Batti sors, June 24.—A dispateh to me from David Welle, a prominent Jawyer of Gettye- ‘burg, dated noon to-dey, esys that a small number of mounted rebels appeared esterday afternoon near Cashtown, and were fred nn by Federal bnehwackers, mortally wounding one, The others immediately retired. No rebels bave yet been nesrer Gettysburg than eight miles. Captain Irwin, President of the Western Maryiand road, Jett Union bridge at2 o'clock this afternoon. The Whole ef Ewell’s Corps in Pennayl- vania. MeCoNNELLaBeRG, June v4.—The excite- ment along the border remains unabated. Busi- nese is at @ perfect stand-still. Exposed constantly to incursions of rebel marauding bauds, farmers are compelled to keep their horses concealed in the mountains, and the prospects of reaping the coming har- vest ure discouraging. ‘The rebels are overrunuing Franklir county. ‘Two rebel deserters trom a North Carolina regiment, belonging to Ewell’s corps, came into our lines thic morning, and report the whole of that commander's forces 1n Pennsyl- vyania. ‘The rebe}s are in torce at Blercersburg, and have driven in our pickets this side of the town. It is thought they will attempt to feel our strength this side of the mountain. 4.40 v. «.—The rebel infantry is reported coming uP. the monntain from Mercersburg in foree. The roads are blockaded, but peorly supported. The Rebels Within Twelve Miles of Car- lisle—Statement of a Deserter. SHURG, June 24.—The city bas been in state ef exciteme! liday. The news trom up the valley shows that the rebels are rapidly advancing in this direction im strong lorce. No troops would hardly venture so far from the bass of their operations into an enemy’s country without a force sufficient to act on the offensive. So far no opposition has been made to their movements. The rebels are now twelve miles from Carileieagnd arc still ad- vancing. Gen. Knipe, commanding the forces in the valley, will pronably give them battle at that point. The rebels will no doubt appear in front of that town to-morrow. Gur cavalry, who fell back at the rebel ad- fantry as yet, but there is nu doubt a strong sorce is in supporting distance. i A deserier belonging to the 41th Georgia reg- iment arrived here tq-day. On Sunday night his regiment was doing picket duty near Ha- gerstown, and on Monday morning fifty of them deserted and safely made their way to the mountains, where they remained all night. Yesterday morning they all started for Fred- erick city, hoping to make their wa i more, wiih the exception of this man, who j ee ea) x ow! i a. came to Gettysburg. Itis believed they are coming in this di- rection, supporting Jenkins’s force of cavalry. Sixteen vi ans of the war of 1512 to-day visiteu Gr | at the Capitol, and tendered their sery » Which were accepted. No Rebels East of Boonsbore. DALTiNO:k, June 24.—Later and reliable ac- counts from Frederick are, that there are no rebels near there, aud that the force in the val- ley beyond South Mountain have made no Movement in this direction. There are no | rebels east of Boonsboro. which is four miles west of South Mountain. Information received atheadquarters to-night confinn the previous account of x. heavy rebel force belug im the valley west of Boonsboro. They were moving northward, but it was not ascertained whether they were taking the Chambersburg road or the road leading to- wards Gettysburg. The artillery accompanying this body of rebels is said to number sixty-s!x pieces. Some of the students of St. Jumes’s Qollege, near Hagerstown, arrived here this evening, who passed through the rebel lines yesterday. The accounts given by them agree as to the force being large aud as to the number of caunon. One stndent esumated the column he saw at #,000 stron;. HARRIsBUKG, midnight, June2i.—The rebels are within twenty-five miles of Harrisburg. The enemy’s coluinn halted atduskabouteight miles the other ~ide of Carlisle, and went into camp. The authorities are in telegraphic communi- cation with Grayson Station, two miles from the rebel pickets. (heir lines to-night are very strong. The result of to-morrow is looked for- ward to With much anxiety, and not without some doubts. Gen. Knipe may give the enemy battleat Car- lisle, or fall back to the Susquehanna. A bat- tle will undoubtedly be fought or the place evacnated before to-morrow night. Gen. Couch has thrown @ strong column in the neigb borhcod of Gettysburg, on the enemy’s right flunk. This, in gonnection witk certain iovements of the urmy of the Potomac in their Tear, will make it a dangerous experiment for them to aitem pt to hold the line of the Susque- } hanna. Numerous arrests haye been made.to-gay on the south side of the river of parties suspected of being rebel spies and guerrillas, but on the cases being investigated most of them proved to be refugers. The clerks and other attaches of the State capital to-day haye organized themselves into a company tur the detense of the city. The works on the opposite side of the river have been completed, and the guns are being mounted. The Philadelphia Gray reserves, 1,100 strong, are still here, but they refuse to be mustered in. Their conductis severely commentedon by other iroops. : Gen, Andrew Porter arrived here to-day, and tendered his services to the authorities.
