Investigation by a Military Commission— Profitable Steamboat Charters. Norroik, Va., Jan. 4.—The military com- mission, of which Gen. I. J. Wister is presi- dent, has been in session during the past week in this city. The case of J. M. Hunt, late su- perinterdent of vessels at Fort Monroe, is being tried, and the developments are exceedingly interesting. Among the points elicited are the payment of #8,000 of fees to Senator Hale by Hunt to get him out of the Old Capitol prison. ‘To-@ay, Capt. Cone, of the steamer John A. Warner, was on the stand, and testified that the boat was worth about 305,00) when she firet went inio Government service, and that at the rate of her charter she had earned $173,500 up to dute; that the Government had supplied her with coal, and that her ranning expenses were from $1,009 to $1,200 per month, which were defrayed by goods sold on board and by the profits on meals and berths. She belongs to the Delaware River Stexsmboat Company, of which John Price Wetherill, of Philadeiphia, is president, and Andrew M. Andersoa, Wm. T. Allen, Willet Paxson and Sam’! Harlan, ir., are diyectors. Uapfain Cove swears that her first charter was made with John Tucker, late Assistant Secretary of War, and the second with (uar- teymaster Meigs. The prosecuticn has overhanted other fat jots in ihe steamboat line. As the evidence stands thus far it appears as if there had been & ring of contractors which interloeks with one at Baitimore. Among others there is the case of the stesmer West End, an old boat which was offered at New York at $5,500, but was cbartered to the Government trom March, Iré2, to October, 1663, at 226,500 per annum. Legisjature of Ohio. Cincinnati, Jan. 5.—The Ohio Legistaturea | organized yesterday at Columbns. J. R. Hub- bell was elected Speaker of the House and Wiiliam E. Davis Clerk of the Senate. Govy- erncr Tod’s message is very brief. The finan- cial affairs of the Stete were never in a better condition. Thr public debt has been reduced six hundred and seventy-six thousand dollars The militia system adopted by the Legislature last winter has proved a success. He recom- mends that banking corporations now existing unger State authority be given all reasonable facilities for closing their business. He ate tributes the escape of John Morgan to negii- gence arising from a misunderstanding between the c.viland military officers at the peniten. tiary as to their respective duties. 2 calls attention to the bravery and vallantry of our ecidiers in the field, and says, +« Although the wicked rebellion still continnes, we can Jastly claim for Obio a full performance of duty in the effort to crush it. The number of troops raised since the ‘heginning ot the war is two hundred thousand six hundred and seyenty- one. Se From Panama. PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 5.—The steamer Ocean Quren, from Aspinwall on the 27th, with a quarter of a million of treasnre, has arrived. Cinciunati, Jan. 4.-General Rosecrans’ official report of the battle of Ghickamauga is published to-day, together with the reply of General Thomas L. Wood toa portion of it, General Rosecrans attributes the gaps opened on the line of battle through which the rebels poured, deciding the fortunes of the day ad- versely to us, to Wood’s erroneous conclusion that obeying the order close up on General Reynolds, he had to withdtaw trom the line and pass to the rear of General Brannan. Wood, in reply, shows that Branaan was in line between his and Beynolas's divisions, and that he conld not obey the order tosupport the latter without withdiawing and passing in the rear of Brannan’s division, and that the order being peremptory and urgent, he had no dis- cretionary power, and simply obeyed orders. The point seems to be clearly made against Rosecrans. Penns@lvania Legislature. HARRISBURG, Jan. 5.—The Senate was occu- pied to-day in balloting for Speaker. Eizht ballots were taken, but all resulted in a tie, the remaining Senator who has the casting vote being a prisoner of war at Richmond. Mr. Lowry of Centre county, proposed that a committee be delegated to request Jeff. Davis to release him in order to organize the Penn- sylvania Legislature, but as an amendment ‘was substituted to make Mr. Lowry the com- mittee, the motion was withdrawn. As this tie vote promises to continue in the Senate, the prospect of the organization of the Legislature and reception of the message of Goy. Uurtin remains uncertain. Both Houses haye ad- journed till to-morfow. From St. Domingo. New York, Jan. 5.—S:. Domingo advices to the Turk’s Island Standard represent the Span- iarcs are making but little progress. The town of Samana had been plundered by the Spaniards, and the Wesleyan mission- house and chapel burned. The merchants of St. Thomas have closed all accounts with Porto Rico, Hayti aad Cuba, and will not transact any further business with those places except for cash. FROM THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY, Disaster to Cole's aryland Cavairy— Fight 1m Loudon County. Harrer’s Ferry, Va, Jan. 4.—;Corres- pondence Baltimore American. }—It is not often you bave been called upon to to Colje’s Maryland cavairy, ding: they have been almost consiantly in the saddle for nearly three years, and are eniirely igno- rant as to the meaning of « winter quarters.” On Wednesday, however, the 30th uit, 3 de- tachment of seventy-five men, composed of @ proportionate number fromeach of the four companies constituting the battal proveed- ed on 8 two days’ scout, under the command of Capt. A. M. Hunter, of Company 0. The detachment met with iutle impediment in its march until Friday, January !,about one A. m., when near Rectortown, on the border of Loudoun and Fauquirr cotnties, it suddenly ‘ncountered a large force, of trom ftve to seven hundred rebel cavalry, supposed to be a portion ot General Rosser’s brigade. Our boys fougat gsliantiy agamet such overwhelming numbers until fifty seven out of the seventy-five were either captured or killed, The remaining eighteen made their way in eafety to cump. Captain Hunter, I regret to say, is a prisoner im ibe hands of the enemy. Several of those who escaped fonnd their feet froven when they reached camp. Qne poor fellow, named William Brown, of Capt. Frank Gallagher's company, got his boots filled with water in crossing & stream, and when he attempted to pull them off found his feet and enkles encased in ice! The bvots had to be cat trem his feet. Rectortown, the scene of this ocenrrence, {3 about forty wiles from Harperjs Ferry, anda Jocality proverbial for roving “bands of guer- rilles and other rebel cavalry. The mil: sagacity that could suggest such an expeditien, with a handful of men, so tar into the enemy’s lines, without the hope of succer or suppor: ia case they were overpowered, may well be tioned. Besides, the men had buta f previourly come off a fitteen days? sco the upper Shenandoah Valley, where they had been co-operating with Gen. Averill io his great raid on the Tennessee and Virgin road. While this disaster was being enacied on the east side of the Blue hidge, the balance of the baitahon, with Major Cole himself in command, was in the Shenandoah Valley, ready to meet the advance of the rebels in their threatened raid on the Baltimore and Ohio rail- road. P. &.—Since the above was written a dispatch has been received from Capt, Hunter announ- cing bis escape from the rebels and his eafe ar- rival at Point of Rocks. LOCAL NEWS.
