GRAHAM, Coachmaker, my 21-81" oa wand 477 Bighth strest, INTERESTING PARTICULARS OF GRANT’S ADVANCE, [Special Correepondence of Phila. Inquirer.) HEADQUARTERS Sxconp Corps, May 21-5 p.m.—This corps has made a march to-day of about twenty miles—an advance further into theenemy’s country. We left the vicinity of Spottsylvania at 12 o’clock last night, marched east by south to the Bowling Green road, crossing the Richmond and Potomac railroad & short distance north of Guiney’s Station, ad- vanced south to Bowling Green, along the tel- egraph road, then southwest some two miles to Milford Station. have crossed the Mattapony river within a quarter of a mile of that Point, and are now in a good position eouthwest of that stream. As I write I hear hundreds of &xes vigorously plied, chopping timber for breastworks, within half a mile to the front, and as many spades are working just as busily, though more silently. Milford Station is equidistant trom Freder- icksburg and Hanover Junction; 18 miles from each, and 40 miles from Richmond. Up to last night it has been used by the rebel army as its depot of supplies, but being apprised of our adven: in this direction, they succeeded in re- moving nearly everything away before our arrival. How they ever gota hint of our in- tentions is a profound mystery. Probably not a dozen men in the Army of the Potomac knew our destination, yet it is stated‘ that the enemy were fully informed 21 hours in ad- vance, It will be seen by what I have already stated, that we are between the rebel army and the railroad, which has formed its line of commnu- nication with Richmond, and at the same time hold a commanding position on its right flank. Although skirmishing commenced seyeral miles before reaching Bowling Green, the en- emy made no serious resistance until our cavalry arrived in the vicinity of Milford Sta- tion. Here Col. Hammond found a strong line of infantry in his way, formed along a road running obliquely to the one on which he was advaneing, their left occupying & hill near the junction of the two roads, and fortified on the top with rifle-pits. He at first charged them with his men, except a skirmish line, mounted, but found their position was too strong. He then sent back to Gen. Torbert for reinforce- ments, and pending their arrival dismounted his men and formed in line. The 16th Pennsyl. vania, from Colonel Chamberlain’s command, soon found him, and were also dismounted. Our troops then advanced, making their heayiest attack on the enemy’s right, and after some Seple fighting, driving them back from the road along which they had gaken position, Our left, driving the enemy before it, was then Swung around, and charged the hill, where the enemy were entrenched, from the Tear, thus rendering the rifle pits of no avail for their protection. Sosuddenly was this manwuvre effected that we were upon them before they suspected our approach from that quarter, and sixty-six of them were captured. The troops engaged on the part of the enemy were a por- tion of Pickett’s division, and Were sent here yesterday to guard the depot. Moriey Hovusg, NEAR GUINEY’s STATIon, May 2!—9 p. m—A hasty dispatch, scrawled upon the’sward before the house at half past four p. m., and sent off the moment after, has announced to you the great march of to-day. Your correspondeat with the 2d corps will send you the full details of its progress, and it only remains for me to give you some general idea of the movement in hand. Look at the map, note the relative positions of Spottsylyania Court House and of Guiney and Bowling Green, and th3 mind can at once perceive the wonderful military genius that has flanked the rebel py. and advanced far to the rear of its posi.ion in the little space of twenty-four hours. It is the magnificent moye- ment over the Rapidan repeated ona grander scale and under more difficult circumstances. There the enemy was over a river and beyond a chain of mountains; to-day he was within a hundred yards of our picket line. in aa open country, ‘with roads everer” did not touch the telegraph road, and to-night we have leaped arrace hah we pind. the xailcund, and planted ourselves firmly on tne old great stage road from Fredericksburg to Richmond, that is east of and near parallel with the railroad. What next! Lee cannot fight us here. His next chance is at Hanover Court House, on the line of the North Anna, which has always been considered formidable. Bat Lee beware. Itis now diamond cutdiamond. Grant, aided by such subalterns as Meade, Hancock and Burnside, has been more than his match so far, and will be to the end. A word es to the country. The scenery around Gniney is beautiful. From Motley’s house, Which stands on an elevation halfa mile trom the station, the whole yalley of the Upper Mattapony is @ map unrolled atour feet. Far off on its outskirts is a belt of timber skirting the sluggish Mattapony, and beyond st again rises the circle of hilJs,on which the sturdy boys of the 5th corps lie dreaming of home: Motryey House, May 22, 10% a. m—The headquarters of the 9th corps were established bere at daylight. The corps i3 about leaving and will proceed to-day to Bethel Church, 7 miles beyond. The 6th corps is now passing down the road in the direction taken by the Sth corps Inst evening. The affair last night indicated by the can- nonading was the holding in check of the ene- my’s stromg rear guard by Burnside and Wright, which was handsomely done. The headquarters of the army are still here, but will move in the course of the day. From all present indications, we will haye no battle this side of the line of the North Anna river. HEADQUARTERS SECOND Corrs, May 22,6 A M.—Up to this hour all is quiet, Warren has crossed the Po River at Guinea’s Bridge, on his way to form connection on our right. If Lee has not already fallen back from Spotsylvania we shall soon, if successful in completing our lines, be 2 position to cut him off from Richmond. k This corpsis already within a few miles of his direct line of march towards Hanover Junction. We can cut off his supplies from this point at pleasure, and compe) him to fight us on ground of ourown selecting. Itis just possible, however, that he may have taken the alarm yesterday, and already given us the slip by a timely retreat with the main body of his army. CONGRESSIONAL. SSS In THE SENATE yesterday— On motion of Mr. Fessenden, the House bill to provide internal revenue to support the Government, to pay the interest on the public debt, and for other purposes, was taken up. Considerable time was spent in discussing the amendments preposed by the Senate’s Finance Committee in regard to United States asses- sors, their duties and y, which were gen- erally agreed to, including the provision al- lowing assessors as high as $4, per annum, and assistant assessors four dollars per day when employed in cajlecting lists and making valuations. In THE HOUSE yesterday— Mr. Patterson, of N. H., reported a bill to werd vir? ie Newavoyss ome in the Dis- trict of Colum! Mr. Brooks, of N. ¥., wished to know what was the use of such somes if newspapers were to be suppressed. In that case there would be no news! 5 Mr. Kernan:said it would be idle to protect newsboys if we donot protect citizens whose rights have been violated. If it was not in order for him to express ‘his views in this grand inquest of the nation, he desired thatan express. section should be added to the bill, rovidirg thatthe press shall not’be mee eet by the arbit ‘will ofan execative officer. Mr: Morrill rai the question that the free- dom of the press was not pertinent to the bill; ani The Speaker sustained the point. He said the bill merely provided for an act of incorpo- ration of & home fer newsboys, and such re- marks were no more appropriate than toa land or @ pension bill. Mr. Brooks moved to recommit the bill, with instructions that its provisions be made to apply to the sewabore of New York: Provided, it shall not Ke lawfu Stig sapien velit other person in authority, suppress ni = papert military forde, thus depriving ne ws- f their employ ment. “The Speaker sdid he amendment was clearly out of order. ‘ Mr. Brooks modified Bis proposition, in- structing the committee to reporta new section that no news] ¢ shall be suppressed in ‘Without due process of law. ; The Speaker, — aero poate stint rons, who bad gieided to Mr. Kernan, resumed ‘Ne figor. Mr. Brooks sald’ that the should be the Capitol prison, and he would Dave their education such as would thorough- Vy fit them for champions of human liberty. © would have them read Magna not only in the English, but in the original Latin. He would have them thoroughly trained to the principles of that charter, extorted by the Barons trom King John, at Runeymeade, and which declares that no man shall be defrauded of bis liberty, except by due process of law. He would have this declaration ted on the Cepitol walls in Latin, Saxon, lish, and olber languages, that it might be read and un. derstood by all men. Mr. Brooks remarked : If this is not in or- cer, I have nothing more tosay. He then took bis seat. The dill for the incorporation of the News- boys’ Home in the District of Columbia was then passed, under the operation of the pre- vious question. A Prorgzr Resvxe—On Friday morning last, as David Paul Brown, Esq., ois to ad- dress the jury on behalf of the defendant, in the case of the Commonwealth vs Keracher, charged with murder, he perceived that two of the jurymen bad their legs stretched out tela Righer than their bodies, — their ir oots resting upon the railing that separ- ated-the jury box from the Bar. Mr. Brown, before commencing his speech, addressing thesetwo jurymen, said: ‘‘Take down your feet, sirs. came here to speak to men’s héeade, or their hearts, and not to their feet;and will submit to no such indignity in a court of jus- tice, when the life of an individual is at stake, for decency is a part of the law.” The feet, of course, dropped at once, and an logy was made. This was a merited rebuke from the counsel, and a bold one, too, as it was directed to two of the very body who were to decide the prisoner’s fate.— Philadelphia Press, THR For OF THE PROCLAMATION.—The arrest of Howard, the forger of the pretended proclamation of the President, continues taex- cite much ciscussion in New York and Brook- lyn. _The New Yerk Sun says: The frieads of Howard are very much dis- treesed at the dis, he has brought upon himself by a reckless use of the talent he pose sessed.
