THE EVENING STAR. | w.D. WALLACH, Bait WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY.........--;-c00eeeMAY¥ 17, 1864. and Proprietor. WP READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE BEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GEAPHIO AND OTHER MATTER. EXTRA FROM THE FRONT. The official bulletins given elsewhere show that there have been no military operations of importance carried on for the jast three days, | mainly on account of the condition of the roads. | ‘The skirmishing on Saturdayand Sunday morn- ing was for choice of position on our left center. On Saturday the enemy, by a sudden dash, got | & position from which it was determined to | dislodge them, and in the eveningacalumn, Jed by Gen. Ayres’ brigade, was sent to regain j it, which was done without serious loss, and a proper force put in position to hold the ground gained. The roads sre described as in # frightfuicon- dition, delaying the progress of the reinforce- | ments going to Grant, very few of whom had reached him up to yesterday morning, but by this time they must have joined him in sufficient mumbers te form & very handsome addition to his army. It is believed that some reinforcements are resching Lee, but notin any degree commen- furate with his needs, and there 1s no doubt | from the weakness shown by the Confederates At other points in the Confederacy where they @re being pressed that pretty nearly the ex- tent of its resoure?s in the way of fighting men had been hurried up to Lee's suppor’ previous to Grant’s advance, leaving very dittle reeerve for him. | Advices received from the Army of the Po- | tomac to yesterday morning speak of the ex- treme difficulty of discovering the exact posi- tion of the enemy, who are very cautious and ave aysiled themselves of the cover of dense ‘woods to conceal their operations—their pick- ets Only beingseen. We further learn that none of the prisoners } in passing from the front to Belle Plain made their escape—so efficiently were they guarded from headquarters. Sunday was spent as a day of rest through- Out the army, but a small skirmish took place before its close. ! itis evident, from all accounts, that each party is narrowly watching the other to ascer- tain tre position and probable movements of its opponent. GLORIOUS NEWS FROM SHERMAN He hasa Brilliant Victory and Cap- tures 1.6¢6 Prisoners! He is in Full Pursuit of the Rebels in the directien of Atlanta! Le A dispatch was received atGen. Green, amounting to not Jess than 2,500 men. i I waited till they got into easy shellingrange, | and opened upon them & heavy fire of shrap- nel and canister. Therebels fought with un- ususl pertinacity for over an hour, delivering the heaviest and most concentr: ted fire of mus- | ketry that I have ever witnessed. They finally broke in great confusion, leaving ihe ground covered with the dead and wound- ec, muskets, knapsacks, &c., for many yards tvom the boat. Having received orders tp join you without delay, I regretted that I could not give the battle ficid the inspection I desired From the statements of the wounded, and the appearance of the fleld, the loss of the ene- Imy could not have been less than 200. THE THIRD AND FOURTH DIVISIONS, SEC- OND CORPS, A report baying got circulation that these two divisions did not come up to the mark in the recent fights, it is due to them that the mat- ter should be set right. In the second day’s fight they were 4n the Brock road, and had thrown up two lines of works, when Long- street's entire corps was massed in their front, and at 4 p,m. commenced a furious assault on the firstline. Our men, after expending their ammunition, were forced to fall back on the second line. Here they stood their ground mantully, and before dark the rebels were beaten off with great loss, we losing heavily also. Some tnauthorized person, seeing the first line fall back, carried word to Gen. Grant that both of these divisions had broken, and orders were about being issued to march them tothe rear; but at this trme a message from |} Gen.
