In ashort time the enemy were tn full pos- session of the post. They blew up the earth- works and destreyed all the temporary and other buildings, except the residence of Uol. Armstrong, who Is either now, or has been, in the rebel army. The cutting of the telegraph wires gaye the alarm to the railroad men at Piedmont, where- upon all the rolling stock of the company and other movable property was sent away. Soon ate ine enemy reached Piedmont, and destroyed The road house of the company, a large workshop, and a considerable auantity of valuable stationary machinery. So far as is known, no damage was done to the railroad track or bridges. The(enemy are reported to have left ma southerly direction. There is reason to hope that the raiders willbe overtaken by forces sent in pureuit. THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, Official Vote of New York. ALBANY, Noy. 29.—The State canvassers concluded their canvass of the electoral yote of the State to-day, and deciared the result as follows: Horace Greeley, Union, 368,156; Preston King, Union, 368,726; William Kelley, Demo- crat, 961,981; Washington Hunt, Democrat, 361,986. The vote on the State ticket has not yet been pecan vassed. The vote of New York city, Herkimer, and one or two other counties, has not yet been re- ceived. < Messengers were despatched this afternoon to notify the Union electors of their election. The Sinking of the Florida—Further Par- ticulars. Fortress Monroe, Nov. 28.—Some days since the captured pirate Florida, whilst lying off Fortress Monroe, was accidentally run into by an army transport, with troops on board, cutting her on one side almost to the water’s edge and carrying away the.jib-boom, Xc., causing her to leak badly. Admiral Porter or- dered her to be anchored off Newport News, at the mouth of the James river, where she sunk during last night, the officers and crew in charge of her not being able to keep her free. She is supposed to have started a new leak. ‘Vessels bound down the James river report that only her topmasts are visible. Change of Commands. CHAMBERSBURG, Noy. 29.—The Repository of this evening states, in confirmation of a previous report, that Major General Couch has been relieved from the command of this department, and by order of Lieutenant Gen’l Grant, assigned with General Thomas in the field. Geucral Cadwaiaacr, wno is now here, will assume command of this department. General Couch Is now in Massachusetts, on leave for afew days. ANOTHER MyYsTERY.—The body of an un- known man was found in a corn stack, ona farm near Freehold, N. J., a day or two since, under circumstances which showed that a shocking murder had been committed. The skull had been fractured in two places, a gash an inch and a half in length cut in the left check, and an instrument had been thrust down the throat, nearly severing the tongue. A severe blow had also evidently been inflicted upon the chin, crushing it, and caushing it to turn black. Fifteen wounds in all had been inflicted upon the body of the man. A coro- ner’s inquest was held, but no additional light ‘was thrown upon the matter. Governor Par- Ker, of New Jersey, has offered a reward of three hundred dollars for the apprehension and conviction of the criminals. THE U.S. Stoop or WAR WyoMING.—This admirable vessel, which for nearly three years has been cruising in and near Chinese waters, arrived in the port of Baltimore a short time since for the purpose of undergoing thorough repairs, and is now on the marine railway of Messrs. John T. Fardy & Bro., seuth Balti- more; where the work is being done., About 250 men are engaged, and notwithstanding the extent of work she will be launched in the space of thirty days, providing there be no delay in the machinery department. When the national difficulties commenced the Wy- oming was lying in the port of Charleston, to which coast she made an experimental trip upon being completed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. HEERING RUN TRoTTING Course.— Yesters Gay a trotting race cameotf over the Herring run course, Mr. Daniel Steever, proprietor, which drew alargeattendance. The race was for a purse of $250, best three in five. Hiram ‘Temple, Monarch and Otsego Chief were en. tered, the first twoin harness and the last to wagon. The race was an exciting one, and ‘was won by OtsegoChief. Hiram Temple won the first heat—time 243; in the second heat Monarch was drawn. Otsego Chief won the last two heats— time 2.36—211. Considering the condition of the track, the time was regard- ed as extraordinary. The Flora Temple Asso- ciation have these races in charge, and every ne is conducted under their eyes.—Baltimore Sun. AN ACTOR TO BE SHOT For DeserTIon — About six weeks ago a young man named W. R. Barre, an actor at Col. Wood’s Museum, in Chicago, was arrested and taken to Camp Dougilas,asa deserter from the army. Sub- sequently Barre was taken to Chattanooga and tried by a general court martial, on the charge ofdesertion while in the face of the enemy, on picks duty. He was last week found guilty of the charges and specification and sentenced to be shot on the fifteenth day of December. His real name is Oliver H. Wheel- er, and his age about 22 years, Soe ee ww? The young lady screamed, while the dog made rapid circles, snuffing the air and evidentally bewildered to know what had become of the coon. The situation of the young Indy was critical and embarrassing. She was afarid to move for fear the coon would bite, and the coon declined to leave bis retreat until the dog had retired. Finally the dog was stoned off, the boy dragged the coon from his hiding place, and the yousg lady went her way with the lively conscious- ness of having experienced a newsensation. Many of the leading Uopper- heads said they would not submit to Lincoln's administration and in case he was elected “we should see the deyil topay”—that “they would let their property go in the general conflagra- tion.” Timmediately notified the authorities at Washington of what I had heard. REPORTING BY MACHINERY.—An instru~ ment has been invented by Mr. Boyis, for the purpose of taking short hand notes with more than usual rapidity.. It consists of a series of levers worked by keys, like apiano forte, and acting on types, which impress themselves on a strip of paper that is gradually unrolled. It is said that an ordinary reporter, with one finger only, can work as quickly as the beet shorthand writer, and thatt by. using pboththe hands, the rapidity is immensely in- creased.—London Printers Register. &7 A man, supposed to be insane, paid in Cleveland, Ohio, the other day, a strangely modeled piece of white metal and departed.
