THE EVENING STAR. ; OUR COUNTRY. ‘We muit forgot all feelings save the one; qs mast eget passion save our purpose ; fe must behold no object save our couutry, And only leok ond ‘as beantiful Bo that the sacrifice ascend to Heaven And draw down freedom on her evermore. They never fail who dia pies great cause ; the block may soak their gore; eir heads may sodden in the sun, their limbs Be strung to ates and castie walls ; walks abroad. Though years Bilapse snd others share as dark 9 doom.” Fhe bat angment the deep and sweeping thoughts ich overpower all others, and conduct ‘The world at last to freedom,— Byron, Who CAN DETECT SMALL-POx IN iTS EARLY Sracx t—Variola, or small- pox, besides being @ contagious eruptive fever, is one of the must Joatheome and offensive diseases thatis known fmthe long calendar of afflictions peculiar to the human family. It is not our purpose to speak of the causes of smatl-pox, nor to give its various symptoms, nor yet its treatment; although, to make a full and lasting impression om the minds of physicians of the secret which we are about to divulge, itis proper to refer to the standard works. It is admitted by most of all authors that small-pox is inaugurated by chills, succeeded | by febrile reaction, much like remittent fever: nausea, thirst, &c. In a few honrs the head ‘becomes affected with perhaps stupor or drow- sinecs, or 8 wakeful and restless feeling. Bat these and other 6 beg ted belong to several febrile diseases. In from twelve to twenty- four hours, unbearable pains approach the back, and extend down the limbs, and prevade | the wholeframe. The physician may now sus- pect the approach of smali-pox, but has noth- ing yet to base an opinion. On the third day | the eruption appears, giving partial relief to the patient. The attention of the physician is now called to this eruption, and it is expected that he willat once decide. He looks at his patient, bul if he is 2 wise man he guards his | tongue ; for, if the eruptions he sparse or scat- tered, it may be a case of chicken-pox; again, if the eruptions be thickly set, with scarlet ap- pearance, he hesitates, because it may be mea~ sles. Here the doctor is in a tight place, be- cause all the old Iadies and everybody else are on tiptoe ready to flee, from the ‘wrath to come,” if he says small-por. Now we offer this secret to the profession—so soon as the eruptions appear, and by pressure | ‘with the point of the finger may distinctly be | felt the small, hord substance, precisely as if a | small, fine shot, had been placed under the cati- | ele of the skin. This peculiar appearance be- | longs to no other eruptive disease. We have applied the term secret here; for, whilst it is and has been known to afew physicians, it is net mentioned in any of the standard authori- ties, nor does the writer claim the credit of the | discovery. After this, all works upon practice will add this unfailing diagnostic symptom.— | Eclectic Journal. | ee TOTS | | | | The Very Latest by Telegraph Hrangvasreas Sax7a Ciaus, To WM. F.
