They can be converted into money at any moment, and the holder will have the benefit of the interest. The Funded Debt of the United States on which interest is payable in gold, on the 3d day of March, 1864, was $763.965,000. The interest on this debt for the coming fiscal year will be $45,997 126, while the customs revenue in gold for the current fiscal year, ending June 30th, 1864, has been so far at the rate of over $10,000,000 per annum, It will be seen that even the present gold reve- nues of the Government are largely in excess of the wants of the Treasury for the payment of gold interest, while the recent increase of the tariff will doubtless raise the annual reeeipts from cus- toms on the same amount of importations, to $150,000,000 per annum.
