Christia’ Commt PRESIDENT LINCOLN PRES) AND RECEIVED WITH GREAT ENTHUSIASM. ‘The second anniversary of this patriotic or- | ganization was held last night in the hall of the House of Representatives, and was largely attended, the gulleries being crowded. The | floor of the House, occupied by those who had | tickets of invitation, was full, but not crowded. | The enthusiasm manifested must have satisfied such members of the Commission as were pres- ent that their Christian and patriotic labors are appreciated. Among those present were many | Officers of the Army and soldiers, Cabinet of- ficers, a crowd of distinguished Senators and Representatives; and the Chief Magistrate him- self honored the assembly by his presence, and evinced a deep interest in the detailed accounts of the operations and work of the members of the Commission upon the battle-field and else- ‘where. At 7}s o'clock the meeting was called toorder, and Vice President Hamlin took the chair. The band attached to the headquarters of this department occupied the reporters gallery, and discoursed patriotic music in very fine style. The exercises were opened with prayer by Rey. Frederick T. Brown, of the Georgetown Presbyterian Church, after which Vice Presi- dent Hamlin made a tew opening remarks, in which he said he could conceive of no object of more importance than that which brought the asscmbly together, and he aie a glowing wibute to the soldiers in the field, and to the brave men, who, by acts of mercy, had allevi- ated their sufferings in hospitals and on the battle field. He concluded by introducing Mr. G. H. Stuart, the President of the Commission, who was received with applause Mr. Stuart said the Commission had sprung from the Young Men’s Christian’ Associations of the country, and its objects were to carry home comforts to the homeless and Gospel Messages to the Christless. When it was pro- osed to organize the Commission, the first Ketter of encouragement was from Abraham Lincoln, {ap plause,} and the next was trom the Secretary of War amd officers of the army. ‘The Government not only recognized them, but Tailroads and steamboats lent them their aid. ‘The ladies too had done—— Piece the speaker was interrupted by au enthusiastic outburst of applause, clapping of hands, and waving of handkerchiefs, and the cause was socn ex- plained by the Sppssrance through thé door on the right hand of the Speaker’s chair of the tall form of President Lincoln, who, unattended, ‘walked quietly forwart and took a seat among the audience. The audience simultaneously rose to their feet and for a moment or more continued to welcome*Mr. Lincoln by applause and waving of handkerchiefs. Mr. Stuart had not at first observed the President, and no little merriment was created when he announced that he supposed the applause was elicited by is allusion to the Indies.) Mr. Stuart then continued, and read @ state- meat of the work of ate Roaugission Hees the it year, from which it appears that the Browne received in cash, donations of stores, books, railroad and telegraph facilities, d services of delegates, amounted to $916,537.65; cash expended in purchase of stores, publica- tions, expenses of delegates, &v., $265,211-2+: balance on hand at Central Office, ist January, 4864, $43,547.41; Christian ministers and laymen commissioned to minister to men on battle- fields and camps, hospitals and shi; during the year, 1,207: copies ot Scriptures distributed, 465,715; hymn and psalm ks distributed, 371,959; knapsack books distributed, 1,254,591; Hibi rary books distributed. 39,713; zines and pamphiets distributed, 120,14 religious newspapers distributed, 2,931,169; pages. of tracts di buted, 11,976,722; silent comforters, &c., distributed, 33,285. Mr. Stuart then spoke of the great work of the Commission, and the aid it had ever re- ceived from the President aud others, and he ‘believed the President would see the rebellion crushed, if not in this, then in hisnext Admin- istration, (applause.) But he was not going to talk politics, and in conclusion, he would ever pray G God to bless the Chief Magistrate and all nts of Government. ees Pg band then struck up the + Star Spangled Banner,” after which Revs: RK. J. Parvin and | Geo. J. Mingins gave detailed accounts of the operations of the delegates of the Commis- sion in the field and among the soldiers every- where. Both these gentlemen have seen mach | service in the cause, and during their remarks, pocket-handkerchiets were freely used to wipe | away the tears drawn from the audience, us scenes were depicted of the terrible sufferings of the soldier after a battie. Manv complimen- tary allusions were made to the President, and each allusion elicited warm applause. Mr. Parvin believed, from actual obserya- tion, that there was no army 80 well eared for by the government and people as was the army ot the United States. Mr. Mingins asserted that the soldiers were -mecessable to religions influence in the prea b and he believed there were more m truly converted there than there would be at home. He paid a poor compliment to Washington, however. when he asserted that there was more wickedness among the soldiers who came to and were in this city, than there was throughout the whole army in the field. Mr. Colfax, Speaker of the House of Repre- sentatives, was then introduced, and after an effective speech, closed with an appeal to the audience to aid the canse of the Commission. He referred to President Lincolu as one whose name would occupy a high po-ition on the roll of fame, for he had, by daring {» take the re- sponsibility after the tall of Sumter, saved to to this nation its Capital; and be-ide the name of the President would be found the names of | those, who, by deeds of mercy, had alleviated | ~the miseries of the battle fleid. Mr. Stuart here read a letter from a lady of Ohio, now residing in England, who had in: closed to the President a tive-pound note for the benefit of the Commission and the soldiers, and he then announced that a collection would be taken up. While the baskets were being passed around the band Played & lively air, and from the appearance of the baskets there is no doubt that a large sum was realized. Gen. Martindale was then introduced and made a very interesting speech; after which letters were read from Attorney General Hates, Gen. Casey, Gen. Patrick and others, regretting their inability to attend. Senator Sherman, of Ohio, was just here recognized and called upon tora speech; but he excused bimself by saying that he came merely to listen, but he fully approved ot the objects of the Commission. Chaplain McCabe, of Ohio, was then intro- duced, and sang a song entitled the « Battle Jiymn of the Republic,” which was composed find sung in Libbey prison iinmediately after the batue of Gettys! Mr. McCabe being at that time a prisoner. The words are eung to the familiar :une, « Jobn Brown's body lies mouldering in the grave,” &c., sad the chorus is the same; and the whole audience rose to their feet and joined in singing, the President befhg one of the first torise. At its conclusion it was loudly applauded, and the President was 80 pleased With it that he requested a re; ition, which request was PS after Col. Powell, of the ist Virginia (Union) regiment had given a short account of aflairs in Libbey, (trom which he has just been released.) Col. Powell, however, announced that he was on le, end notgel exchanged. &nd therefore his topgne was somewhat tied. He, however, told engaen to fully confirm all the pects Ss thes reached us of the horrors of prison and of the ill-treatment to a neeg Fed leral soldiers are subjected.
