— SO HOW G? OSTS ARE MADE. As_th@ ghost manifestations at theatres are aftacting a considerable sbare of attention jast row, the following tion from the A mari- can Journal of Photograph for August 15, will te interesting to our readers: 4 On theraising of the curtain for the ghost scene, the lights of the fheatre were mostly ex- tinguished, the foot-lights entirely, while the stage was dimly lighted from above and at the sides. A murderer starts up oat of a troubled dream full of ugly, fearful sights, rends the to tatters, nla Bowery, when ghost . 1 ap) . This ghost isa simple skeleton which the murderer takes to be Death claiming him fur victim. and of course the murderer begs to be excused, &c. Death disap shortly the ghost of a lady, dec ina pre- vious act of the play, fully arranged in crino- line and jewele comes on the scene. This ghost No. 2 talks, of coursé¢, im the manner of ghosts. Ghost No. 3 takes the place of No. 2, in the form of the old miser who been lately murdered. and displays his gaping wounds. Finally the three ghost appear at the same time, the climax is reached, and the curtain falls on the harrow- ing scene. The ladies of the audience are all in terror, the gentlemen raise a loud encore, but the curtain retuses to move. We proceed to give a more accurate descrip. tion. The ghosts are of the normal size of hu- manity, and their position on the stage is defi- nitely seen. In size, form, color-and action, they arenearly hike mortals. That they are not boman is, eowerer evident lek! roam fast that they appear ani isappear w at moving from the spot here the stand. Moroever their bedies are imp: , and sonretimes objects behind them are seen thro: them; the murderer attacks them with his “trusty steel,” cleaving them from head to heel without dis- turbing them in the least. Our magic lantern and concave mirror theories melted away be- fore the facts we saw. The absence of screen, the life-size Le hese ails minated the nataxas v ands. were et ements of ee pst coh éxpianations. We went away the first night quite Sones, here were things which had not been dream: of m our philosophy. We began to feela sym- pathy for those who said they smelt sulphur, and believed they had seen a genuine ghost, Spirit-rappirgs and table-rappins are only an awkward and distant approximation to the genuine ghost phenomena. Yet the manner of raising the ghost is ridicu- lously simple; a little judicious reflection and the thing is accomplished. Thus: at the front of the stage there is erected a large sheet of plate glass inclined toward the audience, at an angle of about fc -five degrees with the floor. This glass is invisible to the audience, and it does not obstruct the view of objects behind it. in front of the glass and under its inclination there is an opening in the floor of the stage, at which the person who acts the ghost is plaged. Now, when the lightis turned on thisactor, the image of him is seen by reflection from the lass; the pute glass acts like a looking glass. othing is visible to the spectators but the im- age, and by varying the position of the actor the image or ghost is brought to any spot de- sired; is made to advance, recede, etc; and by varying the intensity, color and position of the light, other interesting exects are obtained. This explanation will probably be sufficient to ena- bie any of our readers, if so disposed, to get up a ghost fof their private use. Coming down [way now, every day we see the ghosts of Ronee stages, and people, in all the store win- lows. 4&7 Life in Richmond is ra A local paper says if the gambling and drinking go on as at present fortwo years, Richmond will be all faro banks up stairs, and all bar-rooms on the first floor, and every poy in town a king ot diamondsor a knight of the order of rum- punch. &7 The New York Post says capital is abun- dant. In the lists, published almost daily in tue newspapers, on the arrival of the sick, it will be noticed that a very large proportion are suffering from debility. Every case of that kind can be readily cured by Hoofland’s German Bitters. Diseases resulting from disorders of the di, organs are speedily removed. We have no he tionin stating that, if these Bitters were freely used among our soldiers, hundreds of lives might be saved that otherwise will be lost. We call particular attention to the following re- markable and well authenticated cure of one of the nation’s heroes, whose life, to use his own langu: “has been saved by the Bitters :’’ PHILADELPHIA, Augustg2sd, 1843, Messrs. Jones & Fvans.—Well, gentlemen, your Hoolland’s German Bitters has saved my life. There is no mistake in this. It is vouched for by numbers of my comrades, some of whose names are appended, and who were fuily cognizant of all the circum- stances of my ease. I ee have been for the last four years, a member of Sherman’s celebrated battery, and under the immediate command of Cap- tain K. B. Ayres. Through the exposure attendant upon my arduons duties, 1 was attacked in Novem- ber last with inflammation of the lungs, and was for seventy-two days in the hospital. This was fol- lowed by great debility, heightened by an attack of dysentery. I wasthen removed from the White ‘ouse and sent to this cityon board the steamer “State of Maine,’’ frem which I landed on the sth ofJune, Since that time I have been about aslow as any ene could be and still in a spark of vital- ity. For a week or more I was scarcely able to swallow anything, and if I did force a morsel down, it was immediately thrown up again I could not even = a = of water on my stomach. Life could not last under these cireum- stances, and. accordingly, the physicions who had been working faithfully, thor unsuccessfully, to rescue me from the grasp of the dread Arc — frankly told me they could do no more for me, favised me to see aclergyman, and to make such disposition of my limi nds as best suited me, tance who Visited me at the hospital Am Scautorick Bteinuron, of Sixth, below Arch ets hope, to try your Bitters, tle. Though I h: for T have gained ten pounds, and I feel of being permitted to rejoin my wife and daughter, from whom I have heard nothing for eighteen months; for, gentlemen,I am a loyal Virginian from the vicinity of Front Royal. To your invalu- able Bitters I owe the certainty of life which has taken the place of vague fears—to your Bitters wil!
