Our readers are reminded of the great event about to come cffin this city. By reference to another columa they will perceive that on Monday evening, the 19th instant, a promenade concert will be given by the celebrated Seveuth Regiment New York Band. To many members of the “Oan't get away club,” men whose brains are overpowered and weary, this will afford a fine treat, for one evening, at least. Care will be banished from the seat of memory, and the soul be free, charmed by the exquisite music which will be furnished them, whilst others, whose opportunities to visit the Great Metropolis are “like angel’s visits, few and far between,” will hail with delight the opportn- nity thus afforded them to enjoy “a concert of Sweet sounas.” eee eee OAaRELESssNEss.—Last evening, about four O'clock, three cars were pass! along the avenue, in frontof the Preside House, to- wards Geerge'own, all of them close together. ar No, 44 was unable to get out of the way of car No. 5, because of the ene ahead of it mak- ing slow time, and No. 5 came near running inte No. ene several fauce when the Leip stopped to fe ia er let out passengers; and, By point aded to above, did setually ran againet it, the tongue of the car via & Tew inches of striking the conductor sada lady who was in the rear of car No. 44, at the same tume breaking the tongue of his own oar. THE PORT JERVIS COUNTERPRMTERS.—These parties who, it will be remembered, wer- ar- rested by Detecu ves Clarvoe and McDevitt, of the Metropolitan Police, acting with Col. L. C. Baker, assisted by Thomas Bowles, Special Agent, U.S. Treasury Department, nad their trial on Tuesday lastin the U. S. Circuit Uourt, New York, Judge Shipman presiding. James Norris, the principal, plead guilty on the Sat- urday preceding. Marvinand Rogerson stood trial, and after a warmly contested examina- tion, in which able counsel were engaged, were conyictedin about five minutes after the case was given to the jury ~The comments of the New York Detectives were highly compli- mentary to the Washington Detectives em- ployed. a8 also the daily New York journals, publishing the account of the trial. The charge upon which Rogerson and Mar- vin were tried was of being engaged in the mannfacturé of counterfeit United States frac- tional currency. Detective J. E W. Clarvoe was the principal witness against the prison- ers. He testified that he procured anintroduc- tion to Marvin and Rogerson through Norris, snd that he made a proposal to buy & press, ink, plates, and other materials necessary to manufacture counterfeit fractional currency from them, and was to pay $5,000 for the arti- cles. The detective then called at a house in Port Jervis, N. Y., when the articles were fur- nished, with full instructions how tc use them, and one of the priseners worked off a specimen Bote to show how well the plates were made. Clarvoe declined to pay the money until ‘the articles were’ put in a trunk, placed in the hands of the railroad officials, and a check pro- cured forthesame. The prisoners acceded to the proposition, and the whole party was ar- rested by the United States detectives. Clar- voe was arrested with the others, and con- cesled his true character as a detective until the parties were brought before the solictor of the United States Treasury in Washington, Since the arrest of these, other parties have been arrested by the same officers, and are held in heavy bail for trial, or are in prison. eaereyereEe SS Horse STeatinc.—Nathan Truman wasar- Tested by Officer R. The prisoner was brought to this city and delivered to the po- lice. He put in the plea of a levy for debt, saying that complainant owed him wages, and he took the horse for the debt. Justice Thomp- son committed him to jail, toawait a requi- sition from the Governor of Maryland. Another Case.— Andrew Charleston, alias Walker, was arrested by Officer Shedd for the Jarceny of a horse belonging to Isaiah Stewart. The horse was stolen last September, and Jno. LL. Wilson was arrested, he haying the horse in his possession. He proved that he pur- chased it from John W. Glub, in good faith, and was dismissed. John W.Club was next arrested, &nd he proved that the prisoner left the horse with him to pasture, and he sold him to Wilson. with the consent of the prisoner. The prisoner gave no good account of his Pos- Session, and was sent to jail for court. Se ee MISTAKING HIS AUTHORITY.—Last night a teamster, named David Blair, attacked a mar- keter named R. F. Trail, and undertook to take from him « lot of harness, upon the ground that the harness was Government property. Su- perintendent Richards came up at the time and demanded the teamster’s authority to take the harness, The teamster did not show the au- thority, but proposed to do so when he got near alight. Officer Draine came up and took him tothe Third Ward station. This morning he told Justice Thompson that he though he had a rightto take Government harness when he found tt im wrong hands, and he thonght this was Government harness. Justice Thompsen ciismissed hima on the ground that he, Blair, had been told by bis wagon master to look ont for Government harness, andacted under the wrong impression that this was harness he was di- rected to look after, and he had a right to take it wherever he saw it. —————E CHARGE OF 4Rs0N.—L[ast night officer Gess- ford arrested Michael Geary on the cnarge ot setting fire to the house of Mrs. Bart, on 6% street, between D and E(Island).
