A large crowd was in attendance, not only of colored peopia, (male and female,) but of members of the Unicn League; while a few ladies were sprinkied here and there. In the early part of the eveving, the whites as they camein took the seats on the right hand side of the hall, and the colored peopie those on the left; but long before the meeting commenced the races began to mix considerably, and before the meeting closed the audience was pretty miscellaneously intermingled. Eight o'clock arrived, and no speakers ap- pearing, Mr. J.S. Brown, the superintendent of the hall, announced that they would be there an _a few moments. The audience waited awhile longer, and then by s ping evinced their impatience, whe T. H.C. Hinton (colored) arose, and announced that the speakers would be present ina few moments. One of them, he said, was waiting on # lady, and sie liad a great many “chicken fixen to get on, which probably o¢casioned , Laughter.) Lo lis were moaade for Hinton, but he an- nounced that ier awhile” ne would say something. The colored side then struck up the hymn, “My country ‘tis of thee,” &c.. but was inter- rupted by stamping und clapping of bands, which announced the arrival of the speakers. After order had been restored, Mr. Hinton introduced the orator of the evening as follows: Ladies and gentiemen, please giye me your attention. Longhtio havesait fellow. citiz-ns— that is a large pill to swallow, but Brother Jonaihan has said it rust be so. QOharles Lenox Remond, the bright plank m the anti- sisvery platform and champion of hur Tights, will now address the meeting. [A plause.j Mr. Remond, who is a colored lawyer of Saiem, “Mass. of good education and fair, natural abilities, arose, and after some pre- liminsry remarks, said he had always be- lieved in the great moral truth that God was the r of us all, and that we were all itheut reference to accidents or in- black hair, and he trusted the time was tast approaching when we shall not have a politi- cal standard by which a man‘s work is to be measured, nor a local position by which a ™an’s virtces are to be Known, and when American citigens shall be known and honored according to their merits, and without regard to the Station in which they move. Station is accidental, like the colored man’s complexioa— ne merit or demerit in the individaal that has it. The war, Meretore, has not been with black men, but with God and his creatures. Hence the sad mistake. A man might as well cail upon a leopard to chaaze his spots as to call upon the speaker to change his color. But this couid not be so long as Democrats shall be sean siaye- hoiders, while Republicans and professing Chri: sshould so beseen. He trusted that the day was not far coming whena man shoutd not be disgraced because he demanded justic+. ‘The colored man had answered the call of his country in tke hour of its trial, and therefore he hoped that those who ared this peril and sacrificed their lives should be rewarded by the right of political suffrage, equal with the whitemun. The eyil of slavery was wide- gpread as our wide extended country, and the speaker betieved that when the black man was made a manin eyerys of the word, slavery would meetits death blow, and not till then. And he believed this wi occur, for he be- 3 God indited the prayer of tue humblest an aker then sat down, amid much ap- plause; aud after the audieace had sung the “Siar-spangled Banner,” Mr. Thos.
