Agitation. The Raleigh Confederate says: Agitation must stop. There must be no more appesis tor convention—openly or by secret petition. The movement has inspired distrust and slarm—anziety and apprehension—has already Jed to violence and disorder, and is pregnant ‘with more. Men must cease to speak in private, and the press cease to publish denunciations of the Government which induce the soldiers to abandon our cause. If they are talse hearted enough to sympathize with the foe, they mast jock the secret in the most hidden recésses of their soul. Folly bas long enough had sway— it must descend and give pluee to better and wiser sentiment and action. Bust TIME TO Paint HovuseEs.—Experiments have indicated that paint on surfaces exposed to the sun will be much more durable if applied in autumn or spring, than if pat on during hot weather. In cool weather it dries slowly, forms a hard, glossy coat, tough like glass, while if applied in warm weather. the oil strikes into the wood, leaving the paint so dry that it is rapidly beaten off by rains. | PICKLE For BeEr.—For one hundred pounds of beef take three quarts of salt, half a pound of brown sugar, and two ounces of ground biack pepper; mix in water enough to cover the meat; let it boil; take off the scum: when cool, pour it over the meat.
