Re BUBGET OF SOUTHERA MEWS. ao GLOOMY FALK OF THE ABUT SESE Fj THE RICHMOND PAPERS SAY ALL IS LOST FoR THE CUNFEDERATE CaUSR iP “CROAKING” ISNOTSfOPPED, — GEN. LEN ON THE BATTER OF GETTYSBURG, ai, airs The Richmond Seniinel of Saturday is greatly perturbed by the rebel telegraphic news thet Rosecrans was getting his supplies by wagon train from Stevenson. The Sentinel says: “Stevenson is at a point on the railroad from Chattanooga to Nashville, and thiriy-eiht miles from Chattanooga. It is near the north bank of the Tennessee river, but in the State of Alabama. Our investment of UChattanooz4 is AF 4 | tar less advanced than we had suppvsed, if | Rosecrans can maintain a wagon communica- tion be: ween this point and Chattauooza. We | Would not only have considered it precarious, but impossible; and we cannot douht but that it will yet be broken. If our cavalry are on the north side of the Tennes3°e, we supposy they will find speedy opportunity for a suc- | cessful blow. «But the truthis we Spaltbers fo relapse for the present into the wholesome skepticism with which we have been accustomed to re- ceive news from that quarter. Gin. Brags, in his official dispatch, told us that he brid two thousand wounded prisoners. The eloateey now tells us that he has five thonsand. Ths other siatements may be equally at random.” The Situation. {From the Atlasta Appeal.} We can report no new movements on tha | part of either army on the Tennessee, with certainty. On the contrary, the main bodies of both remain comparatively quiet, aid as they have been situated since Rosecrans retreated to Chattanooga. We have a report, apparentiy authentic, that in an address to his troops, ou Friday, Rosecrans assured them of his ability ana determination to not only hald the place, | but also to resume cffensive operations m a | short time. Rumors of cavalry movements on our part, looking to operations north of the river, are also current. Some of these “we ‘would like to be able to state were true. The most effectual way to disturb Rosy in his Juir, would be to get behind him, and this can be done if the attempt is not delayed. Delay may enable Federal reinforcements to reach th. necessary line of communication with Cha nooga, to such an extent that they will bo al to hold them; and if this is permitted, look out | for another tedious period of ditching, aud in- activity othe: wise. Gen. Lee in his official reportof the Pennsyl- vwania campaign gives as a reason for lis failure at Gettysburg that he could get no in- formation of the movements of the }ed+ral army. He says: «It bad not been intended to fight a general battle at such a distance from our base, unless attacked by the enemy; but finding ourselves unexpectedly contronted by the Federa it became a matter of difficulty to v through the mountains with our lar; As. At the same time, the country was unfavor- able for collecting supplies, while in the pré ence of the enemy’s main bedy, as he abled to restrain our foraging parties » pying the paseges of the mourtains with regular and local troops. A battle thus became, in a measure, unavoidable. successful issue of the engagement of the first day, and in view of the valuable resuits that ‘would ensue from the defeat of th» General Meade, it was thought adv renew the attack.” Of the last day’s battle he says: “Our troops succeeded in entering thy ad- vanced works of the enemy, and getting pos- session of some of his batteries; but our artil- lery having nearly expended its ammunition, the atlacking columns became exposed to the heavy fire of the numerous batteries near th: summit of the ridge, ana after a most deter- mined and gallant struggle were compelled to relingrish their advantage, and fall back to their original positions with severe loss.” * * «*Owing to the strength of the enemy's posi- tion and the reduction of our ammunition, a Terewal of the engagement could not be hazar- ded, and the difficulty of procuring supplies rendered it impossible to continue longer where we were. Such of the wounded as were in condition to be removed, and part of the arms collected on the field, were ordered to Williams- port. The army remained at Gettysburg do- ring the 4th. and at night began to retire by the road to Fairfield, carrying with it about 4,000 prisoners. Nearly 2,000 had previously been paroled, but the enemy’s numerous wounded that had fallen into our handsafter the first aud second days’ engagements were left behind.” The Ezaminer’s editorial says there is no fighting at Chattanooga. Loose telegrams from irresponsible parties would have had us be- lieve that Bragg had cut Rosecrans’ communi- cations, holding Lookout Mountain, &c. But from Bragg’s failure to resume the offensive, we fear there is too much trath in Rosecrans’ dispatch to his Government, that he heid an “impregnable position.” It is said Burnside has succeeded in reinforc- ing him, and we have no reason to doubt it. Burnside left Jones’ front long enough ago to have accomplished the march. Imboden has recently made a descent on the Baltimore and Ohio Raslroad, with the design of obstractin, the passage of re.nforcements to Rosecran: but, sad to say, he was a day teo late. The Sentinel depicts in feartul terms the hor- rible sufferings ofthe poor for food in Virginia, | nd especially the wives of rebel soldiers. The Sentinel of Saturday also charges upon those who are “indulging in discouraging re- marks” and assaiing Jeff. Davis, that they have depreciated the Confederate currency, and have produced “ much evil in the army it self, especially amongst the soldiers from a -certain locality [probably North Carolina—Epb. Star] where the croaking was most common.” The Sentinel goes on to urge that the Conteder- ate cause is lostit this croaking is not stopped.” .R@Why is Wyman, the Ventriloquist, likea Railway Engine + Becauee he can draw a crowd. Erastus Corning | hos resigned his seat a Representative in Con- grese, owing to iil health, LOCAL NEWS. —_— LIBeL Suit acainst OUNT GUROW- United States vs, Adam Gurows#i was cet for trial this morping in the Criminal Court, but wes further postponed until Friday morning next at 10 O'clock, when it will be taken up. This is a case of libel, the prosecuting wit- ness being William Hunter, Esq., Chief Clerk othe State Department. It is charged in the iuictment that Adam Gurowski, the accused, who wus atone time a clerktin the Department of State, did, in a book written by him, ana calied a « Diary from March, 1861, to November, $2," use the tcllowing language: “ Yesterday N—-—- dined with Lord Lyons, and during the dinner an anonymous note an- nounced to the Lord that the proclamation of the blockade is to be issued on to-morrow. N—,, who has a romantic turn, or rather who seeks for midi a 14% heurs, speculated what lacy would have thos violated a secret a’ Etat.” «TI rather think it comes from the Ministry, or, as they call it here, the Department. About two years ago, when the Central Americans were 80 teased and maltreated by the filibusters } and democratic administration, a Minister of one of these Central American Siates told me, in New York, that in a chief of the Depart. ments, or something the like, the Central Amer- te have a valuable friend, whe any time that trouble is brewing against them in the Depart- men ives them secret and anonymous notice of it. This friend may have transferred his Kinaness to England.” In another part of the book other alleged libellous language is used, as follows: “This chief clerk made Mr. Seward make un ae de clerc, and this at the start. Ae Lord yous took & great interest in the solution of the question of blockade, and as the chief clerk ‘was the oraculum in this question, these com- bined facts may give some clue to the anon- ymous advice sent to Lor@ Lyons and men- loned in the month of April.” Mr. Hunter was then, and is now, the Chief Clerk of the State Department, aud the Indict- ment alleges that the said Adam Gurowski did write the language above quoted for the pur- pose of inducing the belief that the sald Chief Clerks violated the confidence reposed in him &s an officer of the Government. wee CSE PROCEEDINGS AND FimpINcs of Counts MARTIAL.—Before a Court Martial, of which Col.
