After our telegraphic report closed yester- day— On motion of Mr. Cameron, of Pennsylvania the States were called that aroll of the dele- gates from each might be furnished to the Sec- retary. Mr. Stevens, of Pennsylvania, moved that if there were any delegates present from States im secession, tne names of the delegates be sent in to be submitted to the Committee on Cre- dentials, but that such States be not ealled. Mr. Lane, of Kansas, opposed the motion, and urged that the delegates of all the States and Territories be handed in alike; the ques- tion as to their admission to be decided by the Committee on Credentials. Mr. Maynard, of Tennessee, also most elo- quently urged that the claims of those suffering men’ in the States in rebellion should not thus be slighted His remarks were greeted with storms of applause, . Alter considerable deyate the motion to call the names of all the States prevailed, including the Territories of Colorado, Nevada, and Ne- braska, as these Territories were now organiz- ing State governments under enabling acts of Congress, and would cast their votes as States at the next Presidential election. The other Territories were then called, and all were found represented. On motion ot Mr. Lane, all the States, ex- cepting Missouri, which has sent two sets of delegates, were called upon to name one mem- ber to compose the committee on credentials. A committee on credentials and a committee to nominate permanent officers were appoint- ed, and the convention then adjourned until 7 o'clock, at which hour it reassembled, and the committee on permanent organization reported ex-Gov. Dennison, of Ohio, for chairman, and adelegate from each State as vice presidents. Gov. Dennison was conducted to the chair by Senator Lane and Hon. G. A. Grow, and upon assuming the position, addressed the con- vention and congratulated the members upon the favorable auspices under which they had assembled. Atthe conclusion ot Gov. Dennizon’s remarks Parson Brownlow, of Tennessee, was invited to address, which he didin his usual elegant style, denying that Tennessee had ever been out of the Union, and expressing a preference for Mr. Lincoln for the nomination. This an- nouncement was received with applause. The Convention adjourned until 9 o'clock this morning. ARMY OF THE POTOMAC: The Attack on our Lines on the 4th—Fear- fal Loss of the Enemy—The Road te the White House Guarded—Condition of our Wounded. Correspondence of the Associated Press.} HITE Hovsg, June 5.—The news from the front for the past two days is meagre. Nothing but skirmishing has occurred, exceptthe usual nightly attack for the purpose of feeling our lines, and to learn whether any change in po- sition is being made. The charge made on the third corps on Sat- urday night resulted in a loss to the rebels of about three hundred killed and over one thon- sand wounded, few of whom they carried away, owivg toour command of the ground. Last evening, another attack was made, the re- sult of which has not been ascertained. The wounded are nearly all brought from the front, and this place ie yery much crowd- ed. The facilities for their shipment to Wash- ington seems very hmited, although a large Bumber are being sent off. There is a great Jack of physicians here, hundreds of wounds remaining undressed for hours, resulting in manydeaths The aid societies are very busy distributing their supplies, but the demand is so great that it 1s impossible toreach all. Some States are unrepresented. New York among the number, excepting by the Sanitary and Christian Commissions. A meeting was beld last evening by the sey- eral organizations to organize a system of re- lief, and to facilitate the shipment of supplies tothis pomt. Delegates were appointed to go to Washington to make arrangements. HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF POTOMAC, June 5, 1864.—The rebels attacked the 2d corps and a poston of the 6th corps last evening, but were andsomely repulsed, aftera desperate struggle. They advanced several times, their lines being cut to pieces at each attempt to reach our works. Their loss must have been fearful, as our men took them at short range, while onr batteries swept them down in masses. Our lors was very slight. A shell exploded among Hancock's staff, toking cif a leg of one of them. His name has not been ascertamed. The report of a train having been captured yes'erday turns out to be incorrect. The road is guarded all the way from the White House to the front, principally by colored troops. Later.—Our men are busily engaged dig- ging towards the works of the enemy, and the attack last night was on 2 working party. » BUTLER’S DEPARTMENT. Operations of Guerrillas on James River. (Correspondence Philadelphia Inquirer.) ForRTRESS MONROE, June 5.—The rebel guer- | rillas have again been at work on the south side of the James River. In my last dispatch I mentioned the fact that these guerrillas had run batteries down to the river shore at Hog Island, about 30 miles from Fortress Monroe, and fired seyeral shots into a transport that waseoing up. This happened on_ Friday afterroon The experiment was repeated last evening, fcr as the steamer Herr was passing that point a concealed battery placed on the edge of the woods opened fire and sent two shells into the vessel. Fortunately no material damage was dore, and no one was hurt. Gen. Butler will undoubtedly put a stop to this sort of fun as soon as the facts are pre- sented tohim. A detachment of cavalry sent from Norfolk atthe proper time would most likely be able to bag the rebels engaged in this species of amusement. ‘hese batteries arerun by them down to the water’s edge, on the approach of a steamer, a few shot fired, and back they run out of sight. Asan illus- tration of what a seven months’ child might become, Dr. Locock referred to Earl Russell, Her Majesty’s Chief Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, whose sagacious policy with respect to the Dano-German difficulty was no doubt fresh in the recollection of her Royal Highness at the time. The unfortunate men- tion of Earl Russell as a type of physical and intellectual vigor, sent the poor Princess of Wales outof the room, like Queen Boadices, “ full of rage and full of grief.” ®7Some courts in England have a queer way of trying suits. A skye terrier was found ata dog tanciers. The dog fancier refused to give the animal up, and the case was referred to the police court. Three witnesses swore that the dog belonged to the lady, and three other wit- nesses swore that it belonged to the dog-fancier. In this dilemma the terrier was put in the wit- ness box, by order of the magistrate, and straightway gave conclusive heed noagriy by snubbing the trader in canine flesh, and show- ing every mark of affection for his mistress.
