These paintings, too, are beautiful in the ex. are exhibited 1 such a manner as to always please the large audiences inattend- ance. ———$—— ANeTHER MURDER—Dennis Shanahan Kilted | by ¢ Tamster—Abdout one clock yesterday morning some mounted soldiers arrested Jere- miah Henrick, a teamster, who was charged with the murder of Dennis Shanahan, at the house one poet & few moments before the arrest enrick was loc! x Wael sialon locked up in the Fourth | Coroner Woodward held an inquest yester- day in view of the body, at the house on Firet street, between K and L streets north. Taere were several witnesses who testified that Hen- k and deceased had a quarrel on Satu rday bt about an old stove that Henrick had par- | hased from a woman. Henrick threatened to xill Shanahan: and Shanahan left the place this quarrel occurred. 5. Shanahan (wife of the deceased) testified t abont 12 o’clock Henrick came to her house and walked up and down in front of the door, calling her husband and daring him out Shavahan was about undressing to go to bed, | but went to the door, and witness with him, and stood in the door by his sid-. Henrick -Is that you, Shanahan! Deceased seid “Yes.” Henrick then asked, « Are you going to tollow that stove” Deceased replied, * I will see about that to-morrow.” Henrich n said, “Come out here, yon s—n of a b—h, M see if you follow it.” Witness told her husband to come in and not talk to the blackguard. Just then Henrick rushed up and plunged a knife into her husband. He ex- claimed, + lamstabbed!’ Deceased got to the hed, aud told witness to stop the blood. She opened his clothes, and the blood was pouring from ® wound about three inches below the | deft nipple and near the middle of the breast He died in five or ten minutes. Witness fo!- lowed Henrick, and called the soldiers to ar- Tost ‘he murderer, Which they did after a short chase Upon searching Henrick, no weapon was fourd. But next morning, Roundsman Kelly. the Fourth Ward, followed the trail of k, when he tried to escape. and found > & straight, sharp-pointed dagger, about 7 inches in length, sharp on one side, th a very thick back. It bas a dark hone lie, on Which is the name, “J. A. Tart,” ed on the metal plate: on the other side, 7 is scratched -in the bone. The blade was bloody when found by officer Kelly. Henrick denied that he ever owned the knife: but & witness has since been found who iden- tified the scabbard, found with it, as one that Henrick had three months ago The jury decided that Shanahan came to his death from a wound inflicted with a knife in the hands of Henrick. Thns passed a pleasant evening at Wnion Chapel, and of ithe happy ones none more fortunate than the pastor in these times of high prices. ————— AN UNFORTUNATE “GAMBOLIER.”—On Sat- urday night Olrick Gray, colored servant at Baker’s Cavairy Camp, came into the city and ‘went to the house of dall Smith, (colored,) corner of Second and A streets north, where he got to “gamboling,” and succeeded in win- Ding quite a pile, but the losers grabbed it, and he came ont minus. Not liking that kind ef irea'ment, he went to camp, got a revolver and threatened to sboot Smith. Officer Mills was near by, and arrested Gray and took him to | the station, and Sergeant Milstead, with Offi- | cers Meredith, Pierce, Wallingsford, Sprague and Mills, repaired tothe house, where they arrested. Smith and nine other men, who were iaken to the station. Yesterday morning Jus- tice Ferguson examined the ¢ase, and fined Gray 220.55 for carrying a pistol, Smith $1058 for gambling and disorderly conduct, and dis- missed the other: — CoLoreD PICKPOcKET.—Saturday morning, Mr. ©. Hiese and a sergeant of a military com- pany sat down in Hiese’s stable office, on | Sixth street, near the canal, and fell asleep. ‘When the sergeant awoke he roused his part- ner, and inquired, “Chris! have you got my bresstpin !” Hiese looked for his watch, and missed it, and supposing his friend was jokjng, replied, “Look here! give me my watch! Finding the matter no joke, he looked about his stable, and finally suspected Robert Dor- sey, acolored employee. Dorsey was arrested by Officer Donn, and a pawn ticket for the ‘watch obtained, and the watch recovered, but the breastpin was not found.
