the Halifax road toward Dinwiddie Gourt- House. The infantry column crossed Hatcher’s Run, on the Vaughn road, but met with no opposi- tion until they reached within a short distance of the Boydtom plank road, where the enemy's pickets were found and driven back. " Griffin’s division was sent up the Quaker road. and about three in the afternoon a divi- sion of the enemy made its appearance, and | | not knowing the strength of our force, formed dated with BOARD at 399 18th Gea tee F} be m’3 in line and charged, but the rebels were re- pulsed with very heavy loss. A number of prisoners were taken 4nd brought in. They said the move had been a complete surprise to them, as they had expected an attack in the vicinity of Fort Steadman, and that their troops had been massed there to meet it. It is believed the rebels were hurrying men towards the Southside railroad all the after- noon, in the hope of being able to prevent its destruction; but great confidence was felt that Sheridan would be a little ahead, and that by the nextnight we would have news of its de- struction at some point near Burkesyille. If this should be accomplished, it is claimed the evacuation of Petersburg and Richmond will quickly follow. Information from City Point, dated Thurs- day, 2 a. M.,saysa very heavy cannonading commenced at half-past ten o'clock, and was very furious till half-past one, in the direc- tion of the Petersburg front, but no particu- lars were known at City Point when the mail boat left there yesterday morning. ATTEMPTS OF THE REBELS TO BREAK THROUGH OUR LINES NEAR FORT STEADMAN. ee REBEL ATTAOKS BRILLIANTLY RE- PULSED. ee A TERRIFIC ARTILLERY THROUGH THE NIGHT. a The mail beat Dictator, Capt. Charles Deer- ing, arrived here this merning from City Point, but brings no further details of the advance movement of the Army of the Potomac that would be proper for publication. It was reported at City Point yesterday morning that the rebels having become ap- prised of Grant’s movement, and believing that he had weakened his lines in front of Petersburg, made three unsuccesstul attempts Wednesday night to break through the lines of the 9th corps in the vicinity of Fort Stead- man. Our troops, anticipating something ef the kind, were in readiness to receive the revels, And as soon as the first demonstration was made by the enemy, which wasabont 9 o’clock p. m., our forts and artillery opened upon them asharp fire, which drove them back in con- fasion. The rebels repeated the attempt with the same ill-success, each time being hurled back to their own lines, finally abandoning the con- test about 2 o’clock in the morning. ‘The rebel loss had not been ascertained when the Dictator took her departure, but it must have been considerable, as the firing upon our side was terrific, the flashes of the cannon lighting up the heavens for miles around, and being plainly visible from the decks ef the steamers lying in the stream at City Point. Oar own loss in killed and wounded (we fight- ing under cover) is reported to be trifling, less than half @ dozen in all The provost brigade was ealled ont by the beating of the long roll, and remained in the intrenchments surrounding Oity Point unti yesterday morning, when they came into quar- ters, at which time all was quiet. On Wednesday President Lincoln rode ont to the front again, with a number of distin- guished officers, and {t was expected that he would return to Washington to-day. The Dictator brought up twenty-five rebel deserters, who have been sent to Col. Ingraha: to be disposed of. = General Parke, of the 9th corps, has resumed command of ail the troops in front of Peters. burg, at City Point, and on the north side of the James. ——————__—______ A OANARD. A gold speculating canard has been put atioat in New York to-day to the effect that Lee broke through our lines on Wednesday night near Fort Steadman, and was playing the mischief generally. There is no truth whatever inthe story. On the eontrary, the teeble demonstrations of the rebelson Wednes- day night were repulsed with the greatest ease. FIRE REBBL DESERTIONS During the month of Mareh 2,360 deserters trom Lee’s army were received in this city, to all of whom the oath of allegiance was admin- istered by Capt. Russell, of Col. Ingraham’s staff. This is a considerable increase over the month ot February, when there were but 1,239 received. THE OLD CAPITOL AND CARROLL PRISONS. At the present time there are 17 prisoners in the Old Capitol prison, and 109 in Carrol prison, making & totalof 126.
