Tatermediate School No. 1, First District, taught by Miss A. K. Lowe, at the corner of Fourteenth and G streets, was examined by Messrs. Morsell and Wilser, in the presence of quite a numberof the parents and friends of the pupils. Tkeroom was handsomely dec- | orated with the national colors, eyergreensand | fiowers. The roll of this school has 59 girls, of whom 47 were present. There are three classes, which were examined in spelling, dictation, reading, punctuation, mental and practical arithmetic, geography and grammar, but the programme was sa long that in some of the branches of study the examination was neces. sarily very much abbreviated. The pupils showed great readiness upon orthograply, sounds Of letters, abbreviations, notation, and ihe use of capitals. During the exercises, a number of pieces of music were surg in fine style, under the lend ot Prof. Daniels, and at the close the Littl: Misses favored the audience by singing with- out aid some of their favorite pieces. The an- =wers to the questions proposed at the written examination on Monday. were opened a submitted to the scrutiny of those present. With but few exceptions, the answers were correctly written in Ee) tears hand, quite a pro- portion of those in arithmetic being worked by ihe best inethods. During the year this school has been receiy- ing, almost constantly, scholars from the sec- ondary schools, whose introduction into the classes necessarily cause a break in the studies; nad the best echolars huve been transte: often to the erammar school, leayin ere those who ase not so far advanced, 3 course the sebolars could not be expected to be perfect but under the circnmstances, their progress was creditable to Miss ewe At the close, the examuuing trustees and Pro- fessor Daniels briefly addressed the scholars, congratuliting them upen their snecess. Mr. Wilson had not becn as good as he could have wished, buttaken in connection with the written ex- aminauon he wis saustied that no schools could excell them. He announced that the trustees, atier examining the answers to the questions, had determined to transiey the tol- t school: Marian Beard- Ivy, Louisa Denhaia, Annie Dillow, Mary Ed- Wonsion, Zorah V. Gray, Alice Hirst, Anna Estee Lindsay, Willie Miller, Sarah Ruther- tord, Sarah Sothoron, and Rose Utermehle. Primary No. 3, Second District, taugnt by Miss” nds Baird, was examined by M. H. Miller. Feq. The examination developed pro- gvtess on the part of the children jn all the ele- mentary branches. The number of scholars attending this school is i—30 of whom were present yerterday. Primaty No. 4, same district, numbering 60 par and taught by Miss M. Y. Davis, was etamincd by UC. H. Utwermehie, Trustee. The as wers bese were not -o prompt and correct agin seme of the other schogls of the same grade, which we have visited; but a reasog for the short-coming is found in the fact that the schooi is of recent formation, being the last orgsuizesl in the district. Miss Davis possesses thy Tove of her littie pupils, and they already afiord evidence of improvement under ber instructions. Average attendance during the year, 15. Ow to the indisposition of the teacher, Bliss Acton, the examination of Secondary No. 1, Disw: So. 2, was postponed to Tue day next. Primary Schoo! The order maintained inside the school throuzhout ahee sexamir em, tors, @xa sively annoyed by the bad conductu! u boys aad girls outside, who had no conn whatever with the schools. Secondary Scnvoi No. 1, of this distr which Mrs. Ehza W. Clarke is teach examined by Dr. CO. W. Davis, and wi satisfactory results. This school has iabored under the disadvantage of a frequ of teacher, sfliction im Mrs. Clark family having compelled her to entrust the tuition of | her pupils frequently to the assistants. Fitty- eight pupils ont of & rell of sixty were present a@t the examination. The children here ex- celled, especially in reading and writing on the slate, in the fattar exercise the letters being earetully and neatly formed. Here, as atall the schools, singing 1s made a feature, and tha children sang * Vive l& America,” and other songs with pleasing effect. «+ When this Cruel War is Over” was sung also inadmirabie style by two little mleses, Annie Young and Mary Langley, the entire schaol joining in the chorus. ‘These Little girls are bat ten yeurs of age, and their attamments in study would do credit w scholars in more advanced schools. ‘Tht cehool is held im‘a room on Eleventh Street, between Virginia avenue and M street, and in a duil@eg utterly anfit. Wight. This school is held in a mixerably damp and illy ventilated room in the basementot the Methodist Protestant Church on Virginia avenue. Fifty-nine pupils (all of whom were present at yesterday’s examius- tion) are daily cougregat-d in this hole, 39 by 18 feet, where no air can circulate, as the buse- ment is wedged in between two buildings. The scholars bere are orderly and show rapid ad- vancement. Many of the pupils who one year ago scarcely knew their letters are now reading and writing well and ciphering as tar as short division. ith Dut few exceptions the clases are quick at figuree, and generally present sat- iste snewers. In writing, the papils show exceilent progress, and their copy-books are unusually neat and clean, a fact which speaks well both tor teacher and scholars. Ia reading and spelling, the children did meng- urably well, and, onthe whole, the examina- ion was highly satixtactory. 1t is to be hoped that before another year rolis around, the three schools of this districtabove-mentioned will be beid in rooms more conducive to the health aad comfort of the pupils. The cral examination of the male interme- Giate school, Pourth District, Miss Ema L. Reed teacher, took place yesterday afternoon. At was conducted by the sub-board of the dis- trict. There are 30 scholars on the roll, 45 of whom (we believe) were present.
