This Department has just received nnofficial dispatches from Nashville, announcing that General "Thomas, with the forces under his Nashyiile at 9 o’clock this morning, and, al- thongh the battle is not yet decided, the whole action to-day is described ss “splendidly suc- miles, the enemy were driven from the river, from his entrenchments, from the range of hills on which hts left rested, and forced back pushed back from one to three Miles, with the loss of seventeen guns and about fifteen han- dred prisoners, and his whole line of earth- right, where no serious attempt was made to dislodge him. Toronto, Dec. 15 —There isa profound sen- sation here in regard to the Coursal’s decision in the case of the raiders. The best legal ad- thorities pronounce it contrary to law, and it meets general condemnation. Later and Important. QUEBEC, Dec. 15.—The Unbinet had a long session to-day, and it is understood that the members unanimously denounced the act of Judge Voursal in discharging the St. Albans raiders, The pretence was that the Canadian extra- dition act of IS61 was notin force, because it had not, been assented to by the (jueen in ecaneil. ifthe judge had inquired of the Government he would have found that her Majesty had specially assented to the act. He made an as- sertion agsins! the validity of the act of the Canadian Legialature witbont proof. It tarnos out that his assumption was false. The Attorney General, it is understood, ad- vised the issue of new warrants on the same night, by the judge of the superior Court of Montreal, for the rearrest ofthe raiders, some of whom have gone east to Halifax, and some west. Officers are on their track, and they cannot escape if they remain in Canada. The Canadian Government has no legal right to act directly, as the courts have inde- pendent jurisdiction. If the judges refuse to do their duty or act corruptly, they may be suspended or in some cases, dismissed. Itis probable the Council will be dismissed. Parliment, which usually meets on February 1, will be summoned to assemble in the middle of January. when laws will be passed to meet the emergency of the great change of public feeling towards the Confederates, since they bave shown an intention of embroiling the country in war. FROM PORT ROYALS, C, Fortress Monron, Dec. 14.—The steamer United States, Captain Shane, arrived here this morning from Port Royal, S.C., with a large number of released prisoners, variously estimated at from seven to eight hundred. The exchange of prisoners, under Colonel Maltord, was progressing fayorably. Nothing definite in relation to Major General Sherman’s moye- ment could be learned by the passengers who came upon the United States, but the flring of hisgnnsin the direction of Savannah river, Georgia, was distinctly heard for several days prior to their sailing from Port Royal, South Carolina. All the troops that the rebel Government had been able to hastily assemble haye been piaced in the entrenchments immediately sar- rounding Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina, so that General Sherman would meet with but very li'tle resistance on his onward march until he reached the suburbs ofeither of the two cities. where great prepa- rations have ceen made to give them a bloody reception, should he attempt the capture of either of them. Terrific Powder Mili Explosion—Six Mills Destroyed—Ten Persons Killed Witmineton, Drt, Del. 15.—Six mills tn the Hagley Yard of Duponts powder mills, near this city, exploded this morning, killing ten men, and wounding several others. The explosion was the m serious one that has * taken place here for several years. — oe PETROLEUM.—Our readers will find else- where an advertisement of the New York and Liverpool Petroleum Company. Daniel S. Dickinson is the President, and he is associated with gentlemen of experience in the business. A caretul study of the p rospectus will rey al the advantage of the investment, This dis- covery of petroleum is so recent, and the nec- essary demand so large and increasing, that this company may be said to preceed upona permanent basis. Their prospectas speaks frankly and fairly, and the name of Mr. Dick- son, Who has here, we believe, for the first time associated hisname with any corporate enterprise, should satisfy the inqnirer that it is notamere speculation. Ail of the funds paid in forms the workiug capital of the company, and no one conneeted with it is interested in selling the company land or property ata ficti- tious yalue or at any profit. Stockholders are mutually interested in ai) the profits of the company. A limited number of shares are offered ata subscription price of five dollars per share, without further tax or assessment, which is,but balfthe par value. Several ef the trustees are located in the oil region, and have @ personal supervision over the company’s aflairs, and it is expected that large quarterly’s dividends will be requ'arly paid from the Ist of January. Subscriptions at the price indicated will only be received during the present month.— Communicated.
