Bowers at Ford’s Tkeater—Seidom in the history of theatricals in this city have we been called | ppon to chronicle a success more complete in emotional effect, or one better deserved by ar- tistic beauty. The play itselfis a most pathetic picture of woman’s frailty, and of the redeem- ing power of maternal Jove, and has revived ihe public’s interest in Mrs. Wood’s touching story. Editor Evening Star : mits There is nothing in the Re; " of “Alex. R. Shepherd, Counci/man Tb: ard,” worthy of the least notice, being entirely an unsuccess- ful attempt at wit and humor, and only a per- f-ct specimen of Billingsgateand slang. The wetkness of his position, and his inabitity t> maintain the false assertions made in his oficial capacity as to the leakage of gas, &c., is ac- knowledged by the jact that he has wholly abardoned the questions atissne, and descended (if he can descend) to mere valgar personalities, showing, throughout his whole contemptible « Reply,” the venom of the serpent without its power to injure. My object is not to bandy epithets, but to show that Mr. Shepherd’s as- set tions relative to the Gas Light Company are wholly and malicionsly false, and that Mr. Emmart’s statement (to the effect that «the cecempany bas not repaired one of J. W. Thom 9- son Co’s jobs”) is further from the truth, if possible, than Mr. Shepherd's original decla- rations. I therefore append an official note from the superintendent of the company, who is specially charged with repairing all leaky mains andservices. His statement can be sub- stantiated by the testimony of at least fifty men, who have beeu empioyed from time to time in stopping thece yery leaks. J.¥. Brown. Wasuinoton, Feb. 5 J. F. Brown, Esq., Secretary, &¢.: Sir: In reply to your inqairy of this date, as to the characier of the work done by J. W. Thompson & Co. for us, I have to say that the Tovins ard services were laid im the worst possi- blemanner, and that instead of «not having re- aired one Of their jobs,” as asserted by Mr. mmert, I have stopped more than fix’ hundred lecks, (many of them of the worst kind,) in the work cone by that firm. By keeping men thus employed nearly all the time for the last two- and-a-balf years, I have got their work toler- ably tight, but the largest part of them leak still, (about seven per cent. in all.) and those which give me most trouble are in the mains and ser- vices laid by J. W. Thompson & Co. for this company. lam, &c., 1361. O. O.
