Special Dispatch to the Star.} New York, June 25, 1! a. wM.—Gold LOCAL NEWS. ee SSS WoRK SUSPENDED ON THE CENTER Man- kET-Hovusye.—This morning, Secretary Usher addressed a letter to Mayor Wallach apprising him of the fact that the House of Representa- tives had passed a joint resolution relative to the obstruction of the public squares and res- ervations of the city and with ard to the building of the new Center Market-House, and Suggesting @ suspension of the work upon the building until the action of Congress should be more fully known. Mayor Wallach atonce directed a suspen- | sion of the work, and by letter apprized Sec- retary Usher of the tact and sugested that some action more explicit and full should be | had at once. The Mayor at the same time addressed a let- | ter to Hon. John B. Steele, chairman of the House Committee on the District of Columbia affairs, and stated that at an interview he (the Mayor) bad with the committee last week, he understood that some action would be taken by Jongress, placing the Government between the Corporation and the contractors in case the latter should claim damage by reason of the work being stopped. The Mayor also suggests | thatif Congress should adjourn without far- ther action in the premises, the Corporation | will be placed in a rather awkward position. Thus the matter ends at present, and the workmen will quit work to-day, as soon as to they raise the unfinished portion of the wall the height of that completed, and level it off. A few days ago, it will be remembered, we ublished a letter addressed by Mayor Wal- ack to Mon. B. B. Frencp, wherein he showed conclusively that the Genter Markethouse ground was set apart for that purpose in the original plans by Gen. Washington, and that fans Sth street does not exiend south ot the Ayenue acroes the market house reser- in said vation. There, is no doubt that the members of Con- gress who voted against the market being con- tinued in its present locslity were imposed upon by the representations of interested | parties who have axes to grind of their own in the way of private markets if they can get tid of the Center Markst. It is certain that if this leading central market is abolished, the prices of marketing will go up from 15 to 25 per cent., a fact that comes home to Congressmen as well as to housekeepers generally in the city. i ee Tur Witex-Browyn Caszr,—This morning, the trial of the case of Mrs, Wiley agt.
