For the sake of better information the Board may have be- fore them the poll-list of ihe next preceding general election, to be returned to the proper keeper at the close of the cession, and all such entries shall be meade with ink. The Board shall have power, and it shall be their daty.to question every person presenting himself for Tegistration touching his residence and other qualifications as an elector of the ward, and it shall be the duty of the applicant to maka truthful answers to all such questions; and the Foard may, for the more perfect examina- tion of the snplicant, swearand employ an in- terpreter, truly and impartially to interpret all such questions and answers. The penalty for making false answers is a fine of not mere than one hundred nor less than five dollars, and imprisonment in the county jail not more than thirty nor less than five days. Section 5th enacts that the name of no person but an actual resident of the at the time of the registration, and entitled under this act, if remaining such resident, to vote at tne next charter election, shail beentered in the register. Neither the board, nor any membeg thereof, shall write or enter in the register the name of any pereon, nor suffer him to writeor enter his name therein, whom they know or believe are not residents or quahfi If any personenter bis name in a ward where he knows he is not @ resident, he shall pay a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $100, and be imprisoned not Jess than ten nor more than ninety days in the county jail. Section ‘th provides that at least two weeks previous to the commencement of any such eeesion, the board, at the expense of the city, shall cause a notice thereof to be printed and published in one cr more newspapers pablish- ed in the city of Washington, designating the place of holding the same; and shall alsocause the eame notice to be printed in handbill form and posted up in at least ten conspicuous placesin each ward, which bandbill shall also contain @ true copy of the list of names then appesring in the register for the ward.
