“THE EVENING STAR, LATE NEWS FROM THE SOUTH. From the Rapidan—TheTwe Armies Close ‘Pogether—A Battle Imminent—The Late Battle in Georgia—Bragg’s Removal De- manded—A Federal Raid in East Tennes- see—Heavy Loss of Property—Aifair- at Charlesion. From Richmond Papers of the 22d inst., we make the following interestiug extracis: The Richmond Engnirer of the 22d, says: “The train conveyed no information from Orange on yesterday, beyond the mere suppo- sition that a battle betw Meade and Gen. Lee was imminent. Gn Sunday both parties ‘were drawn up in line of battle, from a half to ! @ quarier of & mile apart, and atsome points we understand, in full yiew of each other. This position sS maintained yesterday, and, under these circumstances, it our inform‘nts are not mistaken, it is almost impossible to see how the two armies can keep from fighting. «It was aleo reported that a force of the ene- ™my’s ca alry were at Newtown, King and Queen, meditating a raid upon the railroad. ‘Thies remains to be Confirmed. “The Central railroad brought down 25 “Yankee prisoners, taken on the Ripidan. “On Wednesday night, Capt. Moore, of the 7th Louisiana, crossed the river near Raccoon Ford, and succeeded im capturing sume 30 men beJonging to the commands of Kilpatrick and Butord, who were acting as reserves to the pickets near the river at that point. Their car- bines ind pistols were taker along with them, and also three commission-d officers.” A correspondent of the Enquirer, writing from Gen. Lee’s headquarters on Sunday last, says: * Meace has brought his whole army from Fauquier, anc has it now all on this side of the Rappahannock, iu Culpeper county. Where Longstreet, Hill and Ewell are, of course iam wot liberty to say, but this I will say, that Gen. Lee will be prepared for Meade whenever the latter shall announce his readiness for battle. “A rumor w4s circulated yesterday that the \geees had captured our pickets on Robinson un, which is the north fork of the Rapidan. At one time it was reported that a whole com- pany of cavairy had been captured. But it will turn out, 1 think, that not more than one OF two } Tisoners have been taken on that river. The Richmond Examiner, 22d, in an editorial on the news irom Bragg’s army, says : « Two years ago our army was encamped at Bow ling Green, and our batteries on the beet- ling cliff of Columbus scowled defiance at Cairo: now we hold a position on the borders ot Georgia and await the enemy’s advance in the interior of Mississippi. Chattanooga is in the enemy’s hands, and the line of the Tennes- gee, fortified by the hand of nature, and, as we are told. susceptible of detence by asmall body of tro: ps against & numerous army, has beeu yielded without an attempt at resistance. «Ina battle the loss on both sides are about é@quul; in aretreat it falls upon the retreating army. The wily and cautious Rosecrans will not fight unless supported by superiority of numbers. He risks nothing in the hope of brilliant victory andrapid triumph. Hisstrate- gy isan epitome of the war. If Rosecrans is to be defeated he must be attacked in position where he has lost no time in fortifying him- self, « The confidence of soldiers in their leaders is essential to the success of anurmy. It may be untortunate, but it is notorious that General Bragg has not Succeeded in inspiring his army with this feeling. Cannot a suitable man be Jound to command the Army of the West, ona field where so heavy a stake is to be lost or won. ‘be Whig’s editorial article says A fierce and bloody battle, lasting two days, has been foughton the Chickamauga river, a Jew miles trem Chattanooga, bet veen the forces of Bragg and Rosecrans. Thus tar, it has been indecisive, though the adyan "Ss Gre on our side. ‘Iwenty pieces of artillery, twenty-live dundred prisoners, and the possession Of the battle-feid, are the evidences and fruits of yic- tory--but the situation of atfairsin that quarter | demands greatly more than this—Roeecrans? army must be destroyed or vriven out, else we Tight to but little purpose. His lines still ¢o: irout curs, and unle-s be can be routed he w ) When we will tall back, and Tro’ will be repeated. Gen. Bragz, of course, understitnds this, and knows the necessity of pushing his present advantage to adectsiveresult Whether what is important, depends upon ut he may yet do. ‘The most complete and valuable victory of the war seems within his reach, if he has tile 6irength and the will to grasp it. The Examiner has the tollowirg telegraphic dispatches irom the seat of war: * ATLANTA, Sept. 1§.—Reports from different f#ourees concur that Rosecrans has been heayi- ly reinforced by troops from Grant's army. « Rosecrans’ forces are retiring on Chatta- tanoogi closely. The railroad is clear to Cleye- land. Only two regiments are in Huntsville, both composed ofrenegade Keniuckians—com- manded by Colonels Watts and Hall, both tormerly from Georgia.’ TLANTS, Sept. 19—This morning heavy ariillery firing was opened at daybreak, at Kingyuid, ana continued until the trains lett. ‘Lhe trains run within three miles of Ringgold. All the bridges between there and Chattanoo- ga bave been destroyed “ Quiet prevails in Trans-Mississippi up to September ud. General Magrader is at Hous- ton, very sick.” REBEL ANTICIPATIONS. The following paragapiis are from the Rebel, formeriy published at Cnattanooga, but now issued at Marietta, Ga; e are informed that President Davis was heard to exclaim im a circle of friends at the Capitol, that be would snatch Tennessee from the ciutches of Abolitionists, if it took the united armies of the South to accomplish it. From the signs of the times, it begins to look very much 4s if that obstinate man meant what he said. We begin to believe now that we shall be driving our quillin the Capitol of'Tennes- gee before another month has passed. General Bragg is surrounded by a galaxy of Righer military talent and backed by a lirger ariny than he ever before commanded during his whole milimry career. Polk, Hill, Back- ner, Breckinridge, who will perhaps command @ corps, Cheatham, Stewart, Loring, Cleburne, Walker, with those chieftains of the saddle, Forrest, Wharton, Wheeler, Scott, Pegram, Jobneon and a host of others, equally efficient and experienced, comprise his able corps of @tsistauts. A well-planned maneuver for the capture of @ strong torce of theenemy was deteated on Saturday, by the failure of the commander to whom was entrusted the business of cutting the enemy off in the rear to come up. ¥ROM BAST TENNESSEE, The Richmond Dispatch of the 22d mst. con- tains the following: + ZOLLICOFFER, Sept. 20.—To Gen. 8. Cooper: The enemy made a demonstration in force on us here yesterday, and were repulsed. “My cavalry followed them to Blountville, six miles trom here. Their forces engaged to- day are believed to have been not less than 2,000—all mounted—and six pieces of artillery. Five other regiments are reported between Jonesboro’ and Wautauga bridge, but they had not engaged my force at the latter place late Ubis aiternoon. “San’L Jonzs, Major General.” “« Zollicoffer is a etation on the East Tennes- Be, and ire ia reijroad, eleven miles from ristol. Jonesboro’ is thirty-two miles from Bristol. The distance trom Bristol to Knox- ville is 130 * « BRISTOL, Sept. 21.—After the enemy retired yesterday ourcavalry went in pursuitof them, and came up with them this morning about two miles below Blountsville, where they en- camped last night. Itis reported by a courier just arrived that the enemy have again ad- Yanced two miles from Biountsyille in this direction with the intention of making a flank movement via this place. A force of Federal cavalry dashed into this place Sunday night and burnt the building erected for commissary stores, “They burnt the railroad bridge at (tood- win, on the Virginia and Tennessee railroad, and a trestle bridge on the East Tennessee and Virginia raiiroad, six miles west of here. Trains will pass over both points’ to-morrow, so there is little damage done.” AFFAIRS IN EAST TENNESSEE. The Lynchburg Republicin “learns that the tories of East Tennessee, whose name is legion, are spicy Sam with abirb hand since the ad- yent of the Northern alliez, It hears of a Con- federate enrolling officer who was shot infront of bis own house a few days age, in the pres- exce of his wile and children, six balis passing through his body. Southern men are being hunted down with fiendish ferocity—many Rave been imprisoned and shot. It is danger- ous for a Confederate soldier to make his ap- pearangs in ta disaffected districts. Matters are O &great ex! ph Bn prevaila tremity, and @ reign of CONFEDERATE VIRGIN?
