New Yorx, March 27.—The World’s des- eh from Kinston, dated March 22, says: “Last Sunday and Monday there was severe and continuous fighting between Sherman and Johnston, bat there was no grand battle— Johnston, for retson best known to himself, declining a general engagement. The battle was set in array upon two opposite range of hills, on the south side of the Neuse river; our poke: Renan} ‘Westward, and both armies de- feuded by ‘works; those of Sherman, of course, hastily constructed. The fighting lasted two days, vere which desperate charges ‘were made on both sides, the rebels charging our lines three times, and five times our mea made counter-charges. The fizhting on Sunday was mostly done by the 20th and 14th corps, and on Menday the 15th and 17th come up and partially relieved them. Nsw YorRK, March 27.-The steamship Evening Star, from New Orleans on the 19th, and Havana on the 23d, has arrived here. The New Orleans Independent, of the 17th, has the following: A lady who arrived last week from Mobile, states that when she left the city all apperances indicated that it was being evacuated by the rebel troops. The re- port of theevacuation is credited by the mili- tary authorities here. The property of J. P. Benjamin and John Slidell, in New Orleans, has been condemned in the United States District Court, as a forfeit to the United States. The markets on the 16th were almost nomi- nal. LOCAL NEWS. Litch- field, protesting, in behalf of the citizens of the Seventh Ward, against the order of the Provost Marshal General, permitting substitutes in the city to be credited to the 16th District of Penn- sylvania. Mr. Noyes, in this connection, of- fered the following joint resolution : Whereas, it has been stated that an order has been issued by the Provost Marshal General, authorizing Provost Marshal Major O’ Beirne to creditsubstitutes to the 16tn Districtof Pennsyl- vania; and whereas, this order is calculated te operate very detrimentally to the interests of the people of this District: Therefore Be it Resolved by the Board of Aldermen and Board of Common Council, That a committee of three members trom each Board be appointed to act in conjunction withthe Mayor in wait- ing upon Provost Marshal General Fry to re- spectiully protest against the putting in of sub- stitntes in this city to the credit of any other District, and to ask that the order be rescinded: adepted. And be itenacted, That the provisions of the ssid set be, and the same are hereby, ex- tended to all cslored persons who are residents of the city of Washington, and who were upon the tax booke of the Corporation on the 13th of December, 1564.
