In addition ‘to the reinforcements for the Army of the Cumberland, who:e arrival at Chattanooga we mention elsewhers in to-day’s Star, we may state that others are rapidly ap. proximating Chattanooga in large force, MARYLAND. jaryland at this moment offers more in- ‘ducements for the emigration of northern and foreign labor than any other State of the Union. The late very inrge exodus from that State of free negro and slave labor, for service in con- wection with oor military operations, has al- ready practically to a great extent denuded her of the labor with which agriculture was prosécuted every where thronghout her limits, except in the western counties and the imme- diate vicinity af Baltimore; and her landhold- ers stand ready to pay those liberally who will promptly and efficiently fill the vacan- cies. The soil, climate and other advantages which Maryland offers to settlers from the North and Europe in search 6f work and homes, are justnow unequalled. From three to five thousand such laborers and their fam- ) Mies could at this moment find constant profit- able and otherwise most advantageous employ- ment in the counties of Talbot and Dorchester alone, where @ white laboring population can live better, enjoying all the luxuries of ‘ae oysters, fish, game, é&c., 1or which those coun- ties are so justly celebrated, than anywhere else in the United States. It will be well for the Emigrant Aid Societies of New York to turn their attention at once to the many supe- rior advantages offered by these counties of | Maryland as homes for honest and efficient workmen, whether mechanics of farm hands, now daily reaching our shores from abroad. On Seventh street east the water covered the entire street, and several basements near I street south were overflowed, but no serious age was done. The water at the corner of I street washed out an ares of Mr. Geo. Miller, who is putting up a fine buildingthera, Seve-al streets in this section which are being repaired, were much damaged, large ruts being washed in them, and considerable extra lsbor will have to Le bestowed. ‘Tiber creek was much swoilen, and the Waters washed away one of the small fopt- bridges in the Botanical Gardens, and oyer- flow a Pgioha de of the grounds, Several horses and pigs were seen to wash down the strea:n. A large lot of sand and rubbish was wasued into the canal near Second : .reet. Tae water was very bigh along the river wharves, but we believe no damage was done. The storm was very severe, however, on the Potomac, and itis feared that some vessels have been damaged. Capt. Frank, of the King Phil- lip, who arrived up during the night with the schooner Wm. Bacon in tow, reports that it ‘was one of the most terrifie storms he ever »x- perienced in the river, the wind blowing a per- fect hurricane; in tact, he was obliged to heave to off Alexandria. Along the line of the Washington Branch railroad, toe, considerable damage was done, and whole fields of corn, &c.. were washed up, and the trains were somewhat delayed. The | train due here at six o'clock last evening did not arrive until ten o’clock, having been de- layed by the sand which had washed over tho track at Watson’s Switch to the depth of two feet. This had to be removed before the trains could proceed, and repairs had to be made on the trestle work at Hanover Switch, which it was feared was about being washedawayr, At Watson’s Switch the water run for over 4 mile to the depth of four teet, and at White Oak Bot- tom it was about three feet deep. At Jessup’s Cut, and other places along the line, the water run over the track to a considerable depth, but the company had a large force of men along the line of the road, who did everything “hat could be done; and by the timely preventative meas- ures taken, lo serious damage was done toany partof the road. Passengers who came in on this train speak in terms of great praise of the conductor, who made every exertion to get through as quickly as possible. Thenight was terribly dark and stormy, but the conductor caretoliy telt his way, and by dint of splendid management brought bis train in sately, as ahove stated. The train due here at ten p.m. last evening did not arrive until about four o’clock this morning; but the track is now in perfect order, and the trains are running with their accus- tomed regularity. : in the large hog pen near the Adams Express building, opposite the depot, there were about a hundred Bees: when the water in the Tiber commenced to rise, and soon the entire bottom was overilowed, and the hogs were swimming about in every direction, affording not a little amusement to the crowd collected to see the sight, notwithstanding the rain was talling in torren‘s at the time. The owner of the hogs, assisted by a number of persons, however, suc- ceeded in rescuing all from a watery grave. In this place, as well as about the buildings at the depot, a large number of rats were washed out, and itis thought that in this respect the rain did much good, for the rats have always been a pest there, and many were drowned, but those that escaped a watery death were doomed to die by other means, as Mr. Collins had a famous rat killing dog near by, who was assisted by other dogs, and large numbers were 8h in. In Georgetown, the heavy rain was rather advantageous to the canal, for it gaye ita fine stage of water. SS PoLick Rerorts—Second Precinct.—Fred’k Wilson, selling without license; $20.
