Gradations in Meurning. The “Kound Table” this week, has an ad- Mirable article on the subject of moursing habdiliments, especially those by which lady mourners express the ditferent degrees of their sorrow, dof which means of proclaiming ours our sex are deprived. The writer says, ine fine vein of bitter irony :— « We men bavye no such cpponsuety to ex- press a sense of our bereavement in an elaborate way. Our tailors uniform us in funereal black, our chepeliers encircle our hats with crape, and ! where anend. A widower cannot advertise the freshness or staleness of his sad condition by his clothes. Iris impossible to jadge of the state of his feelings from his hue. In tact the tast« of mankind in this country runs so gene: aily to black that it is only now and then tha! iction finds one of usin motley. In nine ses out of ten, all we require to put us in mourning is & weed round the beaver. Cannot this be remedied ! Why should there not be sorrow stores for the stupider sex! Is there any just reason why lonely men should not be put through a course of French grays | and puces ard lavenders as well as women? Do not our griefs become fine by degrees and beautifully less in the same way as those of the queens of creation? Certainly they do, Then et the progress of the sequence be made mani- festin our coars and vests and pantaloons. Let us huve the gradations of fading melan- choly denoted by our hat cinctures, so that the public, and more particular the angelic portion of it, m&y understand how we are grtung slong with our tribulations. How can the fair creatures know, under present cir- cumstances, whether an unfortunate widower bas just been plunged into inconsolability, or is emerging from it in lively and approach- able frame of mind? Who cansay how many, many male mourners of nearly a year’s stand- Dg may have missed eligible offers this blessed | leap yerr, on account of the forbidding char- acter of their sable snits and love-repulsing bat bards? We submit tosociety the propriety of a sliding-scale of funereal habiliments for men. Nothing can succeed in this world with- ont advertising. net even grief. Who will take a store on Broadway and open a dry. goors tribulation shop for bereaved masculini- ty An Attempt Against Atlanta. {From the Raleigh Progress.) The Dalton correspondent of the Atlanta Register avers that the programme of the Abe- Hition Government of the pending spring cam- paign has been fixed beyond doubt, and, ac- cording to all mdicttions, will oren with a gfand demonstration in an attempt against Atlanta. The movement of troops on the part of the enemy, and all his preparations, point plainly in that direction. It is known that the concentration of the enemy's forces in the direction of Chattanooga is greater than on the Potomac, and there 1s more activity there than at the latter point. The foregoing is exactly in accordance with our views, expressed in this paper 2 few days ago. Whatever appearance of attack upon Lee, or on North Carolina, the enemy may keep up. we cannot get rid ofthe impression or pre- sentiment that “On to Atlanta” is now his watchword. We know our opinion in such matter is worth but little, nor won!d we obtrude iton any one presumptuonsly, but still eur Cpinion ts that buta feint, the “On to Atlanta” is a reality.
