In this contingency I accept the nomination at seated and as apreliminary step I have Tesigned my commission in the army. This was a sacrifice it gave me pain tomake. Bui. I had for a long time fruitlessly endeavored to obtain service. I make this excrifice only to regain liberty of speech, and to feave nothing in the way of discharging to my utmost aoility the task you have set for me. With my earnest and sincere thanks for your expressions of confidence and regard, and for the many honorable terms in which you ac- called upon the Ohio delegation last night, and | quaint me with the actions of the Committee, speeches were made by Hon. ©. Delano, ex- Governors Todd and Dennison, and others, all of whom spoke of, President Lincoln as their choice for the nomination, and the announce- ment was received with lond cheers. - At appears to be @ foregone conclusion that Mr. Lincoln will be nomimated for the re- election, and the only contest appears for the Viee Presidency. Gn this subject @ corres- pondent of a cotemhporary says: “The interest appears to center around the Vice Presidency. The lends of General Cameron are here in large numbers, and have been exceedingly pray urging the claims of that statesman, It was theught that the dele- gation from Ohio would favor his nomination. ‘We understand that no decision has’ been lam, gentiemen, yery reapechtally and traly ‘OUS, . Governor Johnson, Of Ténnessee, is possitly the strongest cendidate, anditis very, certain that {fhe and Mr, Lineoln were not from the same section of the;country, he would be nom- inated on the first.balot. A large body of del- egates, particularly from New England, urge the claims of Mr. Hamlin, on the ground that 1t would be invidious to renominate Mr. Lin- coln and not his Vice Pfesident. General Dix and Daniel S. Dickinson aré urged by. friends from New York and some of the Western States. The real contest will be between the delegates of the East, for the Western dele- gates will nominate whoever the East desire Sor the Vice Presidency. “The name of General Butler is mentioned, on the ground that it is policy to please the radicals by nominating a representative radi- cal men.” Ex-Goy. Dennison, of Ohio, is spoken of as chairman of the convention. It will be seen by the following extract that Secretary Chase has authorized the withdrawal of his name as a candidate: “The following important letter from Sen- ator Shermen, rejative to the use of Secretary Chase’s name asa candidate, was addressed to the editor of the Cincinnati Volks Blatt, rdel- egate from the first (Cincinnati) district, ot Hamilton county, Ohio, This gentleman has long been known &s an advocate of Governor Chase's claims for the Presidency, and, de- sirmg to know whether the Secretary would allow the use of his mame before the conven- tion, addressed Senator Sherman a letter on the subject, to which the subjoined is a reply: WasnINnGTon, June 5, 1964. My Dear Sir: I know from repeated cor- versations with Goy. Chase that he has no de- sire connected with the action of the ccnyen- tion, except that the manifest will of the peo- ple in favor of the renomination of the Presi- lent be faithfully executed by the convention, and that its declaration of principles be ex- plicit and decided. In this opinion] 1 heartily coneur, You are authorized to say this much for either of us to any one who would be af- tected by our opinion. Very truly, yours, JOHN SHERMAN, Hon. M. A. Jacori.” THE CLEVELAND CONVENTION, Gen. Fremont Accepts the Nomination for the Presidency. On the 3d instant, the committee appointed tor the purpose atthe Cleyeland Convention, addressed Jetters to John O. Fremont and John Cochran, formally announcing their nomina- tions as candidates for the Presidency and Vice Presidency of the United States, Gen. Fremont replied on Jane 4th, and ex- pressed thanks for the nomination. He con- siders the position of candidate of the conven- | tion an «honorable and difficult one,” and says: “Very honorable, because in offermg it to me you act in the name of agreat number of citizens who seek above all things the good of their country, and who have no sort of selfish interestin view. Very difficult, because in ac- cepting the candidacy you propose to me lam exposed tothe reproach of creating a schism in the party with which I have been identified. “Had Mr. Lincoln remained faithful to the principles he was elected to defend, no schism could have been created, and no contest conld haye been possible. This is not an ordinary election, it is @ contest for the right even to have candidaies, and not merely as usual for the choice among them. Now, for the first time since ‘7ti, the question of constitutional liberty bas been brought directly before the people for their consideration and vote. The ordinary rights secured under the constitution and the laws of the country have been violated and extraordinary powers have been usurped by the Executtve. It is directly before the people now tosay whether or not the princi- ples established by the Kevolution are worth maintaining. If, as we have been taught to believe, those guaranties of liberty which made the distinc. tive yalue and glory of our’ country are in truth inviolably sacred, then there must be a rotest against the arbitrary violation which ad not even the excuse of necessity. The schism is made by those who force the choice between ashametul silence ora protest against wrong. In such considerations originated the Cleveland Conyention. It was among its ob- jects to arouse the attention of the people to such facts, and to bring them to realize that while we are saturating southern soil with the best blood of the country, in the name of Liberty, we haye really parted with it at home. To-day we have in the country the abuses of a military dictation without its unity of action and vigor of execution. An administration marked at home by disregard of constitutional rights, by its violation of personal liberty and the liberty of the press, and, as a crowning shame, by its abandonment of the right of asy- lum—aj right especially dear to all free na- tions. Abroad, its course has been character- ized by & feebleness and want of principle which has misled European powers and driven them toa belief that only commercial interests and personal aims are concerned, and that no great principles are involved in the issue. The admirable conduct of the people, their readiness to make every sacrifice demanded of them, their forbearance and silence under the suspension of everything that could be sus- nded, their many acts of heroism and sacri- ices, were all rendered fruitless by the inca- pacity, or, to speak more exactly, by the per- sonal ends for which the war was managed. ‘This incapacity and selfishness naturally pro- duced such results as lea the Enropean pow- ers, and, logically enough, to the conviction that the North, withits greatly superior popu- lation, its immense resources, and. its credit, will never be able to recover the Sonth. Sym- pathies which should have been with us from the outset of the war were turned against us, and in this Way the Administration had done | the.country adouble wrong abroad. It cre- ated hi ity, or, at best, indifference among those who would have been its friends if if the real intentions of the people could have been better known; while at the same time it neg- lected no occasion for making most hu- miliating concessions. st this disastrous condition of affairs the Cleveland Convention was a protest. ‘The principles which form the. basis of its platform have my unqualified and cordial ap- . probation, but I cannot so heartily concur in 8ll the measures which you propose. I do not, believe that Ns batt extended to the prop- erty ot aH rebels is practicable, and if it were so, I don’t think ita measure of soand policy. ielsa & question belonging to the le them-~ decide, and is a per 0 ion for le exercise be Bheeecs ‘ori erie ae: authority, war, measure; 5 ning of a = which might be. ne ‘ 3 naderwina the x prompt: 3s 1 fiscation; ar tee not as & oF | Bee after the sir a aE surrec! He estimated that at the end of the fiseal year the public debt would be thirty-five hundred millions of dol- lars, with a necessity for the coming year of eleven Pundred millions more. ‘The bill was then passed, 93 to 3. Ty THE Hovse— Mr. Morris reported a bil! to repeal the fagi- tive slave laws. The opposition side of the House resisted action upon the bill at this time; £0, by way ef compromise, the bill was made the special order for next Monday.
