The band of the 4th New Hampshire.isinat. tendance bightly and discourses excellent music. selina TRUSTERS O¥ PUBLIC HOOLS.—The first meeiing of the Board of School Trustees re- cently appointed by the Mayor was held yes- terday evening. The room now occupied by the Board is the ove formerly occupied by the Board of Common CVeuncil, in the second story, west wing of the City Hall. The room has been fitted up expressly for the Board, by order of the Councils, under the direction of the Mayor, and everything is arranged in a con- venient manner. A table runs the length of the room; at the north end of which is the Presi- dent's seat, and at the opposite end the seats for the Secre! of the Board and the reporters of the press. Chairs are ranged along the sides of the table for the members, and each member has for his own use a private drawer. Th Teporters are also thus accommodated. The present Board is constituted as follows First District—J. O. Wilson, (member of iast Board,) J. S. Brown vice R. T. Morsell, an- pointed Secretary, and J. P. Tustin vice Win. Wlison, declined. Second District—M. H. Miller, W. J. Rhees, and O.C. Wight. All old members. (Mr. Wight was traneferred from the Third District.) Third District—F. S. Walsh, CW. Day cold members,) and R. B. Ferguson vice O. Wight, transferred. Fourth District—J. B. Elis, J. E. Holmead, (cia members,) and W. J. Muriazgh vice J. T. Jassell, declined. Mr. R. T. H Falconer, for the positions of teacher, were received and referred. The reports of teachers for the October were reported complete. Mr. Rhees, from the committee on rules and month of regulations, recommended the adoption ot the following amendments to the existing rules, viz Article 15. te be amended by striking out the clause w! requires the Committee on vocal music to make annual examinations of pupils im that branch of study. Rule 62, to b> so amended as te require the approval of twomembers of the sub-Board of | ‘Trustees, instead of one, to turnish books to the pupils of indigent parents or guardians. Rule 60 is to be amended by striking ont “x0t exceeding one for every ten pupils.” The committee also recommend that all monthly reports of teachers be sent to the Sec- retary instead of to the sub-board. These amendments were laid over till next meetng, under the rules. On the subject of roll books, Mr. Rhees also reported the following. toappiy to tho gram- | mar and intermediate schools only, viz: Ist. The present roll books sre to be used. ud. Instead of writing the names of all the scholars in succession, they are to be writt-n by classes. Write the names of the classes, as grammar, &c., at the top of the page, andenter all names of pupils who study grammar under that head. So for geography and other studies. The teachers shall keep @ separate page, as at present, for the whole school for deportment and attendance. 3d. The first month the teachers are to write ue names of the pupils in the classes in alpha- vetical order, and afterwards in the order of merit as shown by the marks. 4th. A perfect or satisfactory recitation should be marked 4; @ good lesson or one ans wer missed mnarked 3; an imperfect or careless lesson marked 2; a total failure marked 1; absence at recitation marked with @ a@ppher; punctual at- tendance at either morning or afternoon session of school to be marked 4; tardiness less than half xn hour in the morning or less than ten minutes in the afternoon to be marked 3; tardiness of more than half an hourin the morning or ten | minutes in the afternoon to be marked 1; absence to be marked with acypher; good conduct to be marked 4; demerit marks to be deducted trom this standard, and if more than fourin one day to be deductea from the total for good condact during the month. At the end of every month the teachers (o add up the total number of mer- its and obtain theaverage. This course to com- muence on the firet day ef December. The recommendation of the Committee was ted. ‘A motion was adopted that when the. Board | adjourn itadjourn to Tuesday next to receive the annual report. Mr. Wight, from the committee appointed for that purpose, reported that they bad exam- ined the candidates for admission to the Colum. bia College, and had awarded the scholarship to Elbert Turner, a pupil of the First District Grammar school. The Chair stated that he had a communica- tion from the teachers of the Primary and Sec- ondary Public Schools, which demanded the serious attention of the Roard. It wasa peti- uou foran increase of wages, and while he thought the teachers were deserving of this in- crease yet the suoject was one which demand- ed mature deliberation. The communication referred to is as follows: To the Board of Trustecs of the Public Schools of the City of Washington, D. C.:—We, the under- signed, Teachers of the Primary and Second- j ary Public Schools of the city of Washington, D. C., feeling, in common with all classes of the community, the pressure of the times. in the advanced price of every article of con- sumption and clothing, and corresponding high rates of charge, for board, Jodging and fuel; and finding our present salaries insul- ficient to defray our expenses, respectfully re- quest the Board of Trustees of the Public Schools of the city of Washington, D.C., to take the matter into their serious consideration and to grant us such an increase of compensa- | tion fer our services as shall suit the altered state of the times and enable us to meet our unavoidable outlay. .
