The warehonse was destoyed to the walis, but the loss to the Government or property owners we haye not beem able to ascertain There was a large quantity of oil stored in the building, and al- though in much danger, the firemen sneceeded tn saying it. The fire department deserves credit ior the activity exhibited in its response to the call. The police also, with Superinten- dent Richards, were promptly on the ground, performing their duty. A detachment of the 3d United States infantry was speedily de- tailed, with the Veteran Reserve Corps, for guard duty around the property. Our new Steam fire engime. in charge of No. 2 Company, made good time, reaching the scene in less than eight minutes, and in less than two minutes thereafter it was at work, throwing two pow-~ erful streams. This being the first fire to which the new steamer has been called, quite & number of persons followed it down, and were highty pleased at the manner in which it was worked. A commission, composed of Master C. V. Morris, U.S. N., and Messrs. W. E. Hatchin- son and Wm. Talbert, Master Workmen, are now engaged in inquiring into the rates of wages paid in private and Government shops throughont the city with a view of fixing the rates of wages of the mechanics in the Yard. The wages in the Navy Yard are governed by the prices paid in the shops outside and in the shops in the vicinity of the Yard, and this time two members of the committee have extended their inquiries to Baltimore, visiting all the principal shops there. S#HoT Hivsety ror Love.—On Friday eve- ning, Mr. Geo, Pritchard shot himself in the breast in & house on 13th street, between Gand , but fertunately the ball did not enter a vi- tal part, but struck a bone and glanced. Mr. Pritehard was spending the evening with a young lady, Miss Anna Clingan, when some conversation passed between them in relation to marriage. Miss (lingan gave him but litcle encouragement, when he drew the pistol and fired, or it went off accidentally, wounding him as above stated. A physician was at once called and the wound dr « East Lynne; on, Tne ELorevent,” will be given at Grover’s beautiful and spacious theater to-night for the last time; Miss Lucille Western appearing, of course, in that duplex character in which she alone cin be recognized as the perfect personator. Those who have sot witnessed this thrilling emotional drama, and wept over the miseries of Lady Isabel, or smiled at the eccentricities of Corney, should be present to-night. To-morrow Miss Western appears by re- quest, and for the only time, as “Camille.” a THE LADIES of Wesley Chapel will continue their detightni festival through this week.
