The race was for $150, best three in five to harness. Lady Champion, Lady Shannon, and Wild Rose were entered; and the race was won by Lady Champion. In the first heat the animals went off together, keeping close companionship through the heat. Lady Champion had the lead and won the heat in 2.46%. In the second heat the horses got an even start, and Champion again came in atiead, in 2423. In the third heat Lady Shannon lead, with Champion next—Wild Rose in the rear. The latter made a bad break on the back stretch, and’not recovering her loss, she was distanced. Shannon won the heat in 2.41. The fourth heat was won by Shannon, who, although hard pressed by Champion, held to the score, winning; 2:41. About five o'clock in the afternoon, a large portion of the bank on the west side of the foot of Seventh street fell while a number of colored laborers were engaged in loading sand fora ; Mr. Perry, and completely buried one of the men, named Arthur, together with his cart. He was with some difficulty dug out, but was found to be dead, his neck having been broken eand his body mangled. The cart was broken by the fall of the bank, and one horse was in- jured.
