Martindale's staff, héld an examination in the case ot policeman J. F.-Parker, who 1s charged with beating the colored corporal John Ross, and also with tearing off his chevrons, on Tnes- day evening last. from the evidence it ap- peared that as the corporal was passing along Seventh street, above the Northern Market, some boys threw stones at him, and he ran after one of them named Parker, chasing him imto the house. The brother of the boy opened the window and inquired the cause of the dis- turbance, and the corporal told him if he did not whip the boy he (the corporal) would ar- rest him (the brother), The brother, teld Ross to #0 Sway, remarking that he thonght him druak and mccain Rome eter trouble with him. The corporal replied in very abusive langu: alleging that he had ‘Authority to arrest ae <owhite s—p of a b—h.” A crowd gathered around, and the excitement ran high, when J. F, Parker, a policeman, but no relative of the boy’s, and another policeman, arrested Ross, and with difficulty got him along, the crowd pushing him in the melee; some one tee ing off one cheyron and the police the other. Alter the police had taken him m charge, the corporal called the policemen white s—s of b—hes, and one of the latter struck him over the head with a slung-shot. It was in evidence that the corporal said he would go with the police, but not with the mob. Parker admitted having struck him with a billy, and says that in the melee he may have torn the chevrons off, but that he does not recollect it, and if he did so it was accident. Capt. Merritt stated that whatever might be the private opinions of any one, the Govern- ment having authorized the raising of colored soldiers, they shonid be treated as soldiers. The evidence will be-laid before Gen. Mar- tindale for his action, Superintendent Webb being responsible, in the meantime, for the Sppetraics of Mr. Parker whenever heis called for. . pie see ot tts DEPARTURE OF CONVICTS FOR ALBANY.— Yesterday evening thirty-one convicts, sen- tenced by the Criminal Court for various of- fenses committed im this District, took their departure for the prison at Albany, N. Y. | Among them were George Ward and George Carrol, convicted of garroting and robbing Lt. Sellers; Wood and Sager, knocking a soi- dier down and robbing him; Sweet, alias White, hotel robbery; John Howard, (colored, ) Jobn Bruce, (colored,) and Nich. Warner, as sault and battery with intent to kill; Billy Patterson, (colored,) burglary; and fifteen wo- men, for various offenses. Ali the bailiffs of the Criminal Court, and Messrs. Robinson and Sylvester of the jail guard, and W. A. Mulloy, deputy marshal, have them in charge. es Mz. Wisr’s InJuRrEs.—Mr. Samuel Wise, whose carpenter shop was destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning, was badly burnt in en- deavoring to get out his coat. hen the alarm was given, Mr. W. rushed in and attempted to get his tool chest, but was followed by Mr. King, who urged him to return, seeing that it was impossible to move the chest, and they started out.- Mr, W., however, returned to get his coat, in the pocket of which was his account book, when the flames struck him, burning off the rim of his hat, the back of his vest and shirt, the skin peeling off his neck, shoulders and back. Dr. Borrows is attending Mr. W., who is improving in his condition, but it will be some time before he will be well. soe es SzTt To Work.—A number of contrabands have been put to work in the neighborhood of LLincoin and Emory Hospitals, in covering up the night soil which has been deposited in that locality. The scavengers of the Fifth end Sixth Wards and the Government, makes this local. aty their bank of deposit. The contrabands who were put to work preparing the place by Capt. Krause, it is said, dug the pits ten feet deep, and a well known physician, now at- tached to the army, a few weeks ago rode into one of the pits, and both rider and horse came mear being lost. The commission created by the War Department to report upon the sani- tary condition of the city, earnestly complained of this locality. pee Licut Weicut Ha ‘here has been much complaint recenily of the practise of selling baled hay in this city that has not passed over the scales of the corporation weighers, and which falls far short of the weight for which itissold. The practise is a swindle upon the buyers, as well as a violation of our municipal jaws. The excuse of such dealers as have been questioned about itis that the corporation law cannot be complied with; and, as they purchase in Maryland and Pennsylvania by weight, marked on each bale, they have aright tosellin Washington by those weights. This violation of law will be taken notice of by the proper authorities, and the question will be settled by the enforcement of the penalty.
