Some very interesting facts in connection ‘with the subject of marriages of consanguinity Dave just been put on record by & French sta- tusticiam. He carried on his investigations in the town of Batz, in the French departmentof the Loire Inferieure. Having selected forty-six eases of consanguineous marriages, he ex- amined the husbands, wives and children, both in regard to their physical and intellectual de- velopment, and made inquiries concerning the families examined, and their ancestors, through the mayor, pastor, and oldest inhabitants. Combining the statistics thus collected, he has found that intermarriages do not bring about disease, idiotcy, or malformation. However, itis important tomark that these results are attributed by the writer to the favorable cli- mate of the locality, and tothe general hab its hygiene, and morality of the inhabitants , as ‘Wellas to the absence of alljhereditary dis- ease. The town of Batz is situated upon a peninsula bounded on one side by the rocks of the sea-shore, and on the other by salt marshes. The air is pure, and the most frequent winds are from the north, northeast, and northwest. The number of inhabitants is abont 3,300. They have little communication with other parts of the country, and their occupation is almost confined to the preparation of salt. They are very intelligent, almostall the adults betng able to read. The morality is of high stamp, prostitution being unknown. Theft and murder have not occurred within the recollec- tion of the oldest inhabitant. Mothers nurse their children till there are fifteen months old, and the general food of the population is of the vegetable class. They are, at present, in Batz forty-six consanguineous pairs of first cou- sins, five unions between second cousins, thir- ty-one marriages of third cousins, and ten ot cousins inthe fourth degree. From the five unions of second cousins there has been twenty- three children, none of whom have presented apy congenital detormity. Thirty-one mar- riages of third cousins have produced one hun- dred and twenty children, all healthy; and the marriages of fourth cousins have ziven rise to twenty-nine children, all of whom, with the exception of those who died cf ague, were strong and healthy atthe period of examina- tion. The writer contends that such facts as the foregoing prove that consangnineous mar- Pep by no means lead to the degeneration of 7A young gentleman Iiately entered the shop of aconfectioner in a Scottish town, and standing at the counter with considerablejgusto discussed a pretty large tart. He tendered to the good weman in charge a shilling to pay for his repast, which she had to take to a neighboring shop to obtain change. Leftalone, our friend had found his appetite return, and he proceeded to help himself to some neatly twisted, altogether very enticing looking ginger snaps which lay close by. He had demolished these, each being only a bite, when the shop mistress returned. Thegentleman pointed to the remaining snaps by way of inquiring what ‘Was the damage, and was rather surprised by the exclamation, ‘God save us! ye haena eaten oma o’ the snaps!” «Just twal o’ them,” said the ‘youth; ‘what for no!” «What for no!’ «Because they are medicine for bairns; ilka yin’s adose for a wean—it has two grains o‘julep and & grain o'calemel in’t; ye’ve get phereck for yinch, I’m thinkin” It was enongh. Hew munch he paid, or whether he paid at all, or how he spent the afternoon, has not been heard; but the next day he was seen wandering perturbedly through the streets pale and sorrowful. &7 An elopement of a painfully sensational charaeter has taken place in London in high life The brother of a noble marquis, bordering upon three score years, himeeif the father of a numereus family, is one of the parties; and the lady, who is nearly related to him by marriage, is the wife of a noble lord, but one degree re- moved from the heirship of the oldest and wealthiest marquisates inthe kingdom. The offending fair one, who has not yet reached her 30th year, leaves behind her several interesting children, but she has taken with her the title deeds to an attractive feature in the shapeof recently acquired property of the value of nearly £100,000. D7 The city authorities of Philadelphia are haying bird boxes placed in the publie parks and routing out the squirrels. The squirrels were an interesting object in the parks, and if theyceuld have been satisfied with enjoying ahome at the public expense, without inter- fering with their neighbors, they might have vontinued to have the free rangé of the parks. But they could notenjoy these privileges with- ont mischief, and committed somany depre- dations upon the birds nests and the eggs, that the birds—sensible creatures—would nolonger stay inthe company of such aggressive and troublesome neighbors. 7 Prentice, of the Louisville Journal, says: We heard at Richmond a good story on Bob Johnson, formerly United States Senator from Arkansas, atthe battle of Sniloh. In the heat of the fight, Bob, exhausted by toil, sat down with some comrades fora few minutes tore- eruit himself, placing his canteen of brandy between his thighs. Soon he felt a shock, and heard the “thud” of a bullet, and looking down saw a colored fiuid gushing in a copious stresm. Bob is brave, but Bob cried aloud in @ voice of despair, “Oh God! my friends, I am ebot through the bladder!” How To Start A BaLky Horse.—A friend sends the following suggestions to start a balky horse. Asthé@re are a number of balky horses in this city, we may give the suggestions pub- Jicity and hope they may prove valuable: «Fill Bis mouth with dirt or gravel from the road and he'll go. Now don’t laugh at this, buttry it. The philosophy of the thing is—it gives him something else to think of. We have seen be tried @ hundred times, and it has never tailed. Mra. EwR_. tT Sours.—Mrs. Ewell arrived at St. Louis a rte eee see about the sumof # 100,000 belonging to her, which was lately seized by the United States authorities. Soon after her arrival a dispatch ‘was received from Gen. Halleck, ordering her to be sent South, not to return during the war, under penalty of being treated asaspy. The order was immediately enforced. B7A letter from Beautort, dated the 19th, says the wharves along Cape Fear River, from Wilmington to Fayetteville are literally piled with captured cotton, turpentine, pith and ro- sin, awaiting transportation to the sea coast. The value of this captured property is esti- mated at millions.
