LOCAL NEWS AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Yorp’s TuxaTsR— Maggie Mitchell last night played “ Fanchon,” and for the first time during her presentengagement. Judging trom the mavner in which it was received, it bids 4air to have as good a run as it did during her former engagement. Certain it fe, that Maggie has lost none of her power, and she has almost attsined perfection in her delineation of the character of the “Cricket.” She is sustained bys good company. WashINGTON THsaTaR.—The it combi- pation, E. L. Davenport, J. W. Wallack and Sire Farren, performed last night to a fall house; 4nd although expectation ran high, on acconnt of the well-known dramatic ability of the trio, yet none were disappointed. The three stars were recei\ 4 with unbounded applause, and Mr. Grover’s fine company came in for a fair share. “Still Waters Run Deep” and «Your Life’s in Danger” will be performed to-night. CANTERBURY was again crowded last night, the announcement of the reappearance of Jalia Mortimer and Millie Fowler in the ««Gipsey’s sy" having proved an immense attraction. They will appear to-night again, together with the excellent Canterbury company. The new sensational drama, “The Yankee Tar,” will be performed, among other acts. Wyman continues to delight crowds at Odd Fellows’ Hall with his yentriloqguism and magic. His moving and speaking automata are yery eutertaining. To-morrow afternoon there will be a matinee. From the statement of Muse it appeared that Tolson and his wife rented rooms of Muse in his house near the contraband camp. Ke- cently, Tolson and his wife quareled, and she drove him away, but still occupied the rooms herself. Sunday, while Muse was sitting in a chair at home, Tolson, with another colored man, approached him, and remarked, “I pre- sume you have taken my wife fromme.” Muse answered that he had nothing to do with his wife, but had not completed the sentence when Tolson seized a heavy ivy wood cluband struck Muse, inflicting a very severe wound upon his skull. Tolson’s companion also aided in beat- ing Muse, and were only prevented trom in- flicting more serious damge by the interfe- sence of a colored man, who stepped up in goodtime. The assailants then concealed them- selves inthe contraband camp. The officers in charge were nctified, and at once took meas- ures to deliver the fugitives up to justice. Yes- terday morning, patrolman Voss, of the Second Ward, arrested Tolson at the Eleventh street wharf, where he was employed asa laborer, and took him to the Second Ward station, where he is held for a hearing when the other party is arrested. ee AGGRIBVED.— The aggrieved party in the Seventh Ward cowhiding case has, we hear, taken out & warrant against his assailant. It will be recollected that he received the casti- gation on the ground of indecent exposure of his person to highly respectable ladies, amongst them the wife of the party wielding the raw- hide, who is a clerk in the Land Office. The sufferer alleges that there is a big mistake about the matter altogether, and that he has received a.thundering licking due to some- body else’s shoulders. On the other side it is arty is un- and that in the special case re- » lady on being grossly insulted by the fellow in passing him, asked the first male friend she met to identify the individual (with- out mentioning what had transpired), which the gentleman to whom the request was pre- ferred proceeded at once todo. On reaching home the lady informed her husband of the facts in the case, and he at once set about pro- curing @ serviceable raw-hide, with the re- sults already stated. gs ASmAaLL Havt.—Yesterday, Patrick Grady, John Marzay, John McNulty and Daniel Shu- guroo, boys ranging from ten to twelve years of age, "were arrested for stealing a lot of common jewelry from the auction stand of OU. RB. L. Crown, Sixth street, near the canal. These little fellows are very troublesome to merchants and storekeepers, and also to the police, who have been frequently required to arrest them tor various petiy offenses. Patrolman Morris, of the Fourth Ward, arrested all of the littie fellows, ard recovered the jewelry, consisting of half a dozen lockets valued at $2.50 each, a lot of sleeve and shirt buttons, a pair of ear- rings, five pairs of gloves, &c. Other articles are missed from the stand by the owner . The Dboys were all sent to jail for a further hearing. 1tis a great pity that there is no place for the reform of such juvenile offenders. — Horsss INJURED.—On Saturday afternoon last, asa number of Goyernment teams were proceeding through L street to camp, the lead- horses of the foremost team became unmanage- able when near the corner of Fourth street, and deepite the efforts of the driver to prevent it, rushed headlong intoan excavation dug for the introduction of water-pipes. One of the horses fell on his back, and the other on top of him, in which position they remained for nearly two hours—the narrowness of the ditch making it difficult to extricate them. On getting them out the bottom horse, singularly enough, was found to be but slightly injured—the other, bowever, could not stand upon his feet, and it was thought his spine was broken. ge RELEASED ON PAROLE.—Last night Henry Henry (colored) was picked up drunk by the Fourth Ward police. This morning he had a hearing before Justice Giberson, when he said he was captured at Brandy Station and brought tothis city. At the Old Capitol, where he was lodged, he made himseif useful as a servant, and was paid for his services. He was allowed to go out of the prison, and made acquaintances, who gothim drunk. Justice Giberson ordered him to pay $1.58, and released him on parole to get the money. ———>—__- ARREST OF DEsBRTERS.—The detective corps of Capt. Henry A. Scheetz, the Provost Mar- shal of this District, have, during the past month, arrested upwards of four hundred de- serters in Washington, from the Army of the Potomac alone. This indicates a high degree of energy on the Fare of this force, and is cred- itable to Capt. Scheetz, who has charge of their operations.
