The Pia’ There is no social disease so wide-spread, Fo virtient, and so fatal in its attack, as the pi- ano mania. Before a girl is born, now-a-days, she is predestined to sitand extract dreadi screechingsand wailingfor atleast ten years of her mataral life. No question as to whether she possesses An @ar, And no consideration for | the ears-of cther people, is permitted to inter- fere with the decree, which is as irrevocable as the iaws of the Medes and Persians, that Katy,” or “Lucindy,” as the case may be, “must play the piano.” The poor thing may be anatural-born housekeeper, with a genius lor sweeping and dusting, washing and bak- ing, but with no more perceptions of chords | and cadences than of the sphere. Still, she will not be permitted to follow her natural bent, because it is so horribly valgar. She will be wept over, scolded and fretted at, and any lazy fine lady, sister, or cousin, held up asan example of gentility. “To be able to play the piano in company is the sinc qua non of many foolish, fond mothers’ hopes, who look back with regreton their own limited chance of education, and are apt there- fore to sadly overrate the value of what are ealled accomplishments. Playing the piano is doubtless a very good thing, when it is well done, and by & person who possesses musical taste; but otherwise it is only @ torture fora sensitive ear to listen to it. Jingle, jingle, jin- gle! thromp, thrump, thramp! Who has not shivered aud winced. and tried to appear ami- able, through the interminable hoursof asmall evening party, while some yonthfn! tormentor, harassed into the display by stupld friends, ‘Was vigorously pounding out a miscellaneous Assortment of battles and marches, songs and qusdrilles, waltzes and operas, without the slightest notion concerning them, except that certain keys in the piano correspond with cer- tain notes in the book. Excepting for evening parlor-dances, the pi- ano should never be played without the accom- paniment of a voice, unless by a Thalberg; and, even then, only a few will be found to careen- thusiastically for the mere science or grace of executior. And if this is true of a professor in the art, how much pleasure is it supposed can be obtained from hearing the monotonous and spasmodic thrumming ofa girl whose entire capacity for music has been scolded or cudg- elled into her, and who would much rather be employed in doing something else, even though it were sweeping aud wasbing dishes.—London Saturday Revie Want of Calculation in Stock Feeding. A _cotemporary states thata large farmer at the West sold last fali twenty tons of hay at six dollars perton; and again, in January, twenty ton atten dollars per ton, and thought he was making bis fortune. In the spring, however, he was compelled to go long dis- tauces to buy hay at twenty dollars a ton, giving his note, to sA@vehis stock from star- vation. Such occurrences as this show the common ‘Want of calculation among farmers in provid- ing winter food for their stock. Every man who has kept cattle and horses as long as three years, ought toknow the average amount they will consume per head each winter. The amount will of course, vary with the seasons —a long and cold winter requiring more than amild one. Ifthe animals are exposed to the ‘weather and wintry winds, the difference will be very considerable, say twenty-five or thirty per cent.; if they ure well sheltered, it will ba Seat small, say not more than ten per cent. be farmer must make his caleulations accor- dingly, and be sure to have enough for any contingency, for it wiil not be protitabie for Bim to keep them well throngh three-fourths of the winter, and then starve them to death at last. The amount required per head will also vary with the latitude, as well as the size of the animals, and the general economy in the management. Perhaps it may be taken as an average in the Northern States. that a horse will consume three tons of good hay, anda cow two tons, where good care is given, and a moderate amountof roots, meal and other food. Itis important that farmers should inform themselves well on this point,in doing which, approximate resalts may be easily obtained, by occasionally weighing the food given them during a week. Every tarmer should know the amount of Bay he Aas secured during the summer. A weighing scale for this purpose (which may be also used for weighing fattening animals) would 20on pay for itself, byenabling the owner to determine his whereabouts aceurately; but in the absence of such a seale, the occasional Weighing ofa load will soon enable him to guess the amount not very far from the marx. Every load drawn into the barm or stack, should be entered in bis memorandum book, and he will thus beenabled to know, with tolerable accuracy, how much he has on hand, and bow many Apimals it will safely carry @tRMrongh the winter. He can then lessen er increase his stock aceordingly in good season, Withont waiting until he has reached the last extremity. Those who haye nosnch account may nearly determine the amount on hand by Measuring. Hay,cut early, when the stocks are soit end fiexible will settle closer than such asiscut when nearly ripe,or waen the stocks is stiff and dry. Bat, a3 an average, good timothy hay in a mow or stack, will yield aton for every five hundred cubic feet—the top, of course, Will he lighter, and the bottom heavier, but this will bethe &verage. Olover hay will be nearly one half lighter—that ig, it will require some seyen hundred feet to the ton. A little practice in this way, with hay which has heen weighed, will enable the far- mer to jedge nearly the amouat ef hay he has stored. And this knowledge. applied as al- ready stated, will not enly enable him to meet Dis calculations with accuracy and economy, but will save him from much uneasiness and anxiety occasioned by the fear of starving his animals —Country Gentleman.
