Price_Tuxse a Hew Rose: Vaeks ag Reinferced The St. Loule Republican, speaking of the facilities for reinforcing Rosecrans’ army from the Miesiseippi, says: “With Vicksburg as the starting point, there are, firet, three hundred and forty-seven miles of steamboating to Memphis, and next the gol- divers mustembark on the Memphis and Charies- ton railroad. The distance from Memphis to Chattanooga is three hundred and nine mules, but the road is not in operation throughout the whole length. Trains run regularly to Corinth rnd Iuka, the later one hundred and fifteen miles, but it is not unlikely that a large force may have opened the road as far as Decatar, some seyenty miles further east There should, too, by this time, be railroad commanication between Stevenson and Chat- tanooga, by means of the Nashvilleand Central Toad, the distance between. these two places being thirty-seven miles. But we can hardly reckon on more than cay two hundred niiles, if so much, of railroad tranepértation between Memphis and Chattarooga. Our readers may form an idea from this of the length of time fe- MMM CU tame ae vem weet amy Va the Tennessee to the Army of the Cumberland. It is proper to remark that the movement be- gan eteveral days ago, even before there had been any battle between Rosecrans and Bragg. The Situation at Chattanoogs, ROSECRANS’ POSITION. Our advices from Chattanooga are up to Thursday night. There had been no fighting. Brage had mace a reconnoiseance, and Gen, Rorecrans did the same. The Iatter returned, havirg met with no oppcsition. The rebels are supposed to be massed in the Chattanooga Val. ley. Rosecrans ts stfonety imirenched, and is ready to meet the en iwhenever he attacks. This is not mere talk. Ji is a tact wat Uhatta- nooga caunut be taken by assault; and as tor a siege, we he ve nothing to fear from that mode of proceeding. ‘The rumors trom Louisville that Gen. Sher- man’s corps his joined Gen, Rosecrans, and that Burneide has been captured, ure grape- vine stories merely. - With reference to rein- forcements, however, it may be eaid that tev haye by this time undoubtedly arrived from Corinth, and these will render the Army of the Cumberland safe beyond question; while it will scon, in a few days, if no disaster hap- pens, be in a condition to take the offensive. It would teem now that the rebels have lost their latt opportunity for taking Chattanooga. The juet that they did not follow up their victory on the field, would seem to indicate shat they paid too dearly for their success, and that they are not in condition to, undertake the job of capturing or dispersing Rosecrans’ army— which the work they set out to perfor: Officers belonging to Gen.Grant’s army, sent on furloughs, have been ordered to join their commands jmmediately. This indicates uciive work. The battles of Chickamauga have put all our armies in motion, or rather in preparation for motion. We are on the eve, of grand eyents. A blow struck simultaneously all around the board at this time will tel). The shell is very weak in most places, and it will break casily. Weare already feeling the én- emy at Mobile. The armies sent to strengthen Bragg have left many ppgoriant points ex- posed.— Cincinnati Gazette, Sept. 26. to a Resecrans’ Impreguable Position. {Correspondence Northern Press.} It must not be suppoted from anything Ihave said that Rosecrans isin any danger at @hat- tanooga. He has not his former army, but he is, as it stands, in an impregnable position in the city. Isend youa map of Chattanooga with this, showing, perhaps, better than I cam éx- plain in any other style, the streagth of his po- sition. The approaches to Chattanooga from the south and southwest lie through two yal- lsys—thore of Chattanooga and Cilico creek. Near the city, in fact almost within it, there is a 1ange of hills encircling itand commanding the valley for miles. Upon these hills the rebels had made strong defensive works, not many in number, as if thay thought a tew would be sufficient for the purpose of defend- ing these Agnes Gen. Rosecrans is now building a line of works connecting these iso- Inted batteries, and willin's few hours have a line of works around city which will dety tLe united strength ot Bragg and Lon; te The black lines indicate the old werks of > and the open lines the general outline of ta rifle-pits and batteries now being erected by Rorecrane. ‘ Bragg will find it an utter impossibility to dislodge Rosecrans from this position by direct advances. Hecun effect nothing with his cay- alry tpos our communications, for Gen. Mit- chell will keep him occupied; thongh he may hope to.efectsomething by his partizan friends in Tennessee. Any campaign which can re- sult in dislodging ecrans must be made in force against his eommunication. pees eae a7 Quite an excitement was occasioned at the American office yesterday, atone o'clock, by the ap ince of an officer, with a military er. who took m of the bui! or- ered the hands to leave their work, the clerks to close the counting-room, placed all who were in the editorial rooms arrest, and were about closing us Ring Qmost summary man- ner.
