THE EVENING STAR. W. BD. WALLACH, Editor and Prepricter. _ WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY . MARCH 22, 1865, a7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. BEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. —————_ es Late from Richmond. # BOGUS VIOTORY OVER SHERMAN, THEY OLAIM TO HAVE REPULSED | HIM FOUR TIMES IN ONE DAY, AND PREVENTED HIM FROM JOINING SCHOFIELD. —_ THEY FIND OUT THEIR MISTAKE. joo A CARD FROM SENATOR HUNTER, Zon ea :$ BEING A RECONSTRUC- HE DENIES BEING A. ————___ . DAVIS' ARABIAN HORSE CAP- JER T URED IN NORTH CAROLINA. Ss ahs Richmond papers of Monday have been re- ceived. They have no news except astate- ment, not given on any authority, that four di- | visions of Sherman's army were repulsed by Hardee, at some point north of Fayetteville, on the 16th inst. The Dispatch alleges that Sherman’s forces | engaged were repulsed four successive times, with heavy loss, and turned off the course they | were pursuing, which, in the Confederate opinion, would prevent him from forming a | junction with Schofield. The Sentinel (Jef! Davis’ organ) says there is no official information of the repulse ef Sher- man, but gives credence to it. | ‘The Richmond papers have probably found ; out their mistake by this time, and that Sher- man jas formed a junction with Schofield, and bas not been whipped by Hardee. Senator Hunter is out in a card in the Rich- mond papers denying that he is in favor of re- construction. He advises the people of the South to fight as long as their President ( Jeff.) i and commander-in-chief (Lee) think there is | any hope of success. The Prspatch announces the arrival at City Point of a large fleet of gunboats and trans- ports, and says the Yankees have erected saw- mills, machine shops, &c., of all descriptions, | and made 8 manufacturing city of it. The Richmond pupers say that the Arabian horse presented to Jeff. Davis by the Viceroy of ; Egypt, and brought overby a blockade runner, and which was sent into the interior of North | Carolina for safe keeping, has been captured | by Sherman's scouts, who announced their intention to send it to Presideat Lincoln. COMMIFSARY DEPARTMENT. In the absence of Col. Bell, from the city, Capt. Bridges is in charge of the Commissary Depot on G street. This office has now added | to its immense responsibilities the supplying | of cattle to Sherman’s army, and requires not | only experience, but the greatest patience and energy on the part of its managers. To-day, | bids were opened for the hides, tallow, hoofs, | horns, chucks, skins and tongues of the Govy- ernment beef cattle. The bidders were:— | Thomas Clarendon, $10 51; Wiiliam F. Pentz, #10.60; and J. E. Barthgate, 12.16. The bids | are net yet awarded, but J. E. Barthgate being the highest, will probably receive the award. GeEMAn Orera._Notwithstanding thestorm | lastevening, a brilliant audience was in at- | tendance atthe Opera. The Commercial Advertiser has a Wasking- ton letter, which says: “Although sadly beset and annoyed oy of- fice-seekers, who insist on ‘rotation,” Mr acne coln is recovering rapidly from bie aeiied slight indisposition. A itiemen o'clock, on him by appointment last night, at ¥ Ch ys that altheugh Mr. Lincoln nad ~ = that hour in order to be free from intrasion, the audience room and the private office were crowd ed. Among the most unfortunate solicitors are the unprovided-for Union members of the two Jast Congrees, who consider that they hare a pre- emption right to places. Any position will be acceptable, either at home or abroad, that has 8 salary of fifteen hundred or two thousand dollars 8 year, but they must have some kind of a place, and most of them will be gratified in order te get rid of them.” This has only to go ona little longer, and the nation will have to mourn another dead President, as it so lately mourned the untimely fate of Harrison and Taylor. And wegive fair notice that we shall hold any one who pre- sumes in that case to talk of “mysterious Prov- idence,” “ inscrutable decrees,” + visitation of God,” &c., &c., a shameless imposter. The President is being killed by monstrous experi- ments on his patience and good nature— Killed by the greed and impudence of bores, who meanly calculate that they have only to bore hard enough, and « most of them will be grat- ified, in order to get rid of them.” And (as the | Commercial says) foremost among these ra- pacious experimenters on his kindness of heart are certain recently discarded members of Con- gress, who strangely seem toimagine that their ill success with the people “gives them a pre- emption right to place.” We beg leave most emphatically to dissent. It is of the gravest national consequence that | the President should now be able to fix his at- | tentiomexclusively on the national crisis, and devote all his time and thoughts to thesecuring of a satisfactory pacification of our country at the earliest practicable moment. The office- seekers are not only killing the President; they are imperiling the life of the nation. We urge the people to insist on their instant and thor- cough abatement.—N. ¥. NAVAL EXPEDITION INTO FLORIDA. ement tewards Tallahasse—Gen. New- f the Treeps-——3t. Marks —Official Re- closed to ic eR port of Admiral Str‘bling. The Navy Department to-day received the official report of Admiral Stribling, of the ex- pedition sent up to St. Marks, Florida, on the 23d ult. The vessels from St. George's Sound, under Lieutenant Commander Gibson, and the vessels with troops under the command of General Newton, arrived simultaneously at St. Marks. The naval forceimmediately made arrangements for landing the troops, which ‘was expeditiously effected, and the infantry commenced their march into the interior, to- wards Tallahassee. Every effort was made to get the vessels up the river so as to attack the forts, but without success, owing to the low water. On the 6th instant, information was received that the troops were falling back, and by this time the gunboats had succeeded in getting with in a mile and a halfof Port Leon, bat find- ing it impossible to go farther, & party was senton shore to hold the bridge, which was accomplished, and after the army crossed, the bridge was burned. On the morning of the 7th, after an interview with Gen. Newton, the squadron was ordered to drop back to an anchorage off the Light House. Gen. Newton stated to Commander Shufeld “that he had accomplished all that he contemplated at present.” Admiral Stribbling says there is no doubt that preparations had been made by staking out the channel, removing obstructions and garrisoning the tort tomake St. Marks in some sort a compensation for the loss of Wilming- ton; and Commander Shufeld adds: “As the Navy now has possession of the mouth of the tiver, (che only point which is of any naval importance whatever,) I consider the object» so far as we are concerned, fully gained.” This effectually closes the river so long as we keep an adequate force there. Afterwards the expedition destroyed three schooners under a fire of musketry. The expedition returned after capturing a quantity of tobacco, smooth-bore muskets, cartridges, caps, &c. Acting Ensign Price, executive officer of the expedition, is complimented for gallantry and energy. The only casualties sustained were one man wounded by the rebels and one by the acci- dental thrust of a bayonet in the hands of one or the crew. GUBRRILLAB.
