It contains. family papers, and some jewels and trinkets. Tazt's ali. One hundred pounds will be found in my pocket. . That will pay for the funeral and you two lawyers.” « Well, sir?” “Goon! My will!” Mr. Martin at once drew the will. It was simple and short; and, to my surprise, it marie Sir George Taunton one executor, and Mr. Martin the other. They were both bound to Rami over to Millicent Devises, on the day she became of age. the wholeof the money in funds which was standing in tne name of Mr. Deyises her father. 1 and the old gray-headed servant witnessed the will, and then Isaid, “Is the young lady Paris ! a “No; Dijon. We leit the house, and Mr. Martin handed the will to his clerk, saying, “Take care of this, Jones. Itis important; and don’t erase that oddress of Miss Millicent Deyises which I have written on the outside in pencil” sir.” Joné#s, by the by, is not your brother clerk to Sir George Taunton ?” «Yes, sir.” “Ah, I thought so. Well, I shail haye to co to see Sir George to-morrow, I tancy, abont this business.” Mr. Martin and I walked back to the Temple in discourse about old Devises and his peculiar- ities, and I went aboutmy ordinary affairs, andsoon ceased tothink of the willand its eccentric author. I saw, in theobituary of one of the moruing papers, that Mr. Devises was dead. I wondered fora moment or twoif all had gone right in regard to his will, and then I was about to dismiss the affair from my mind, when there came asharp and sudden knock at my outer door, and in afew seconds my clerk announced “Mr. Martin, sir, if you please, and Madame Kowpot.” “Madame who !” said L ««1t was something like that, sir. Bowenare.” «Let them come in.” Mr. Martin appesred, accompanied by an elderly lady of most unmistakable French ap- pearanee, and who, on the instant she saw me, began 4 torrent of spcech that was perfectly bewildering. « Ah, monsieur, Ihave come to goto you. I shall go to speak. Mademoiselle Millicent is alter, and go off, away, different. Douze-ceni-cinguante franes! Ah! Mon Dieu! Madame, allow this gentleman to speak ” Mudame Beaupere rose and executed a pro- found curtesy, and then sat down again, and | Waited; with her enuff-box in her hand, while the solicitor spoke; but I saw that he was very wary. that he did not get another pinch of snuif in his eye. “This lady,” he snid, “is the lady, at Dijon, with whom Miss Millicent Devises was brought up since her infancy.” + C’est vrai!” exclaimed Madame Beaupere. «Mr. Devices, after making his will, died at | the precise hour he indicated, and I commnuni- | cated at once with Sir George Taunton, and | ‘wrote to Miss Millicent to Dijon.” + Bon!" cried Madame Beaupere; and after a tremendous rustling of her dress, she pro- duced a letter. “T receive him.” * Yes,” added Mr. Martin, «that is the letter. ‘There is no doubt abont the identity of Madame | Beaupere. Well, sir, the young lady came to | Engiand, and went directly to Sir George | Taunton’s house; and he sent for me, and all ‘was or all seemed to be, right; and only yester- day she became of age, for she was baptized at Bloomsburry church; and, in accordance with | the provisions of Mr. Devises’s will, Sir George | and I have transferred to her the whole of his ; fertune, and she is now living in Park Lane in reat style.”? “ Vraiment /” cried Madame Beaupere; douze- ety tecinguante francs.” «« Well, what then !” said I. +: Well this lady called on me only two hours ago. i*he had been to Ormond street, and there | she got my address, as the legal adviser of the Jate Mr. Devises; and she said Miss Millicent | promised rhe moment she gotto London, to | remit her twelve hundred and fifty francs, and j has notdone so, or taken any notice of her. Nous verrons! Hatha!” «J thought it strange and odd,” added Mr. Martin; “and offered to go with Madaine to | Miss Devises, at her splendid house in Park Lane. And we went.” «Well, you got the twelve hundred and fifty francs !” “No. We saw Miss Devises, but Madame don’t know her.” «Don’t know her ?* «No; and she aver: erson who was for her Pension, at Dijon I started to my fect. “An impostor !” cried 1. «Imposteurs!
