THE EVENING STAR. The President's Health. = We believe it was quite possible to have se. jected a stronger man for President; yet that does pot contiict with the fact that his death or permanent disability now would be acalamity —very eral and justly deplored. We can- not forecast the future which that bereavemen would open:yet we think few Americans, even though disloyal, can wish toconfront its reali- zation. Bat, if thePresident is to outlive the term on Which he bas just entered,a radical retrench- ment must be promptly effected in the current | exactions on his time and energies. He has been carried further toward the grave by his four years in the White House than hecould have been by ten years of constant Jabor in the courts corona farm. All who knew bim in 160 and have met him in 1865, must have ob- served his air of fatigue, exhaustion and lan- guor—so diflprerent from his old hearty, care- less, jovial ‘manner. We are sure no good hysician, who has seen him since last Decem- 4 ean haye heard of his recent iliness with- e@ut feeling that this = what might and jave been expected. vor human ctrength is finite, and po man eould endure the constant tension of his facul- ties imposed on President Lincoln -withouc @ more or less speedy break-aown. Go when when you will to the White Mouse, from early yoorn until a jate hour ast night. and you fiad the ante-chamber filled with a crowd of eager solicitors of a special interview with the Presi- dent. “Only five minutes,” pleads one who may have come from Lowa for the purpose, and who thinks it very hard that the President can- not give him that minimum of attention when he has given so much of his time and energies to ad ce what he mistakenly considers that President’s fortunes, not reflecting that even a five minutes’ interview with every one who should derire an audience would yery soon place our Chief Magistrate beyond the scope of earthly aspiration. Let it be under- derstood that if the President would confer for even two minutes with every one who might fancy that he had an occasion for an interview, and Mr. Lincoln conid not remain above ground for even a month longer It being simply impossible that the President should grant an andience toeyery one who solicits it, we urge that decided steps should at once be taken in the premises. If his life is indeed worth saving, those steps cannot be taken amomenttoo soon. The post-office at ‘Wampsville or the tidewaitership at Patchogue may be a matter of grave consequence to the people of that respected locality; but the lite ef the President happens at present to be of even greater consedience to the country in general; and this cannot be pre- served if he is to receive deputations and listen to conflicting statements touching rival aspi- ants to said post-office or inspectorship. Ifit be determined that Mr. Lincoln’s life is of greater consequence than the rival interest in question, then that determination demands in- stant and resolute action in its support.— New York Tribune. (> The French « Blue Book,” just issued, abows that the year Isé1 bas witnessed the continuance of the construction of the ships of the new fleet within the limitof the credits allowed to the department, om basis previously Adopted. At the present day the total number of ships of this new fleet amounts, exclusive of gunboats, to one hundred and twenty-three. During the past year the -new fleet has only been increased (as regards ships actually come pleted) by one iron-cased trigate of 1,000 horse- Each and three light-draught despatch boats. jut, in addition, the fleet numbers in course of completion afloat five iron-clad frigates, two iron-clad batteries. four screw corvettes, two paddle despatch boats, and three transport Workshops. Finally, twenty-six steam ves- seis in various stages of completion are at pres- ent on the stocks. U7 The vault of the bank at Millville, N. J., was blown open by burglars last Sunday night, but nothing was taken. A letter from wmattownsays: 46 The doors were of chilled iron, and were fastened with a patent combination lock. With great exertion the burglars drilled a small Bole through the deor into the lock, and in ac- complishing this they broke all their arulls. Through this they inserted a powerful charge— perhaps more ph se BA than they intended to— in the lock. he torce of the powder both buret the outer and inner doors of the vault asunder, besides shattering the mason work. ‘The heavy wroughtinner doors were bent like pasteboard. @7 The paymaster’s new vault at the Springfield Armory hasa foundation of solid Wasonry thirteen feet thick, and the walls are four feet thick, with the exception ef a space ip them three inches wide, the air in which helps to make the vault fire-proof. Internaily, the vaul: ten feet high, amd the floor ts six by eeven feet. 7 The costly experiments which have been aD progress for several months, to decide final- Jy therelative merits of the Armstrong and Whitworth patterns, have practically closed. In point of range, Whitworth has the adyan- tage, while with regard to penetration or de- atructive force the Oi, rth was, upon the whole, on the side of the Armstrong guns. [7 The Empress Eugenie has written to the Queen and the Sovereigns in Europe, propos- ing that, without distinction of creed, all shall join at once for the purpose of effecting 4 suit- able resteration of the holy sepulchre at Jerus- Shems which is now in astateof utter disre- pair.
