It is supposed the enemy has been retreating for the last twenty-four hours to tale @ posi- tion on the North Anna river. ’ Nothing but straggling parties of afew guer- rillas were found all day. The Inquirer's courier left a point two mike south of Guinney’s Station at two p.m. Everything then was progressing finely, ana the army was in the best of spirits. Grant is now in the open country, clear of the “Wilderness,” and where ha can get at the enemy in something like a fair field; andthe whole army {eels the most unbounded cona- dence in the result of a fight under these im~ proved circumstances. This sudden retreat of Lee gives color to th» belief expressed by Gen. Butler that Lee has ‘sent a portion of his army to crash bim sud- denly with an overwhelming ‘orce, a piece of strategy, however, in which he has been foiled through the stubborn resistance made by But- Jer’s army. It would appear that the rebel attack on our right on Wednesday was a feint to cover this retrograde movement. , Bowling Green, the point occupied by Han. cock in the adwance in pursnit of Lee, is the capital of Caroline county, on the read from Richmond to Fredericksburg, le twenty miles from Fredeficksburg and forty from Rich- mond, It contain, or did contain before the war, some 400 inhabitants.
