A Story of Whist, I tell the story as nearly as I can as he rem lated it to me: «I used to play agood deal with Rechberg,” sald he, ‘and took pleasure in wor- rying him, for he was @ great purist in his play, and was outraged with anything that could not be sustained by any authority. In fact, each game was followed bya discussion of full half an hour, tothe intense mortifica- tion of the other players, though very amn- sing to me, and offering large opportunity to irritate and plague the Austrian, «One evening, after a number of these dis- cussions, in which Rechberg had displayed an even unusual warmth and irritability, 1 found myself opposed to him in a game, the interest of which had drawn around us a large assem- blage ef spectators—what the French designate as la galerie. Toward the conclusion of the game it was my turn to lead, and! playeda card which so astounded the Austrian minis- ter that he laid down his cards upon the table and stared fixedly at me. “In allmy experience of whist,” said he, deliterately, «I never saw the equal of tnat.’* “Of what?” asked IL. “Of the card you have just played,” rejoined he. ‘It isnot merely that such play violates Cre ee of the game, but it actually stultifes all your own combinations.” “I think differently, Count,” said I, «> maintain that it is a good play, and I abide by it.” ‘* Let us decide it by a wager,” said he. «In what way 1” «sTnus: We shall leaye the question to the galerie. You shall allege what you deem to be the reasons for your play, and they’ shall de- cide if they accept them as valid,’ ««Tagre@, What will you bet?’ “Ten Napoleons—twenty, fifty, five hun- dred, if you like!’ cried he, warmly, «<I shall say ten. You don't like losing, and I don’t want to punish you too heayily.’ « ‘There is the jury, sir,’ said he haughty, ‘make your case. “«¢ The wager is this,’ said I, ‘that, to win, I shall satisfy these gentlemen that for the card I played I had sufficient and good reason.’ “se Yes.’ «««My reason was this, then—I looked into: your hand? « I pocketed his ten Napoleons, but they were the last I won of him, Indeed, it tooka month before he got over the shock.” COLLISION OF AUTHORITY Between Goy- ERNOR PIZRPONT AND GENERAL ButTLER.— Goy. Pierpont, of Va, has issued an address to the loyal citizens of Norfolk, in which he says: “I have received reliable intelligence that Gen. Shepley. acting uder the orders of Gen. I know of no authority in the State or Federal laws authorizing the people to abrogate the civil laws of the State-in any city or county, and such &ct can only be considered revola- tionary.
