see i THE EVENING STAR. ny MRS. GEAUCHAMP’S VENGEANCE. —— Onarter I.—Srrtine For A PorRTRAIT. “The head a lcefle more this way,” said | Charles Rackit, slightly pointing with hismahl- | stick ; “not quite somuch. There, that’s the thing. Now look towards me.” “So” asked the docile andepretty Mrs. | Beauchamp, whose portrait was slowly taking arming,” snid ihe painte 7 « Oharming,” 9&1 © painter, sweeping a | bold line down the hair. Nothing cowld be prettier than the young widow, whose feftures he was intently perus- ing, while her affianced second husband was wearily perusing the Times, trying to extract mental nutriment from offers of desirable famii- ly mansions, self-acting boot-jacks, and arti- cles ot common use and uncommon rames; occasionally interested oy the appeal to a run- away husband who was earnestly implored to retarn to his diseonsolate family and duns; but feeling, on the whole, @ languid interest in the ning ox columns of information. Mr. Smythe Briggs, the gentleman in question, was an orunment to the Corn Exchange, but his views of art were not lofty, and his interestin this portrait of his « intended” simply showed itself-in @ not unreasonable impatience to see it finisned. In vain his friend tried to rouse “a nobler enthusiasm.” It wouldn’tdo. Briggs was not enthusiastic—and he wanted to = | married. Until the portrait was finished, marriage was not totake place. Mrs. Beau. champ had said so ; and what Mrs. Beauchamp said, she meant. = | Now I don'tknow whether you agree with Eriggs—(I do)—that sitting by, while a portrai is being taken, is one of the least fixttering and | exhilarating of positions. You are so obyious- iy playing dammy. lt is not your noble fea- ures that are being contemplated; and if you are at all jealously disposed, it is not very | pleasant to sit by and see another man scrnti- mising the features which you regard as pecu- liarly yourown. Suppose you not tobeofa | jealous disposition, the situation then becomes | fatiguing. You feel that you are outside the | real business and interest of the scene. You are “ playing propriety,” and perhaps both the others with you away. Briggs was not jealous, but.he was bored.— He had made some novel observations respect- ing the weather and foreign affairs, sprinkled with personal details as to purchases he had made, or intended to make; he had read the Times ; and he bad for the fifteenth time look- ed at ail the oi) paintings, sketches, casts, and odds and ende, in the atelier; and now there seemed nothing else to do, until Rackitsnggest- - thathe should step up stairs and sce his sister. «Is your sister at home?” said Briggs, eager- Jy catching atthe offered relief. “Then [ll step up. Meanwhile, old fellow do beas quick asyoucan. Let it bea speaking likeness, but never mind about chiaroscuro, and all that, you know.” -‘He’s dreadfnily bored,” laughed the widow, as Briggs left the atelier. ««Is he jealous 7” + Jealous ? Of whom ?”” « Why—your head a little more this way—he doesn’t seem to like my having to look at you sointently. Asif aman with eyes tosee, asunl two appreciate—. You have moved again! If it has been wearisome to him to be present at | these sittings—delicious sittings towhy doesn’ he keepaway ! ldon’twanthim. His presence irritates me—it stifles my emotions. 4 «« 1s portrait paintingthen so very agitating!” asked ihe widow, with an arch smile, and pre- tending notto uncerstand him. I thought it ‘Was quite mechanical.” * So it is, with other sitters.” ‘There was a pauce. He telt that he had said , too much, Fo he began vigorously painting. Charles Rackit was not an R. He wore very long | hair, and teokextremely long credit. Bilis he | considered to be “ proofs of the egotism of our 1 age.” He was generally eloquent on ** ourage,” King as if he were intimately acquainted with other ages ; andcomplained loudly of the ** prosaisms of the day,’ which robbed life of its romance. In an unguarded moment I once asked_him whe'her romance was really indis- pensable to existance | A look was his reply. He liked me, though he said I was © utterly respectable ;” and 1 liked him, though 1 coulda have wished to eee him less unsettled, as I once remarked. . « Uncetiled,’ be replied, “itis true, I am an- | fettled ; so is the eagle!” itwas not clear to me how the habits of eagles could serye as exemplars to portrait | painters. | “The polype, he continued, dashing the | long hair tack from his f: the polype is settied. Go and admire it. There it is, fixed | forever to its bit of rock, passive, amid the no- ble tumult of life. As I knew nothing of the domestic economy of polypes, and had but the dimmest percep- tion cf wbat bearing they conld have on the present question, beyond ths very obvious pro- position that he, Rackit, was nota polype, I was sient. He fancied he had answered me. Having given this glimpse of the painter, Jet | us return to his atelier, and the scene which is | being acted there. He is still painting silently, | and feeling every moment hts embarrassment increase ; but obser ving that Mrs. Keauchamp seems quite calm, he resumes the interrupted conversation. . «+E said that it was mechanical work, ingen- eral, nting the poze of ordinary people. But the soul has its sympathies—its finer ia- stincts.” . _Notdistinetly comprehending the fall signi- ficance of the proposition, Mrs. Beauchamp merely smiled, and said, «Oh, yes.” He quitted the easel, and said, as heapproach- ed her, +‘ your shoulder is a little too ad vanced: your hand should be here.” He took her hand ; but instead of placing it in the eminently desirable position, he held it lingering in his «* There !” shesaid, with anarch smile, which quickly broke out into a ringing laugh. Rackit felt ridiculous, so letting the hand fall, he returned to his easel. «« What an original you are!” said the langh- ing, wicked widow. «« Would you have me astone when a god- degs sits to me ?” * Don't be ly hetostcal, plesee,” she said; «I would rather you would be serions than throw Lempriere’s Dictionary at my head.”” «1 am serious,” he replied. “People think me gay and careless.
