The reader is referred to tae details of the latest news of the current rebel raid into Mary~ ~ land and Pennsylvania, published in this af. ternoon’s Siar, for all tht information concern- * ing it that is at hand here at the hour at which we go to press. As difficull as it is to analyze these wonderful and conflicting accounts, we really cannot see in them evidence that more than tem ortwelve thousand rebels have yet ctossed the Potomac or that they are, advanc- ihg north of it to any other end than to steal horses, beef cattle and other needed supplies. Soar they have inflicted such damage only through the agency of small squads of mounted men, which they send out in every direction, as they slowly advance. These small parties advance buta few miles from their supports. and invariably skedaddle on sight of squadsof Unionists in arms, indicating a purpose of seriously opposing them. The Pennsylvania militua, who haye so fur been entrusted with the defense of their State south of the Sasque- hanna, if the telegrams tell the truth, are sure to “fall buck” on the sightof a grey-back; leav- ing horses, cuttle, arags, clothing, boots and shoes, &c., Which the imtensely scared inhabi- tants have not had sufficient energy and fore- thought to remove, & prey to the marauders. There is nothing known to j fy the current story tha: Lee has 100,000 men at Winchester, | That made its first appearance in a Penusylva- nia paper, and is therefore to be received with very large allowance. There 1s uo probability im the account saying that slarge force of rebels ‘Was yesterday evening moving from the direc- tion et Boonsboro to Frederick. If true, how- ever, it simply proves that Lee proposes tosteal im 88 many directions as possible, and over as great an extent of territory as possible, in the shortest possible time; for he cunnot be swoop- ing west to Pittsburg, north to Harrisburg and east to Raltimore with large armies directed against each, while he also tarries at Winches- | ter with one hundred thousaud men—such being the tenor of the various accounts coming to Washington since our last issue. in truth, up totwo p. m. to-day, we have been able to learn nothing justifying a change | ot the impressiogp we lately published, thar Lee's main object in coming North was to at- tack Washington, it he can induce Hooker to seatter his anny; and that he is now trying to accomplish that object while at the same time supplying his forces from Maryland aud Peansyivania with absolutely necessary things of which the rebel territory within hfs reach | as utterly exhausted. The most deplorable fact inyolved in the | situation is, certainly, the apparent utter in- t competency of the people of Pennsyivania to protect themselves and aid the cause, even to | the poor extent of driving their horses and cat. tle North, snd concealing their coveted other goods before the different little squads of rebe! cavalry pounce on them. NAVAL ORDEES H The following orders were i-sued by the Navy Department to-day : | Lieutenant Commander T. H. Mastman, has been ordered to temporary ordnance duty at the Navy Yard, Washingten. By this plan itis hoped that a very large proportion of the two-years’ ' and nine-months’ men, just discharged, may be | induced tore-enlist for the war. These veter- ans are to be offered, in addition to the #100 | bounty and psy which si] the National sol- { diers receive, « bounty of $0, and are to form | A special corps, distinguished both trom gon. | Scripts and from other three years’ men. The Government is to be reimbursed, mau for ian, | for this #300, from the substitu fund to be | raased under the draft, and which by the terms | of the act must be dey two this purpose ! ‘Thece advantages are to be forteited in case the | men to whom they appeal do net avuil them- | selves of them within a fixed time, which wil | Provably be sixty days. Witnesses at the inqnest testified that on Thursday night last, as a canal boat was pass- ing up the canal, they heard some oneon the boat saying in # distressed tone of voice “Don’t do that,” “don't do that,” but there was no evidence to fix aconnection with the body found and the circumstance above related, and the jury therefore failed to find how the deceased came to his death. A southerly wind bore the effiuvia directly over the heart of the city, and itrequires no gift of prophecy to say that it carried the seeds of pestilence and death to many anow happy household. The piague- stricken victims will die, inevitably, and sapient preachers will prate over their coffins about “bowing in submission to the decrees of a wise and inscrutable Providence.” We take it that Providence is not at all inclined to shoulder the responsibility for the mischief done by that bed nasty stinking mantrap. the Washing- ton Canal.
