The election passed off very quietly, excellent order having been maintained throughout the city, partly from the fact that the military au- thorities had by crder closed all saloons where liquor was to be obtained, but especially from 2he vigilance of the Metropolitan Police, who ‘were out in full force, exerting an influence of order and decorum in every ward of the city. There were ceriainly fewer arrests yesterday trom drunkenness and disorderly condact than has been the case for years past on election days. Throughout the day the contest was con> ducted with animation on both sides, though with commendable good feeling between the psrtizens of the respective candidates for the | mayeralty, both being admitted to be estima- ble gentlemen, and both well fitted to grace the position in question. The statement published in the second edi- tion of the Siar yesterday afternoon afforded a correct idea of the way in which the election was going throughout the city, as the result tully established. According to custom the people began to gather at the City Hall in the evening to hear the returns. The first announcement made ‘was to the effect that Mr. Wallach had carried the first precinct of the Fourth Ward by 113 foajority, and it created some enthusiasm. In a few moments word arrived from the Seventh Ward that Mr. Semmes had a majority of 4-0 there, which looked like a socdologer to the Wallach men. Subsequently came another | re port, reducing the majority in that ward to | ‘<0 for Mr. Semmes, and it afterwards went down to 400. Next came a report from the Fitth Ward, that Wallach had there re- ceived a majority of 210 or 306 yotes. This created enthusiasm and cheers for Wallach. A few moments afterwards Mr. M. McOath- an rode up on horseback and announe Waliach had received a majority of 2 Sixth Ward. This annonncement renewed the enthusiasm of the Wallach side, and shortly , after news came in from the First aud Second Wards, which placed Mr. Wallach’s election by a large majority beyond a doubt, and then the cheerimg on the part of Mr. Waliach’s iriends became loud and strong, and the crowd moved over to the Mayor's residence on Lonis- jana Ayenue, and & large number of friends en- tered sud congratulated him upon the victory his faithfulness in office and his popularity as mtleman had achieved. Loud calls were ade for the Mayor, and he eventually ap- peared and addressed the assembled multitude as follows: My Friends; and if ever a man had a right to address a muititude as his friends, I feel that I haye that right mow. [Cheers, and cries ot «Thats so,” ‘*‘We are yoar friends,” &c.] If ever I felt grateful to you it is at the present moment.
