LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Forp’s THEATER.—The splendid romance of “The Naiad Queen,” will be performed again this evening at Ford’s. This drama is, and has proved so attractive, that Mr. Ford ‘would no doubt be warranted in retaining it upon the boards much longer; but it must soon give way for other attractions and engage- ments. This week will therefore be the last of the representation of « The Naiad Queen,” and it is well worth seeing. Wasnincton TaeaTer.—Mr. Cascedy an- nounces the performance here to-night of “The Death Fetch of the Ruined Castle, or the Foun- tain of Life,” a drama in which will appear Prof. Lejuen’s illusory phantom, which has created so great a furore in Paris and else- where. “The Ghost” appears to be the all- and its introduction here will no doubt be re- ceived as well as elsewhere, for it is a decided novelty. CanTERBURY.— Manager Sinn also intro- duces the “ghost” in a thrilling new drama, | entitled «The Shades of Death, or the Spec- tral Visitants.” After much preparation and expense, the management here have perfected their arrangements for bringing out this illa- sion in superior style. The iHusion is perfect; for while the «‘ghost” is real to the vision, it is impalpable to the touch. In addition to this grand attraction, the regular concert hall en- wrtainment will be given, and Miss Millie Fowler, fresh from Terpsichorean triumphs in London, will make her first appearance. ————___ Tue Deart.—After our report closed on Sat- Fatal ACCIDENT. —Yesterd: John Geo. Mr. King fired his pistol twice to attract the attention of the police, and started for the spot from whence the cry was heard. He met a negro, named John Armstrong, run- ning trom the spot, and arrested him. Arm- strong was bloody, partially drunk, and gave no straight account of himself. Mr. King as- certained that a colored man was lying on the sidewalk with his throat cut. Armstrong was taken to the Second Ward station, and rounds- man Mattingly went with Mr. King to the spot, and found the colored man dead. They ob- tained a stretcher and removed the corpse to the station house. After the capture of Arm- strong he was searched, and a pocket-knife was found upon his perscn, upon & blade of which was a drop of fresh blood. Yesterday, a man named Peter Whiting, colored, was ar- Tested on suspicion of being a party to the mur- der, and was confined in the station. Coroner Woodward was notified, and a jury ‘was summoned, and an investigation took place. The deceated was identified as a col- ored laborer named George Ridout. The fatal wound was 4 cut in the right side of the neck, entering the jugular artery. The principal witnesses were Messrs. John and B. F. King, whose statements were substantially as above, Other witnesses test:fled to hearing a disturb- ance, but saw nothing of it. Armstrong having said that he cuthis hand, and that Louisa Con- oray, a colored woman, dressed it for him on Saturday morning, which statement he>made to account for the blood on his clothes, she was summoned, and testified that she knew both the men when they lived in Baltimore, but don’t know anything of this case. She lives in the vicinity of Fourteenth street and Ohio ay- enue, and said that several rows had occurred in the street during the night. About twelve o’clock there was a fight, and she saw fourmen running toward Fourteenth street bridge, but could not say whether they were white or black, or who they were. She never dressed any wound for Armstrong since she came to Washington. At the suggestion of a citizen, Leonard Hen- derson and Walker Lightfoot were summoned. Being sworn, Leonard Henderson, colored, testified that he is a teamster, and about 12 o'clock was in his wagon, in front of the Bull’s Head Stables, on Ohio avenue; heard a noise and saw twomen running and halloing after another man, who was running from them; one of the prisoners said “kill the son of a b—h;” the other snapped a pistol, but it did not go oif, and he turned toward witness and tried to get @ stone, the one who called out said ‘come on, Joe, let’s kill the son of a b—h;” witness might be mistaken in the name, he might have called John; would not know the men; one of them, the shorter of the persons, had on a frock coat; when they got near the bridge witness heard a pistol fired, and then heard no more of it; the first pursuer had the frock coat, and was the shorter man of the two. Walker Lightfoot, colored, was in another ‘wagon near the same stables; he heard the noise and the oaths, but did not see the parties. Mr. John King, recalled—Testified that he heard no pistol except what he fired to attract the police after arresting Armstrong. The jury returned their verdict as follows: «The said Geo. Rideout was found last night about 12 o'clock, lying on Fourteenth street, on the east side, nearly opposite the gate lead- ing to the Monument, with a severe cut on the right side of the neck, and bleeding profusely, and in a dying state; and the Jury believe from all the evidence that negro John Armstrong stuck him in the neck with a penknife; and that Peter Whiting was with Armstrong, and ‘was an accessory. The jury find that the de- ceased had $3 in his watch pocket, which the jury recommend to be given to his wife to as- sist in burying him. They also find the de- ceased was @ poor laboring man.” The two prisoners, John Armstrong and Pe- ter Whiting, were committed to jail for further hearing, by Justice Clayton. cf Eee Fata AccipENT.—About four o’clock yes- terday morning, Mr. James O. Bateman, who was engaged at the depotin covpling cars, was ran over by & car and was so badly injured that he died ina few hours. It appeared that he bad signalled for the train to back downand run before it to raise the coupling, when he s'umbled and fell on the track, the wheels of | one of the cars passing over one leg, brexking it in three places, and making a frightful wound under one arm.
