THE EVENING STAR. THE ECCENTRIC WILL. [FRom 4N ENGLISH JUDGE'S NOTE-BOOK.} Ore fine morning in February, 19, 1 was sent for hy a frie nd of mine, a barrister in the ‘Texple, London, who said, by his cler«, that he wish>. to speak tome particularly: and a; Thad chambers then in Elm Tree Court, and bis chambers werein King’s Bench Walk, I puton my hat and went over to him at once. With my friend, I found asolicitor, who was well enough known to us both; and after the weual salutations my friend said, “{ere is Mr, ; Mertin, whom you know; and he tells me tha: | he is sent for by a Mr. Devises, a very rich min, residing in great Ormond street, wants to make his wil], but cannot or will not do it antil he has had a conference with a bar- rister. Iam busy, and cannot go; but if you like to doro, you may as well. Itisa little out of the reguiar way, but, after all, that don't much matter.” “And a twenty guinea fee,” added Mr. Mar- tip, with a bland look. Twenty guinea fees were not so plentifal in those days, that one, when it presented itself, although rather irregularly, was not to be dis- pised; so I consented at ence. Mr. Martin and I therefore,as the day was fine, walked together toGreat Ormon street, Queen Square, which was then quite a fash- sonable district. The house in the occupation of Mr. Devises was quite a mansion, witha large hall aud a road, handsome staircase, with gilt rails. Old family pictares were upon the walls, and pieces of armor. In fact, the whole aspect of the place assumed thatthe house belonged to some ancient and most respectable family. And such, in truth, was the fact; for Mr. Martin, on our way, informed meot some per- ticulars connected with our client which were curious ard interesting. Mr. Devises, then, was the brothor-in-law of one of our Judges—Judge Taunton, who was a baron of the exchequer. He hai marrisd, some twenty or two and-twenty years ago, the sister of the then Mr. Taunton, but now Sir George Taunton. One danghter was born, and theneome fatal and serious dissension broke out between Mr. Devises and his wife, anda separation took place. which induced Mrs. Devises to retire to France with her Gauzhter, From that time to the present, Mr. Devises had led @ gloomy and solitary life alone in his honse, in Great Ormond street. Now he found himself at the point of death, and he wished to make his will. Hence our errand to his house, “But why” said I, ‘did he not send for Sir George Taunton, his brother-in-law !"" “So asked him,” replied Mr. Martin; sand the mere idea was very nearly the death of Itappears that there has teen some ter- rible quarrel between them, and he will not hear eyen his name mentioned with patience.” “Indeed }? “Yee. J was glad to drop the subject. Bat Bere we are at his house.” ‘We were met in the hall of the mansion by Mr. Martin’s clerk, whom he had sent on before, to be there in readiness; and a very respectable gray-headed old servant sheok his head as we asked how poor Mr. Devises was. “Very bad, gentlemen very bad; but heis in @ terrible temper, for all that.” “I expected as much,” said Mr. Martin. “I fully expected as much.” This anouncem:nt was far from giving 16 Bnalloyed satisfsction, for ldid not feel quite disposed to put np with the “terrible temper” of Mr. vises, I knew well-sough that family solicitors like Mr. Martiu occasionally came in the way of such mat.ers, but atthe bar it is quite another thing. “I don’t know, Mr. Martin,” I said, “that I shall, after all, like this affair.” “Oh, it’s nothing—it is nothing,” he said. will epeak to him.” al We followed the respectable old servant ap } the grand staircase, and were ushered into a yoom of large and lofty aspect, atthe further end of which, on acouch with an abundance of pillows, lay Mr Deyises. *Go to the dence, all of you !" he bawled ont as he saw: us. “What do you want here! | Thieves. I suppose !? «No, Mr. Devises,” said Mr. Martin. « Law- yere, if you please !” «It’s all the same,” he yelled. you want here, eh! dead, eh?” “Sir,” said I, “if you don’t want me, I will go, but I wastold you wanted toseea barrister, | and lamone. Butif you are disposed to be abusive”. “No, no, no!’ interposed Mr. Martin. «It is all right, my dear sir. You were so good as tosay you wanted a conference with a counsel learned in law, and I have brought you this gentleman.” “Oh, an have, have you!” growled Mr. Devisesyin a somewhat mollitied tone. suppose yon are all alike! Sitdown!” his invitation to sit down was given in something the manner of what one might sup- | pose to be the politeness of a bear on an intrn- | sion into his den. We sat down. “Well,” growled Mr. Devyises, “what do you want now you are here, eh? «“«My good sir,” said I, “the question is, what do you want! AllI want is to get away « gcon as possible from so uucivil an old he “My dear sir,” interposed Mr. Martin; “really, now, really” Old Mr. Devi: anghed like a hyena. “Hatha! Eughteugh! I like you. Very well,” headded. “You area counsel!” “lam,” Mr. Devises shut his eyes, andi: was eyi- gently @ great trial to his temper to say what he did say. «Tam about,” gin,” to utter the names of people I have ne spoken of for twenty years: butasITam dying now— t shall die to-night at the tnra of the tide My dear sir,” said Mr. Martin, ina soft and deprocatory tone, +1". «Silence! roared old Mr. Devises, Mr. Martin shunk back in his chair. **Atthe ‘tnrn of the tide,’ * man. “TJ have said and I knowit There- fore, it becomes nece: y that should settle my affai if Thad no—no child, I would | leave my money in’a mass to each of the mock charitable societies and institutions in London, so that they might all zo to law aboutit, and he ruined; but Ihave adaughter, and—and she must have it all.” “A very proper disposition,” began the solicitor. ‘1 ”——_ « Silene Toared old Devises again. «+ Dear me,” said Mr. Martin, in an under- tone, “I really never was so snubbed in my life before.” “Or,” added Mr, Devises, “I would have leftmy money to six attorneys, with a life interest to six other attorneys in it, and some few other complicated bequests, which weuld have made them all ready to cut each others’ throats aboutthe property. But, asI say, I have a daughter—a daughter !” « Yes, sir.” “Silence !" «Dear m “IT have a daughter. Her name is Millicent. My wife’s name was Millicent. She was the sister of George Taunton.
