A matince to-morrow afternoon, | oe | CONSUMERS PROTRBUTIVE ASROUIATION.—A | Special meeting ef this association was heli last eventng at the Union League rooms, to hear the report of the business agent. Th» na- | sociation was called t) order by its president | (Also business agent), Sephen Prentiss, Esq, | who reported that he had visited Harrisburg, | Philadelphia, and other points, to learn the state of the market, more particulariy with reference to coal. At the same time proposals were solicited personally aud by adveriising, and several propositions were received, among which was one froin a party in Pennsylvania, who proposed to furniah the association with | coal at their doors at $9 per ton, The same , party also proposed furnishing flour, butter | and other provisions, xnd freighting the same | on their Own curs, through to Washington. | ‘There bad been difficalty in obtaining a cen- | tral and suitable location, but they had the promise of a yuitabin place, and until it was obtained they would useastore room on Loui iana avenue. At this place they can furnish members with potatoes, flour, &c., and are | now ready to receive orders. From 70 to 10 tons of coal was hourly expected, which, on { its arrival, would be delivered to fill orders left with the secretary. After the reading of this report, several speeches were made. One speaker stated that An arrangement had been made with a4 gentle- men of large experience and capital, whe came to this city on business, by which he stocks a ‘warehouse, and gives us the privilege of select- ing trom hisstock Whatever he buys we do not want, he has the privilege of selling at his own profit. The speaker had been asked, “What has be- come of your Assceciation! Heard it had gone up!” It had not gone up. It had some 75 or £0 members, and they can purchase, at asaving of their stovk, contributions every month, pro vided they take but one share. It had been slow work, but he had not been disheartened; | and while some of his colleagues had not | always thought so, he believed that they would | finally succeed. True, when he sevs one class | of clerks who have already purcha-ed at 4 dis- tance to adv¢ntage—another who, by house- Tent and borrbwing, have nota cent left them at pay-day, and yeta third who are standing off, waiting to see if the project will succeed, be felt a little discouraged, but_he had no fears of the ultimate result. In answer to a question the Chair announced that the present officers were provisional, and that regular officers would be elected on the last Monday night in December, to which time the meeting adjourned, provided no special buainess shall render a meeting in the interim necessary. The meeting was not as well attended as pre- vious ones. -Among those present we noticed one or two ladies. From an officer of the association we under- stand that 100 tons of coal haye been sub- scribed for. — Lavy Court.—Yesterday the Court met at the City Hall. The chair laid before the court the written opinion of the Attorney ,R. R. Crawford, on the subject of fines imposed by Justices of the peace for forcible entry and de- tainer. [The law provides that such fines throughout the District shall be paid over to ‘the Levy Court, but heretofore such fines have mot been paid over, and the attorney after re- viewing the law states that if such fines are not hereafter paid over, steps sheuld be taken to recover them.] The opinion was referred to the finance committee. Mr. Bowen, from the Finance Committee to whom was referred the resolution instructing the Attorney to take legal steps to obtain pos- session of the Washington and Rock ville Turn- pike, made a report in writing accompanied by the tollowing resolution: Resolved, That the Attorney for this court be -instructed to examine the charter of the Wash- ington and Reckville Turnpike company, and if in his opinion the said company have violated their charter, the said attorney be requested to report all the facts to this court for instructions as to what steps shall be taken as required by the act of March, 1863. The resolution was adopted Le bere Mr. Sargent offered a resolution providing for the appointment of a committee to codify the laws ef the District, which is the duty of the court to enforce, and shall be commani- cated to Mr. R.S. Coxe, to be submitted to Congress, which was adopted. Messra. Sar- gent and Brown were appointed the committ: Mr. Sargent offered a resolution which was adopted, directing that the road from North Capitol street to Glenwood, be called hereafter «Lincoln Avenue,” and directing that this be set out on side of said road. t Dr. Nichols read a communication from the school trustees of the Seventh District in rela- tion to the school house in Uniontown. The trustees built a school heuse in Uniontown. exjyecting that it would be paid for by the county, but the commiesioners refused, on the ground thatit was not in a central location. The trustees nowask to be refunded theamount expended, and promise to erecta house atsuch Point as the commissioners may approve. The communication was referred. Two applications were received for tavern licences for taverns at the new race course, near the Insane Asylum. A number of small appropriations were made for county roads, Sg GUERRILLAS ON THE ROCKVILLE RoAD—On Saturday night, as the citizens of Washington | ~and Georgetown were returning from ibe great Union meeting at Rockyille, a squad of young- ish men of our neighboring city, inspired by tae devil doubtless, undertook to play of 2 pract a} joke on tour solid citizens of Georgetown, who were returning At a sober pace in a back. ‘When about three miles from Tenallyiown, | the jokers (who were pretiy well mounted) drew up their horses by the roa’, (the night being somewhat dark,) and when tbe hick‘ comtaining the old codgers came lumbering { along, the equestrians made a charze upon it, | some of them ftiriug their pistols in the air, others seizing the horses by the head, and others again appearing at the carriage doors and demanding the surrender of Very much consternated were the tour ol: tlers;and #s for the driver, he made a single leap trom bis box, over the fence, and into the neighboring fleld, that fs said to have ex- ceeded by twenty-three inches the famous | jJeap made by George Washington in his | young days. The passengers were not quite so light on their pins, and cried «quar- ter,” with the exception of one, who managed to secrete himself long enough behind a bash to convey his watch and money to his boots. | There was naturally some cursing when those | four -olid men ot Georgetown discovered the | sell, nud Mr. C###*, we believe, decile that! somebody should get a thrashing, but eventa> ally thought better of it, and the whole party when lastseen was at ye Tenallytown Hotel, | singing «We won’t go home till morning, till daylight doth appear.” e should add that they were obliged to engineer the hack to town as best they might, for the driver made good his escape, and did) not turn up again until yesterday evening, wher he had some most wonderful experiences to tell of bis hair-breadth escapes from the «guevrillas.” Lest the correspondents of the northern papers should alarm the country ‘with Ais version of the story, we think it best to ventilate the facts. —_——s BarrisMaL OBREMONY.—On Sunday after- noon, the soremery of baptism by immersion ‘was performed at the E street Baptist Uharch, ip presence of & numerous company.
