WASHINGTON, D. C., MONDAY, MAY 9. 1864. Beauregard to his trumps on the James, and » that one of the decisive battles of the war is N2. 3,493. (From the Extra Star of yesterday.] MOST IMPORTANT AND EN. COURAGING FROM THE FRONT! DISPATCHES FROM THE MEDI- CAL DIRECTOR AND CHIEF QUARTERMASTER! VERY HEAVY -FIGHTING! Our Wounded, Numbering from 6,000 to 8,000, on the Road to Washington ! THE ENEMY FOILED IN HIS DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO CRUSH OUR ARMY WHILE MOVING! LEE RETIRING!! GRANT PREPARING FOR AN AD- VANCE !! Chief Quartermaster Ingalls Makes a Requisition for a Large Quantity of Grain for that Purpose! ! A GLORIOUS PROSPECT AHEAD. Lee, exhausted by his tremendous efforts to break our centre must give way in a demo- ralized condition!! + The only official information from the Army of the Potomac is derived from despatches ot the Medical Director and Chief Quartermaster to their respective bureaus. The wounded, numbering from six to eight thousand, have been sent from the battle fleld to Rappahannock Station, thence to be for- warded to Washington. A portion of them have arrived at Rappa- hannock. The Chief Quartermaster has made a requisition for grain for the animals. This imports an advance by General Grant. Gen. Ingalls says, « We have fought two days. The enemy are said to be retiring.” There seems to be no doubt that, aithough nothing decisive has yet occurred, the enemy has been foiled in his confident expectation of driving General Grant back before his opera- tions could be fully developed, and that Lee has been compelled to give way. The tactics of the enemy have uniformly been to strike his heaviest blow at the outset, and to this their success has always been ow- ing. This has now failed. During the present wan, as in other instances, & bafited and retiring army soon becomes dig- organized. No reason is perceived why this result will not happen to Lee. {From second edition of Extra Star.} FURTHER PARTICULARS. Desperate Fighting on Thurs- day and Friday. Grant Believed to be Pushing Forward. IMPORTANT FROM THE WEST. Sherman at Tunnell Hill Push- ing Forward. McPherson operating against the enemy’s communications with Rome, Georgia, Reports received from the front up to 11 o’clock on Saturday morning say that there had been two days severe fighting—on Thurs- day and Friday—and that it was believed that the enemy were retreating. Our wounded were being sent to the rear, showing that we had lost no ground in the fighting. It is believed our forces were press. ing forward. Nothing further has been heard from Major General Butler. Reports from Chattanooga, dated at 5 o’clock yesterday (Saturday) afternoon, say that Sher- man was then at Tunnel Hill, the enemy at Buzzard’s Roost Gap, and our General, McPhereon, was operating against theenemy’s communications with Rome throngh Vilanau and Resaeca. THE SITUATION. Everything looks encouraging this 6th day of May, 1964, There seems to be no doubt that Lee is at this moment nearer an irreparable defeat than he has been since the rebellion commenced, ‘Were’ we at liberty to mention. facts within our: knowledge, we think we could demon- sttate that Lee-has real occasion to dread | the strategy of our military operations as well as the Vigor ‘with Which they are pressed. We pelieve that Je® Davis finds’ to-day in reality what has about, that “it thunders all around”! We believe that not only is Lee most sorely pressed in frent, but that Butler is putting being fought by Sherman to-day at Buzsard Roost Gap, to which place. the enemy retired, as a stronger-posttion than Tunnel Hill, on be- ing pressed by Sherman. All the indications Point to 8 glorious Union victory in this battle, As stated , it is believed that Leis falling back, bat we Judge thst in #0 doing he times ‘been talked | | a Will not fall beck apen Richmond, but apon Orange Court House, which has been his heag= quarters during the winter, and which is in direct communication with Gordensvilie, Charlotteevilie and Lynchburg, which podnis, and not Richmond, are his base of supplies. The line of attack by Lee in the fighting of Thursday and Friday nearly st right angles with Grant’s line of a@vance, and from the direction of Orange Oourt House iadieates that Lee made the latter point his base and headquarters. The forced march of a day and mght dy Burnside from Manassas, by whicD B¢ get his troops to Grant’s support on Tharsday night, issaid to have surpassed even Ms brilliant forced marches in East Tennessee, by which) he surprised the enemy there. Provably Lee has by this time had occasion to feel their'pre- sence with Grant. Incidents, Casualties Reported, &e, General Hays killed. Generals Getty and Gregg, Colonel Hays, General Owens reported wounded. Gen. Hancock is reported to have receivea a elight wound while rallying bis men to ree sist A. P. Hill's oneet. Two of Burnsid¢’s siaff are reported Kiliea while carrying despatches. The gallant General Hays, whose death ie reported, was a graduate of West Point, and was at the Academy at the same time with Gen. Grant. He served with great credit du- ring the Mexican war, and for personal gai- lantry 8nd daring courage he was one of the most distinguished officers in the United States service. He belonged originally to the 34 corps, and, on the late reorganization of the army, he was attached to Hancock’s corps. He held the position which bore the brant of Gen. A. P. Hill’s attack, and fell at the Bead of his command, just at the moment that support bad been ordered forward to assist him, It is reported that Maj. Gen. Sheridan, (new- Ty appointed in command of the cavalry of the army,) pitched into the rebel General Stuart on Friday, giving him a sharp taste of his fight- ing quality, and scattering = rebel cavalry like the wind. On Thureday vigorous saat ‘were made by the rebels to break Gen. Meade’s line and sep- arate his corps. For that purpose the rebel forces were massed, and, under the command ot Gen. Longstreet, endeavored to penetrate between the center, held by Gen. - Warren, at the Wilderness, and the right wing, command. ed by Gen. Sedgwick, and resting on Germania, Ford. Failing in this, Hill's corps, ander com- mand of Gen. A. P. Hill, the strongest in the rebel army, was further strengthened by a portion of Ewell’s corps, tried to break through between Warren’s center and our left wing, commanded by Gen. Hancock; but this effort also proved abortive. The New York cavalry were pushed forward towards Orange Qourt House, but were forced back with considera. ble loss. On Thursday night the position of the Army of the Potomac remained as it had been during the day : Warren in the center, at tbe Wilderness; Hancock at Chancellorsyilles on the left; and Sedgwick on the left, extend- ing to Germania Ford. A despatch from Gen. Butler, received Sat- urday evening, at the War Department, etates that the movement from Fortress Monroe had thus far successfully accomplished everything that bad been expected. The whole force had successfully landed, and was busily engaged ' in securing its position against any casualty that might happen, and a reconnoissance had been pushed forward to Petersburg. Movement up the James River. Fortress Monror,May 6.—Having obtained permission trom Captain Peifer. A.D. 0. to Gen. Butler, to publish anything that has fally transpired here in regard to the highly import- ant movements in this direction, I transmit the following particulars: On Tuesday night, the $d instant, about one- half of the large fleet of transports that have been lying in the Roads for some time were or- dered to Yorktown, and commenced embarking troops. On Wednesday the rest of the fleet ‘Went up and took the remainder of the on board, and came backhere. The wPole fieet then proceeded up James river, passing herg last night. The movement was conducted with the greatest secresy and with all possible quiet. ness. The fleet advanced up the James river, preceded by the army gunboats, under com. mand of Gen. Graham. During to-day and last night a ye: ful landing has been effectea, cn Arcs had been met with up io 4 o’clock thie at which time the Thomas Powell left with dispatches, in charge of Captain Peiffer. No casualty had occurred beyond the killing of a colored soldier and the injury of two others, by being caught between two boats. Our movement was evidently a complete surprise. At last advices our forces were being rapidly landed and pushed forward. We have landed at Wilson’s Wharf, Fort Powhattan Landing, Bermuda Hundred, aboye the Appomattox, &c. Our monitors and gunboats ara all over the bar at Harrison’s Landing, and above City Point. The operations of the fieet have been characterized by great energy and success. _ ————— iF ate (MAIN) L" STEELERS NG gE POT To obtain any of tiene letters. he applicant must call for ** advertised ‘sttare,” give a date of thia ligt and pa, cp tench ‘advertiain ie. they will not called for within one mon! ey sent to the Dead Letter Office. eee Place the postage stamp on the pepertight-hand corner, and leave space between the and direction for post-marking without interlering with the hated © A request for the return of # letter to the Writer, if ueclaimed within thirty days or less, written or rinted with the writer’s mame, post office, and Btate, across the left-hand end of envelope ‘on the be complied with at the u pre- ei side, will be aid rate of postage, payable when the nates ia delivered to the iter. ti EADIEE IST.
