In THE SENATE yesterday after the close of our report— Mr. Wilson introduced a bill giving the Pay- master Gexers! the rank of Brigadier General, nd providing for the appointment of two as- stants, who shall be ez officio inspectors gen- eral of the department, after which the re- taliation resolutions were discussed at length, and the Senate adjourned. Imperial Italian Theatre. {From La France Musicale, Dec. 18.] ®ECOND APPEARANCE OF BRIGNOLI IN DON PASQUALE. The new tenor, Mr. Brignoll, has not disap- Pointea the expectations that were formed of him on his first appearance on the boards of the Theatre Italian. Although in Martha he appeared in a very favorable light, that opera eould give buta very incomplete idea of his talent, for the reason that itis in itself quite incomplete. Ail were, however, charmed by his voice, so fall of softness, and by his style, which is most purely correct. His success was not cuestioned for a@ moment. Butthis ‘was notenough. There was due to Brignoli, notonly anordinary success, buts triamph like those to which the North Americans have accustomed him. His second appearance, which took place on Wednesday Iast, in Don Pasquale, was a veritable évent. Mario, inhis best days, has never sung the serenade better,a part whic®, it will be remembered, was the fovorite morceau of that tenor; in the other parts of the role Brignoli caused him to be en- Urely forgotten. He must be heard in the duet With M'lle Patti, andin the quartet. Whuta eharm is therein his voice! What a power of expression; and, more than that, what a pleasure and what enjoyment for the appre- ciators of good singing. We have spoken of the softness with which he sung the serenade; Bll that we could add would give but a feeble idea of the enthusiasm which he excited, The iow murmurs of the bravos, which served as an accompaniment to him, were succeeded by the warmest applause; and after two succes- sive encores Brignoli had to re-enter the cou- lesses to sing that adorable melody a second time. They called him ont after the duet in the first act, and after the famous quartet of the second, and he was recalled again, with his fellow artists. after the final rondo,m which M'lie Patti drew forth immense enthusiasm. The role of Norina, as we have often said, is exactly suited to the young primadonna. This representation has given & new proof of the fact, it is impossible te sing with more grace, ortoact with more spirit. We donot know how oftenshe was encored, but we may say that since the commencement of the season she never exercised such a power of fascina- jon. The duet of “caleso and of Delie-Sedie, was twice encored, and justly so. These two artists are in all respects unexceptionable, In short, this representation of Don Pasquale bas left nothing to be desired during the opera season. W7The Pottsville Mining Journal states that the anthracite coal trade of the year just passed amounts to 9,{02,907 tons. an increase of 5. 24 tons. With the bituminous coal the total amount is 11,741,139 tons. The increase of do- mestic coal is 630,000 tons. The decrease in foreign coal was 4%),167 tons. The colliery ca- pacity of the different regions isample to sup- ply all the ceal the market will require. Min- ers and laborers are more abundant also than they were at the beginning of last season. The supply of coal in 1-65 will depend altogether upon the transporting capacity to convey it to market. @7 The following is the latest oil story:—A man went from New York tothe Pennsylvania oul region and spent @1.500 in boring for oil, but without success. He had no funds left, bat bougnt five barrels of il on credit, carried them to his well in the night, poured the oil down his pipes, and the next morning began pumping ‘with a success which astonished all his neigh- bore. Before the flow stopped he sold his well for $7,000 and went home. The demand for home consumption the present year is estimated at 25,000 cases, and the de- mand for export at 20,000. The entire crop of 1864 is estimated at 110,000 eases, and the whole amount now on hand at 170,000 cases. m7 The health of Major General John E.
