K — LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. WASHINGTON THEATER.—The best evidence of the excellence of the St. Denis troupe is to be fonnd in the fact that amusement-seekers continue to crowd the house nightly. Each act meets with deserved applause. The pan- tomimists are excellent; the dancing and per- formances on the rope and wire graceful and spirited, and the music of that style which is sure to please. Performance to-night, and to- morrow afternoon a very attractive matinee for families and others. CANTERBURY.—This popular resort, which is firmly established in the affectiohs of all fan lovers, continues to be crowded nightly. The bill offered is invariably gocd, and ne one who buys aticket feels that the investment is use- less, tor it is impossible to visit Canterbury | and not enjoy a hearty, healthy laugh. Go to- night and test the matter. To-morrow after- noon there will be a matinee for ladies and children. VARIETIES.—While the concert hall enter- tainments given at this resort this week have been as usnal—good—yet the great attractive feature of the week has been the new local drama, The Belle of Washington.” It will be periormed to-night again. Among the places of amusement now open in this city, none of- fers opportunities of enjoyment superior to Varietirs. > Deaticetive Fixk.—Aboutame o’clock last evening a stuble in the rear of a row of twe- story frame dwellings on Thirteenth street, between N and U, was discovered to be on fire, and, notwithstanding the efforts of the neigh- bors and ofiicer O'Hara (who was near by at the time) in pulling down the fences so as to prevent the flames catching to the houses, they were soon in a blaze, and before it could be extinguished four two-story dwellings were totally cousemed and two others were burnt considerably. The firemen from every part of the city were at the scene, but from yvirious causes they could not get to work early. One of the four-way plugs atthe corner of Thir- teenth st.eet and N could not be used for a long time, it taking halt a dozen men on the wrench to move the cap. Whether this fanit lies with the Department we Know not, but | certain it is if tae hand engines could have got water from this plug as suon as they arrived, more than halt of the property would haye been saved. The steamer Hibernia worked trom this plug after it was oyened, and threw | a tremendous stream upon the fire; but the | hand engines, having to get their water from such distances, conld throw butsmall streams. The house of Mr. Lee, two of Mr. Venable, one occupied by Mr. Young,) and one of Mr. Corrigan, were totally destroyed, and the two owned by Mr. James Carroll, (one occupied by Mr. Lockmeyer,) were rendered unfit for use. The loss amounts to above $4,((0) in houses and furniture. There is in insurance of $600 on one of Mr Carroll's houses, and one ot Mr. Venable’s is also insured. The police were on the ground and rendered efficient service in taking care of the property, the second precinct officers remaining all night. There was some litle disorder among the vast crowd, but no fighting occurred. se emg eae Sent Back To BALTIMORE.—Last week one of the fancy girls of Baltimore, who had been staying at Mrs. Hoftman’s, No. i#1 Tenth street, and goes by the name of Dora Sheller, paid a visit to Baltimore. While there she was robbed of all her money, and went to her brother, an errand boy in the jewelry store of Hervis Hnu- bers, and told him of her loss. Saturday her brother stole from the store three gold watches, a lot of finger-rings and a breastpin, and gave them to his sister to put her in funds. Yester- day Mr. Iiubers and a detective came to Wash- ington in search of the young woman. Obtain- ing the aid of Sergeant Cronin, they went to the house of Mrs. Hoffman, and without diffi- culty recognized her in the midst of the crowd of females and soldiers, some of whom had not heard the reveille, and were still in bed, though the hour of noon had passed. The trunks of the young woman were searched, but none of the property was found. She was taken into custody by Sergeant Cronin, but she expressed @ willingness to go to Baltimore withoutawait- ing a requisition from the Governor of Mary- land, and Sergeant Cronin delivered her to detective Wm. J. Bowling, of the Baltimore police, who started with her for Baltimere by the 3.30 train of cars. as CouRT-MARTIAL.—The court-martial re- cently ordered to assemble in this city, of which Maj. Gen. Hitchcock is President, have been engrged in the trial of Hazell B. Cashell, of Montgomery county, Maryland. Cashell was charged with giving information te the rebel cavalry as to the whereabouts of a large number ef Government cattle, by which they were enabled to capture them. Mr, Charles Elbert, a member of the bar, from Maryland, appears for the accused. The decision of the court im this case is leoked to with great inter- eet, as there are already a number of cases of like character, and this may be regarded as a precedent. . The next case to be taken up, it is under- stood, will be that of Samuel White, formerly detective in the employ of Uol. Fish, Provost Marshal of the city of Baltimore. He was ar- rested by order of Col Baker. The charges Against him are that he received bribes trom rebels tor favors which his position enabled him to extend to them. aa Ss Tue GOVERNMENT STEAM FIRE DEPART- MENT.—On Wednesday, twosteam fire engines, ordered by the Government for use in this city, were received and temporarily housed in the Union Engine-house, which has been occupied lor some time by the Hibernia. The new steamers are of small size, but are said to be very poweriul, and were builtin Philadelphia. Two splendid hose carriages come with them. Ove of them can be drawn by hand: weighing {06 pounds less than the Franklin spouting engine. These steamers will form the Govern- ment Steam Fire Department, and will te under the direction of Mr. Wm. Dickson, who has been appuinted chief engineer, and we un- derstand that one of them (the “Gen. D. H. Ruoker,”) will be located on F street, between Twenty-first and Twenty-second, in the neigh- borhood ot the repair shops, and the other (the “Gen. Meigs,’) atahe railroad park in swam- poodle, where a large number of stables are now being erected. ee A HANDSOME PRESENT.—The clerks and Ia- boring men connected with the Commissary Department of this city, did the handsome thing with one of the clerks under Lieut. Col. George Bell, Commissary at this point. Yes- terday evening a committee, which had been previously appointed by the donors, purchased a handsome gold chain, valued at $46, and an elegantly finished album worth 26.50, which they presented to the lucky clerk, Mr. Diffen- derffer, before he could decline the gifts, or inquire why they were presented. It appears that Mr. D. came here about the time the emer- gency looked the most threatening, and has since been indefatigable in his labors, in at- tending to the duties of the department. Mr. Diffenderffer left for Washington last evening, to continue cn under his able commander, Lieut. Col. Bell.—Harrisburg Telegraph. pare A SavaGh Wire-neaTER.—Yesterday after- noon officer Mills, of the Fourth Ward, arrested Thos. Fitzgerald for beating his wife. Both are young enough to live together cosily and happily ; but Mrs. F. appeared with a black e, indicating terrible matrimonial infelicity. itzgerald did not deny whipping her, butsaid in the station-house that the next time she called him a=—n of a b—h he would be ar- rested for something! The evidence proved that he rst struek her in the eye and knocked her down ; he then pulled her clothes up over her head and ikicked her naked sides until he broke three of her ribs. Justice Giberson thought the case one for court, and held Fitz. gerald to bail in $500 for appearance there for trial. This magician is a son of the femons ‘¢ Wizard of the North,” snd is said to surpass his father in magical skill, all of his effects being produced without the aid of any apparatus and solely by manual skill. oS SS REPAIRING THE STREETS.—The Quarter- master’s Department has now engaged a large number of wagons and men on the streets of the city filling up the ruts, grayeling them, &c. Some of them have been cut up by Govern- ment wagons so as torender them almost im- passable. es Cees A War MEETING To bE HELD.—We under- stand that some of our citizens are taking the military steps towards holding another war meeting; similar to the one held last year, and it is expected that all arrangements will be made by the fifteenth of August. aa MAsS* Soe S Seconp Warp Station Casgs:—Mary J.
