HeapgvarTEers ARMY OF THE POTOMAC, May 16.—Atter ten days successive fighting the Army of -he Potomac was yesterday allowed to rest and recruit for arother strargle, Some chauges in the position of the troops omeither sice were made during the day, and on the eee ieut skirmish between the pickets oc- curred. A coiumn of the enemy vas seen moving to- ward our right fiank, for the parpose, it is sup- posed, of attacking our trains; but a portion of the second corps wns sent to check them, sud their object was defeated. It is almost impossible to discover the posi- ticn of the enemy, as they keep in and behind the woods, their pickets only being observable. All the prisoners taken during the late bat- tles haye been sent hence. Notwithstanding so large a number were conveyed through a hostile country, not one escaped, owing to the etrict vigilance of the 68th Penusylyania, Col. winslow, who acted as their guard to Belle jain. Gur wounded at Belle Plain have suffered terribly on the road. Many had to ride in army wagons, on accountof there not being a sufficient number of ambulances, and the roads being in ashecking condition, they were, ef course, much bruised on the trip, many dy- ing on the way. Fredericksburg is a general hospital, and full ot wounded, but they are now being well cared for; the Sanitary Com. ission finally getting their supplies down to . Some thirty prisoners came in during the night. A day or two since guerrillas on the road to Belle Plain seized several ambulances with wounded, took horses and wagons, and left occupants in the road. A dozen of the party Were etterwards captured. HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF THE Porowac, May i7.—Yesterday was very quiet along the lines, excepting some skirmishing in the center by Burnside’s men, and a few shells thrown by Birney’s division, which, however, elicited noreply. The rebel sharpshooters, however, held their ground. During this time a division of the 2d corps was sent to retake possession of two hospitals oi ours, which were abandoned on Saturday laet with about 500 wounded in them. The rebel cavairy had been there and helped themeelyes to such articles as they wanted, and had calcniated on takingall the occupants away to-day as prisoners: but we were just ia time, and wagons being sent all were brought -away, with tents, supplies, etc. A surgeon let in charge of hospitals at Wil- derness battle field reports the capture of S00 of our wounded there, and their transportation to the rebel lines, from which ,he escaped. He says our wounded are suffering for everything, even bread, and that no surgeons are there to dress their wounds. The roads are improving and movements of importance may soon be expected. « DEPARTMENT OF THE SOUTH. Threatened by the Rebels, St. Lovis, May 17.—Vicksburg advices to the 10th say thatthe expedition under Gen'l McArthur, sent out by Gen’l Slocum, had captured Yazoo City with but little resist. ance. A messenger en route to Kirby Smith's army was captured with dispatches from Gen'l Lee to Adjutant General Uooper, saying Grant's army had been repuised and driven back to- ward Washington. Raids by the rebels on the plantations stiil continne, and the most fiendish brutalities are committed. Even infants were carried otf and kilied to terrify the women. i Gen. Slocum’s raiders produced great con- sternation among the traders. The specula- tors’ stores have been closed, and commerce with the enemy stopped. Many corrupting practices have been corrected.
