The carriage was stopped near () Street, and one of the yonng men (after his comrades had disposed themselves sentry- Wise, as if to gnard against observation,) Walked away 4 littledistance, when he paused, Qnd after peering in every girection to see if anybody was near, commenced digging with a spade, and scon excavated a neat little grave. He then beckoned to one of his comrades, who cautiously drew from the bottom of the hack A coffin shaped box of small size, which he took to ihe grave, which was then hastily lied, atter which the parties speedily de. camped. Their proceedings had, however, been watched by curious eyes, and the police {| Were immediately notified, while one young Man, actuated by a sense of duty, went, at considerable personal inconvenience, all the ‘way to Georgetown for the coroner, it being quite appsrent ‘ha: a shocking case of infanti- cide bad been perpetrated. The veteran cor- | oner, however, declined to attend, unless sum- moned by the police. The police accordingly made the preliminary investigation, and pro- | ceeded to disinter the body, in the presence of | the parties who bad been so indetatigable in bringing the hideous crime to light. The principal witness was Margaret Holmes, who testified that she herself was not decent; she made no pretensions to being decent; that Mrs. Ellenburger came up to the synagogue on D street to get witness and another girl to go to her house as boarders; that on Saturday last she went to the house, and remained until Monday evening, receiving the company of men and paying half she made to Ellenburger or wife. A good mary soldiers visit the place, and she had seen them get liquor there, and got liquor for herself. They ali in the house had the same business; she had lived in a house of prostitution at No. 101 Washington street, New York, with Mrs. Elienburger. Officer L. L. Milstead testified that recen'ly he was in the house, when he saw women sit- ting in soldiers’ laps, and one woman tumble on & settee with a soldier. i Josephine Snyaer protested that she was in the house only as a servant. The justice fined Ellenburger #20.91 for sell- ing liquor without license, @ like amount for seiling to soldiers, and held him to security tor his appearance at court to answer for keeping @ bawdy house. ges Fire.—About 5 o'clock this morning officer Sullivan sounded an alarm of fire from box 17, (Meigs engine-house,) corner of F and 22d street, which brought out the fire departments (Government.and city) promptly. It proved to be the still-house at H.C. Wilson’s lamp black factory, at the foot of the canal, which was mostly consumed, occasioning a loss of about $1.00, The machinery being encased in heavy brick werk was not damaged, and the apparatus getting to work promptly, and the canal being near, from which they obtained water, the adjacent buildings, including the valnable lamp black factory, were saved. The fire was caused by carelessness, a work- man, whose business it was to thaw the still- ing tank, containing rooting pitch, preparatory to drawing.it off, having left the furnace under the cock when he turned it on, the pitch im- mediately took fire, enveloping the building in flames.
